transportation, but many people see their
vehicles as extensions of their personalities.
The color of a vehicle can say a lot
about its driver. In fact, automotive
experts say color affects drivers’ decisions

In 2015, a survey from PPG Automotive
Coatings found the color palette
of black, silver, gray, and white makes
up 75 percent of new cars on the road.
White has been the most popular car
color for years, perhaps because neutral
tones tend to look new for years, improving
resale value as a result.
The Pantone Color Institute periodically
highlights popular trends in colors
for home decorating, graphic design,
fashion, and much more. Their experts
know a thing about what color can say about a person. Here’s
a look at how drivers may perceive themselves (and how
others view them) based on their color choices in vehicles,
courtesy of Pantone, NerdWallet, Thrillist, and Today.com.
• White: This color — perhaps thanks to the popularity of
Apple products — can often project a persona of a diligent,
hardworking person. White is a dependable color that also is
sleek and modern. Many people who prefer white also like
the purity of the color and its perceived cleanliness.
• Black: Black vehicles have stood the test of time as status
symbols. Those who purchase black cars may view them as
classic and powerful. Black also conveys elegance. That’s
why limousines and hired cars are often black.
• Silver: Silver cars may have futuristic connotations
because of their metallic hues. Silver vehicles also can be
elegant and prestigious. A certain element of modernity is
associated with silver cars and trucks.

Deer hunters have until August 29 to apply for a Vermont antlerless
deer permit for use in the December 1-9 muzzleloader hunting season.

Applications is Aug. 29
The deadline to apply for an antlerless deer permit to be
used during Vermont’s December 1-9 muzzleloader deer season
is Thursday, August 29.
Antlerless deer hunting permit applications are on Vermont
Fish & Wildlife’s website (www.vtfishandwildlife.com), and
printed applications are available from license agents statewide.
Hunters applying online for an antlerless permit will do so
through the online license sales system as if they were purchasing
a license or a tag using their conservation ID number,
or CID#. Landowners who do not have a Conservation ID
number will need to create a profile through the online license
sales system to apply for a landowner application even if they
do not intend to purchase a hunting license.
The December 1-9 muzzleloader season has 27,000 antlerless
permits distributed in 18 of Vermont’s 21 WMUs, which
is estimated to result in 3,914 antlerless deer being taken.
Landowners who post their land may not apply for a muzzleloader
landowner antlerless deer permit.
“Consecutive mild winters in 2016 and 2017 and a moderate
winter in 2018 have allowed for deer population growth
throughout the state,” said Nick Fortin, deer project leader for
Fish & Wildlife. “The number of muzzleloader season antlerless
deer permits was increased slightly this year to reduce

Vermont’s Resident Canada
Goose Season, Sept. 1-25
Vermont’s resident Canada goose hunting season will be
held September 1 through September 25 to help control
Vermont’s resident Canada goose population prior to the
arrival of Canada geese migrating south from Canada according
to the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department.
The season will be open statewide with a daily bag limit of
five Canada geese in the Connecticut River Zone and eight in
the rest of Vermont.
A second Canada goose hunting season for resident and
migrant birds will be held October 13-December 1 with a
daily bag limit of three Canada geese in the Lake Champlain
and Interior Vermont Zones.
In the Connecticut River Zone, the second Canada goose
season will be October 2-November 4, and November
21-December 16 with a daily bag limit of two Canada geese.
A hunting license is required, and a waterfowl hunter 16 or
older must carry current federal and Vermont duck stamps.
Federal stamps are sold at post offices, federal refuges and
online at www.fws.gov/birds/get-involved/duck-stamp/buyduck-stamp.php.
State duck stamps are available on Vermont
Fish & Wildlife’s website (www.vtfishandwildlife.com) and
from license agents. The hunter must sign the federal duck
stamp.
All migratory game bird hunters must also be registered
with the Harvest Information Program (H.I.P.). This can be
done on Vermont Fish & Wildlife’s website or by calling tollfree
1-877-306-7091. After providing some basic information,
you will receive your annual H.I.P. registration number, which
you then need to record on your hunting license.

be downloaded from the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department
website (www.vtfishandwildlife.com) under “Hunt” –
“Waterfowl.” A printed version also is available from license

Vermont Bear Hunting Starts in September
The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department says bear hunting
season starts in September and there are new bear hunting
regulations in effect this year.
Vermont has two bear hunting seasons. The early season,
which requires a special bear tag, starts September 1 and continues
through November 9 with one exception. Nonresident
hunters using dogs cannot start bear hunting until September
15. The late bear season begins November 10 and continues
through November 18. A hunter may only take one bear during
the year.
In addition to a hunting license, a bear hunter using a bow
or crossbow must have either a bow license or a certificate
proving completion of a bow hunter education course.
The hunter must field dress the bear before taking it to a
reporting station. It is also legal to skin the bear and cut it up
in order to carry it out of the woods. Although the bear must
be reported within 48 hours, Fish & Wildlife urges doing so
quickly to cool the meat. The hunter must also collect and
submit a pre-molar tooth from the bear within 48 hours which
provides important data on the age structure and size of the
bear population.
Upon the request of a game warden, a person harvesting a
bear is required to return to the kill site with a game warden.

Vermont Moose Hunting Permits for Veterans Are Drawn
The five winners of Vermont 2018 moose hunting permits
for resident military veterans were determined in a randomized
computer lottery drawing August 1 at the Fish & Wildlife
office in Montpelier. The five permit winners were among 100
military veteran applicants who applied at no cost by a July 6
deadline. The winners’ names are posted on Vermont Fish &
Wildlife’s website (www.vtfishandwildlife.com).
No regular public lottery was held because only thirteen
moose hunting permits were authorized this year. If any public
lottery permits had been offered, all those with bonus

as well as in forested beech and oak stands,” said Vermont’s
bear biologist Forrest Hammond. They also are likely to be
feeding on standing corn.”
Hammond says Vermont’s regulated bear hunting seasons
help in managing the state’s population which has grown in
recent years.
“Twenty-five years ago Vermont had less than 3,000 bears,
and they were found mostly in the mountains and northeastern
quarter of the state,” he said. “Although we have successfully
increased bear numbers, the human population has also risen,
resulting in more encounters between humans and bears.
Carefully regulated hunting helps control the growth of the
black bear population and allows for their sustainable use,
while decreasing interactions with humans.”
Hammond says with the bear population so high, this is a
great opportunity for hunters who have never hunted bear to
do so this year. He says properly prepared bear meat is highly
nutritious and that recipes are readily available on the
Internet. A 2018 Black Bear Hunting Season Guide is available
on the Vermont Fish & Wildlife website.
Hammond asks hunters in southern Vermont to avoid
shooting bears with yellow ear tags and GPS collars because
they are valuable animals in the Deerfield Wind bear study.
Also required by law, the remaining five permits will be auctioned
with proceeds going to Fish & Wildlife conservation
education programs.
Veteran applicants who did not receive a permit were
awarded a veteran bonus point to improve their chances in any
future moose permit lotteries.
Non-veteran applicants who have moose hunting bonus
points from previous years will have those points “frozen” so
that they may be used in future years.
The permits may be used to take bull moose during
Vermont’s October 20-25 regular moose season. Hunting will
only be allowed in Wildlife Management Units E1 and E2 in
the northeastern corner of the state where Fish & Wildlife
recommends the moose population be maintained at its current
level to reduce the effects of winter ticks.
As required by law, an auction for five moose hunting permits
is open until August 14. Sealed bids must be received by
Vermont Fish & Wildlife by 4:30 p.m. that day. Contact the
