Undergraduate Architectural Portfolio
2018
Hello, I'm nilo
Studying architecture is probably the most
difficult five years of my life. However, I don’t think I
would have chosen another path just because I find it
easier. Each year in architecture school gets harder and
harder. My passion for design gets deeper every year.
Now, I already graduated. However, my eagerness to to
learn and create never stops. My journey to becoming
an architect only begins now.
This portfolio contains some of my works for the
past five years. Although incomplete, each project in
this portfolio is the best representation of myself as a
designer. I carefully selected these as they showcase
not just my skills and abilities, but also my vision as an
aspiring architect. I cannot tell briefly the whole story for
each project. Nevertheless, each is a glimpse of how I
managed the work assigned to me.

Undergraduate Comprehensive Design Project
Anilao Aquatic Resource Center is a project that will drive both locals and
tourists towards conservation of the marine protected areas to be able to
sustainably support both the fishing and tourism industry. As such, the
building should be able to provide facilities for research and training centers
for sustainable fishing and tourism, as well as, to educate locals and tourists
about the marine life in the waters of Mabini, and why it should be protected
and taken care of.
Research building
I was always fascinated by the wonders
hidden under the waters of the Philippines.
That is why I was inspired to do this project
for my comprehensive design project. Mabini
is considered to be the “Diving Capital” of the
Philippines. Its tourism sector is continuously
growing. However, the fishing sector is left behind.
Also, marine protected areas are being damaged
due to different tourism and fishing activities. /this
is why I felt the need to unify the three sectors
- tourism, fishing, and marine conservation -
through this project.
Fish port
The Anilao Aquatic Resource Center consists od three main
buildings - the research building, the fish port, and the tourism
center. Each building caters to each sector that benefits from the
marine resources of Mabini. All of the buildings are connected
by a bridge. The bridge ties all the three buildings together as
one facility despite the difference and contrast between each
sector.
My design inspiration for this project are coral reefs. From the
arrangement of the buildings, up to the color scheme. In my
opinion, nature is one of the biggest resources of inspiration
when designing. I realized while doing this project that you
don’t have to look far to be able to gain ideas for your design.
Villa Nouveau is a residential complex owned by five hypothetical clients. It
consists of five single-detached houses (owned by the clients), another five
houses attached to each other, which will be rented out, and a clubhouse.
The goal of this project is to be able to apply tropical design concepts and
interventions in planning the arrangement of the houses and in designing
each type of house.
As a group, we planned out the arrangement
and orientation of the houses in the given lot. We
considered different environmental factors such
as wind and sun in the process. In addition to
that, we also wanted to give the complex a sense
of community.
We also worked together in creating the floor
planes for each type of house. We made sure that
each spaces required by the client. Each house
contains a living room, dining area, kitchen, lanai,
powder rooom, three bedrooms, and a master’s
bedroom. Each space was strategically placed
in such a way that natural lighting and ventilation
will be maximized.

For the individual work, I designed the facade of each
house. Wooden louvers were used as sunshading
device. The exterior walls are mainly white to be able to
prevent heat gain. Wood and bricks are used as accent
materials.
I also designed the clubhouse which houses a
multipurpose hall, a lounge, and a swimming pool.
Exterior walls are also white to prevent heat gain. wood
is used for the louvers and railings.
Animation Council of The Philippines, Inc. (ACPI) is a non-profit organization
that promotes and creates an identity for the Philippines’ animation industry.
The project aims to provide facilities for the organization, as well as, studios
and training facilities for Filipinos who wishes to become animators. The
project will be an avenue for Filipino animators to improve on their skills
and to showcase them so that the country will create its own identity in the
animation industry.
ACPI administrative office
Filipino animators are always hired by foreign companies to
animate films, tv shows, anime, etc. Despite the country’s
global presence in the animation industry, it has yet to establish
its own identity. This inspired me to do this project because I
believe that for Filipinos to be able to leave a mark in this field,
it is necessary to establish first our own by honing their skills
and by giving them a way to showcase their work as animators.
Lobby of the main building
The project consists of three buildings. The first builing is the
ACPI administrative office. Second is the main building which
houses the different studios, training centers, gallery, library,
and shops. The third building contains a multipurpose hall and
cinemas, where the animators’ works will be shown.
The facade of each building forms a wave which represnts
movement. I think that is represents animation very well, as well
as, the country’s status in the industry.

3rd Year Design Project
This project is a redesign of the university’s College of Fine Arts. The
current buildings that the college use have some issues - insufficient rooms,
damaged facilities, and overall lack of identity, to name a few. This project
aims to solve these issues by redesigning the whole College of Fine Arts
complex.
Painting studio
As a team of two, we created a new architectural program for the
college which includes all the spaces we think were necessary
based on the college’s programs and through interviews we
conducted. We also worked together to divide these spaces
into buildings and arranged them strategically on the lot to
provide efficient road layouts and parking spaces.
21
Workshop
For the individuals, I was assigned to design three buildings -
the painting studio, the museum, and the workshop. In general,
I wanted the buildings to represent the college. The college
consists of creative people who are never afraid to express
themselves through their art. That is why I decided to give each
building unusual forms and patterns and a color that stands
out. This does not just give the college their needed spaces, but
also an identity that will make them be known and appreciated
in the university.
