The heritage of Northwest 

Coast tribes in Ketchikan is 

integral to our culture. Twenty 

percent of residents can trace 

their heritage to the Tlingit, 

Haida and Tsimshian tribes. The 

largest collection of totem poles 

in the world can be found here, 

and you’ll meet the artists and 

teachers who work to keep their 

culture alive. 

• Saxman Native Village and Totem 

Bight State Park display poles, clan 

houses and feature scheduled 

performances of traditional 

Native dances. 

• The Totem Heritage Center is a 

federal historic site housing ancient 

poles retrieved from abandoned 

villages. The center has instructed 

students in traditional Native design 

and arts techniques since established 

in the 1970s.

Misty Fjords 

& Tongass National Forest 

Misty Fjords is a federally designated 

National Monument 

managed by the U.S. Forest 

Service. The protected canals and 

channels were carved from glacial 

activity long ago. Located 40 

miles south of Ketchikan, its 2.3 

million acres provide outstanding 

recreational opportunities and 

wildlife habitat. Misty Fjords is 

accessible by floatplane or boat 

from Ketchikan. In the summer, 

day cruises and flightseeing trips 

are offered daily. Local kayak 

companies offer guided overnight 

trips and the USFS maintains several 

wilderness cabins within the 

monument for visitors who desire 

an extended visit. 

• Pictographs (ancient Native rock art) 

are painted along the rock cliff 

walls within the monument. 

• Famous New Eddystone Rock, a picturesque 

volcanic core, is situated 

near the entrance to the monument. 

• Allow four hours for a cruise or two 

hours for a flightseeing trip to Misty.

Ketchikan is located in the 

heart of the nation’s largest 

national forest, the 17 million 

acre Tongass. 

This temperate rainforest is an integral 

part of the resident lifestyle in 

Southeast Alaska, providing wood for 

industry, habitat for birds and animals, 

food, and the basics needed for 

the daily life of the Northwest coastal 

tribes indigenous to the area. Travel 

from Ketchikan to Yakutat, and you 

will still have not left the Tongass. 

In and around Ketchikan you will 

‘visit’ the Tongass while cruising along 

its shores, hiking local trails, flying 

into a remote lake, or camping and 

picnicking at a recreation area. As you 

plan your visit, it will be apparent

of wildlife. Around Ketchikan, 

marine life, birds and animals 

move in migratory patterns and 

follow food sources throughout 

the year. 

• Over 250 birds have been documented 

in Ketchikan. The annual Alaska 

Hummingbird Festival in April celebrates 

the return of all migratory 

birds each spring. 

• Migrating Humpback and Orca 

whales, as well as sea lions, seals and 

porpoises are frequently spotted on 

cruise excursions. 

• Black bear are most often seen while 

searching for food near salmon 

streams and in wooded areas where 

berries and other edible plants are 

available. 

• Sitka Black-Tailed deer inhabit the 

beaches and forest. Mountain goats 

and wolves are often sighted at 

higher elevations.

Ketchikan has so much to 

offer that you might not want 

to leave – just ask some of our 

residents who “came for a 

visit.” While cruise passengers 

are typically in port for six to 

eight hours, air and ferry 

travelers have more flexibility 

in planning their stays. A 3 to 

4-day visit will acquaint you 

with our island and provide 

time for sightseeing and some 

activities. You’ll want to plan 

additional time in town for 

side trips to neighboring 

islands and day tours. If 

you are planning a remote 

getaway to a fishing lodge 

or backcountry adventure, 

consider adding a few days to 

your stay to see more of what 

makes our town a great 

destination. 

Ketchikan is a popular destination 

May through September, 

and as such, requires some 

advance planning to make the 

most of your visit. Transportation 

and accommodations 

should be booked well in

available. October through 

April is a slower pace, but be 

sure to book in advance to 

assure your choice of dates. 

What to bring: 

• Casual, comfortable clothing

Ketchikan: 

• Ketchikan International 

Airport is located on 

Gravina Island and requires 

a 5-minute ride to town. 

Ferries depart the airport on 

the hour/half hour. During 

peak summer periods, 

departures are every 15 

minutes. Fares start at $5.00 

for adults, $6.00 for vehicles 

one way. 

• Airport shuttle vans and a 

water taxi service meet all 

flights, transporting passengers 

and luggage from 

baggage claim to your 

Ketchikan destination. 

