FOOD VENDORS
continued from page 12
studied the art of cheese making
and goat herding, and apprenticed
on a dozen farms. After
buying a 23-acre farm in Dudley,
she tested the Catalonian
and Beaujolais recipes that she
learned in Europe.
She has already won four
awards from the American
Cheese Society in just two years.
Cheese expert Adam Centamore
explained, “Couët Farm’s
quality-over-quantity philosophy
really shows in their cheeses. My
favorite is Fran de Maquis, covered
in rosemary, fennel seed,
savory, and juniper berries.”
And in 2017 it was the American
Cheese Society’s first-place
winner. At this year’s competition,
white truffle flavor Adelisca
won second place and Fran de
Maquis won first place (again).
Raw, cave-aged sheep’s milk
cheese, Evelina, and the fresh
cow’s milk fluffy and tangy Adelisca,
also won Silver Medals at
the Big E Gold Medal Cheese
Competition in West Springfield.
Another local favorite is their
rich honey and lavender cheese
spread. Enjoy tasting their several
cheeses and pairing with
your favorite wines.
Community Gardens:
Growing Food and Beyond
By Cynthia Whitty
Ashland Community Gardens
(ACG) at Stone Park held a
celebration and reunion on July
29 to mark its 10th growing season.
Gardener Florence Seidell
recalled how the garden began
–with a group of about 12 residents/activists
from We Love
Ashland! decided in late 2008 to
start a community garden. Many
residents came together to build
nearly 60 raised beds on the old
tennis court. Since then, some of
the builders went on to start other
community projects, like the successful
Ashland Farmers Market.
Gardeners, current and past,
offered comments on what ACG
means to them:
• This is a story of hope, of citizens
making a positive change
in their own communities and
how it has a lasting impact to
this day.
• I find myself drawn to the
garden to renew my spirit and
to feel a sense of belonging
to a bigger and more important
place in life. Of course
tending my veggies is enough
reward on its own, but sharing
them with neighbors and family
is additional reward.
• The garden is about connection
with others and making a
difference in the world.
• It is one way that helps me
to be proud of our town. It
means a sense of caring and
community!
Stone Park gardeners grow
organic vegetables in a total of
57-4x10 garden beds, including
a double bed for growing food
for the Ashland Food Pantry.
The garden also has a certified
butterfly garden, common herb
gardens and an Asian Pear tree
with a complementary guild. For
