Letters to the Editor
Dear Sir,
The Australian Taxpayers’
Alliance (ATA) congratulates
Prime Minister
Scott Morrison on his
new role and called upon
the new administration
to prioritise cheaper
power bills for Australian
families and businesses
in their policy platform.
Exclusive Reachtel polling
commissioned by the
Australian Taxpayers’ Alliance
in four key swing
electorates earlier this
week found that over nine
in ten voters think it is important
that the government
take action on their
power bills, with half of
the respondents “not at all
confident” that the Turnbull
government’s National
Energy Guarantee would
achieve it.
Australians pay some of
the world’s highest electricity
prices despite being
blessed with vast reserves
of cheap coal, natural gas
and uranium due to irresponsible
government
policies.
Businesses are closing
down, jobs are disappearing,
and pensioners
are shivering through the
winter because they can’t
afford heating.
Lowering electricity prices
is not just good economics
– it is a moral imperative.
Our polling also shows
that over three in four voters
would support a withdrawal
from the Paris Accord
mandate on lowering
emissions if it meant lower
power bills in favour of a
voluntary model for lowering
carbon emissions.
The Australian Taxpayers’
Alliance Cheap Energy
Guarantee supports a
unique mechanism for reducing
carbon emissions
through an ‘opt out’ model
based in behavioural economics
research that will
lower Australia’s carbon
footprint without forcing
higher power bills or less
reliable and more expensive
electricity on those
who do not want it.
We urge Prime Minister
Morrison and his new
cabinet to adopt this approach
as a fairer, more
efficient way to balance
the interests of Australians
while combatting climate
change and meeting Australia’s
international obligations.
The polling also shows
declines of up to 11 percent
in the primary vote for
the Liberals compared to
the 2016 election.
The results make it clear
that the Morrison Liberal
coalition government must
focus on lowering electricity
bills if it wants to regain
lost ground and stay in
government come the next
federal election.
Dementia Awareness
Friends invitation
Dementia Australia is
calling on Australian organisations
to take the
lead and inspire their staff
to sign up as Dementia
Friends to learn how small
actions can make a big
difference to the lives of
people living with dementia,
their families and carers.
Dementia Awareness
Month is Dementia Australia’s
national awarenessraising
campaign held every
year throughout September.
This year’s theme is Small
actions Big difference.
We are challenging all
business and community
leaders to put dementia on
the agenda in workplaces,
clubs and community centres
throughout September.
Whether you have 40
club members or 40,000
employees, combined we
all can make a difference
to the more than 425,000
people living with dementia
in Australia and the almost
1.5 million people involved
in their care.
At your next team or all
staff meeting ask for a show
of hands from all those who
have been impacted by dementia.
I guarantee you will
be surprised by the numbers.
With our Dementia Friends
program we are providing
an opportunity for everyone
to empower themselves
with more knowledge and
increased understanding
about dementia so they
can learn how some small
actions can make a big difference
in the day-to-day
life of someone living with
dementia.
Wonderful volunteers at
St Mark’s Playgroup
At 10am on Wednesday
mornings, in a hall
behind St Mark’s Church
on Figtree Road, Hunters
Hill, one of Sydney’s
most charming playgroups
opens its gates.
My daughter Indiana
and I discovered the
playgroup on one of our
walks around Hunters Hill.
Indiana spotted a boxing
kangaroo outside the
Church grounds (that she
now hugs each time before
we go in).
Inside the hall, we are
greeted by the delightful
and inspiring Pamela,
Mary and Joan and their
wonderful team of volunteers,
who put so much
love, care and kindness
into this little playgroup.
What I love as a Mum
is the thought that
goes into the program
they’ve created.
* * *
THE MORNING starts
with arts and crafts that is
run by Winsome, Dellane,
Lesley and Gay which is
often inspired by the seasons
or special events
coming up; so anything
from making purple blossom
jacaranda trees to
making fireplaces in winter
to Mother’s Day cards.
There are many toys,
dress ups and activity tables
set up for everyone to
go between.
The morning then
moves onto a complimentary
morning tea for the little
ones, with cheese and
vegemite sandwiches,
freshly cut fruit and
drinks, and a lovely morning
tea for the adults
with home made baking
and sandwiches and Nespresso
coffee.
NEXT UP the playgroup
moves outside
for ‘bubbles and popcorn’
with a bubble and
popcorn machine in full
swing with toddler cars,
sandpit and the very popular
dolls house and water
activities in summer.
At 11.30am the bell
rings and we’re all ushered
back inside for singing,
accompanied by
a piano thanks to the
talented piano player
Helen and storytime, culminating
with Sleeping
Bunnies, led by Reverend
Kimberly Sawyer.
Indiana and I cannot
thank Pamela, Mary and
Joan and their wonderful
team of volunteers for the
service they provide.
On behalf of all the
Mums, Dads, Nannies
you so much. See you all
met with Nelson Parade
residents and Hunters Hill
councillors at the council
chambers last week and
while some support the
bureaucrats’ encapsulation
idea, most want the
waste removed.
Ms Clarke was at the
meeting and said most residents
support the waste
removal demands of Mayor
Mark Bennett and former
Mayor Richard Quinn
as on the front page of The
Weekly Times on June 20.
“Our residents not only
support the Mayors, we
are desperate for action
and we want something
to happen now to remove
the waste from this site,
which is owned by Property
NSW,” Ms Clark said.
Residents were given
hope the radio active
waste - which has been
on the former industrial
site for almost 100 years -
would be removed through
recent reassurances by
Lane Cove MP Anthony
Roberts and Ryde MP Victor
Dominello in The Weekly
Times.
Mr Dominello is the Minister
responsible for Property
a multi-million grant to
have the waste removed,
possibly to South Australia.
Concerning your last two
these AGW advocates have
anything to tell me that will
change my mind then what
academic authority do they
have better than two I can
name of many.
E.g. Henrick Svensmark
of Denmark and Nir Shaviv
of Israel who have written
books and papers, open to
worldwide discussion and
harsh criticism by many
AGW rent seekers who rely
on Government money for
their existence.
Which brings up the
CSIRO … a world class scientific
organisation which
sacked one of its scientists
for not following its government
funded lead.
If that is science then, can
we burn all of the present
books and say we know all
that there is to know and
that’s that?