• Rental cars can be arranged 

and picked up at the 

Ketchikan International 

Airport as well as in town. 

• Municipal bus service operates 

seven days a week, 

providing service on major 

streets and larger residential 

areas. Fares start at $1.50; 

buses run every 30 minutes. 

• Public parking lots have time 

restrictions and/or require a 

permit. One day permits are 

$5.00, available for purchase 

at City Hall, downtown. 

• Taxis meet airport ferry and

Day One: Visit local attractions for an 

introduction to the area’s indigenous 

peoples. The Southeast Alaska 

Discovery Center’s Native Traditions 

room, the Tongass Historical Museum, 

the Totem Heritage Center, and the 

Deer Mountain Tribal Hatchery and 

Eagle Center offer insight about our 

native residents. Take a walk through 

downtown to see examples of totem 

poles; locations are noted on the 

walking tour map available at the 

Ketchikan Visitors Bureau. 

Day Two: Take an organized or selfguided 

tour to Totem Bight State Park 

and to Saxman Native Village. Both 

parks feature clan houses and large 

collections of poles. Saxman’s carving 

shed allows visitors to watch master 

carvers and their apprentices practice 

their craft near the clan house where 

Native dance performances are held. 

Day Three: Fly or ferry to Metlakatla, 

the only Indian reservation in the 

state, and home to the Tsimshian 

tribe. Activities include Native dance 

performances, artist demonstrations, 

refreshments and a community tour. 

Natural Wonders 

Day One: Visit Misty Fjords National 

Monument, where retreating glaciers 

have carved what many refer to as a 

northern equivalent of the Grand 

Canyon. Tour by boat, plane or both. 

Day Two: On Prince of Wales Island, 

El Capitan Cave is part of a vast karst 

network discovered just over a 

decade ago. Artifacts show evidence

30,000 years old. Managed by the U.S. 

Forest Service, guided tours can be 

arranged in advance. 

Day Three: Consider a kayaking excursion 

along the shores of neighboring 

islands, or a day hike on one of Ketchikan’s 

local trails. Deer Mountain offers 

breathtaking views of Ketchikan and 

the surrounding area, while other 

trails lead to the solitude of backcountry 

lakes or through the massive 

Tongass Forest. 

Options: Glaciers can be viewed near 

Wrangell and Petersburg to the 

north; or near Hyder, Alaska, located 

on the mainland adjacent to British 

Columbia. 

Sportfishing 

Day One: Book a space on one of 

the area’s many guided charter boats. 

You’ll get a feel for the species available 

during your visit and pick up tips 

for the pros. 

Day Two through Four: Consider a 

remote fishing adventure selecting 

from one of the area’s lodges, resorts 

or chartered yachts. Many offer both 

salt and freshwater expeditions. Most 

packages provide lodging, guided 

fishing or boats for your use, meals 

and processing of your catch. 

Options: Charter a plane and guide, 

and head to one of the local lakes 

to try your luck at fishing for Dolly 

Varden, Rainbow or Cutthroat trout. 

Steelhead fishing is also available 

in Ketchikan and on Prince of 

Wales Island.

Camping is a favorite local 

pastime and there are several 

facilities for visitors to enjoy, too. 

• The Ward Lake Recreational Area 

includes three campgrounds that 

provide 47 sites. Campsites accommodate 

vehicles up to 45’ long; 

most sites handle 30’ to 36’ vehicles. 

Reservations are available. 

• Settler’s Cove Campground provides 

14 campsites situated on saltwater, 

18 miles north of town. Thirteen 

accommodate RVs; four handle 

vehicles up to 35’ long. All sites are 

on a first-come, first-served basis. 

• Clover Pass Resort offers private 

RV facilities that fill quickly during 

peak summer months. Reservations 

well in advance are strongly 

recommended. 

• Remote cabin rentals are offered by 

the U.S. Forest Service or Alaska 

State Parks in lakefront and saltwater 

locations. Cabins are furnished 

with bunks, tables, wood or oil-fired 

stoves. Transportation via floatplane 

or boat can be arranged through 

local charter companies.

West of Ketchikan lies the third 

largest island in the United 

States. Prince of Wales is home to 

3,700 residents in a dozen communities 

ranging in size from 50 

to 1500. Prince of Wales provides 

outstanding recreation opportunities

destination for sportfishing
