Presidents Address 2017/18
The clubs season started early with the successful delivery of the 2017 Australian IRB Championships at our own Kingscliff Beach from the 13-
16 July. The event provided us with another opportunity to showcase our region and we look forward to delivering the event again in 2019. I
thank all of you who took time off the assist with the delivery of that event which clearly demonstrated that this club has the capacity to successfully
deliver major events.
The start of the 2017/18 patrolling season kicked off with the raising of the flags
ceremony, which acknowledged the club’s efforts in being named the branch
“Club of the Year”. This award was reward for all the hard work and dedication
of our members over the past season in striving to make a difference through
their contribution and engagement with our local community.
I acknowledge the contribution of all the outgoing members who volunteered
their time to take up a position on the Board or any of our subcommittees
and take this opportunity to personally thank them on behalf of
the members.
We extend our appreciation to the local community and our sponsors who have
steadfastly supported the Club’s volunteer membership base, enabling us to
continually improve our facilities and range of lifesaving services.
A big thank you also to Mick O’Brien who organised the commissioning of three magnificent timber statues through Sunshine Coast artist
Matty George which now stand guard over our beach in tribute to the memory of passed local residents who have served Cudgen Headland
SLSC. The statues were erected with the assistance of South East Excavations and will now watch over our beach Nth East and Sth for many
years to come.
Club Management
This season we welcomed some new faces into some of the Standing Committee positions and with their appointment came a renewed
enthusiasm, which has continued to see us grow as a club and maintain our reputation as one of the best clubs in Austra lia.
I would like to make mention of the huge amount of work that Lyndel Small does behind the scenes to keep the club compliant which has
resulted in the club achieving SLSNSW Silver Quality Club status. Our challenge is to maintain the level of service to keep our Silver status and
work towards achieving Gold.
My personal thanks to Emma and the staff for the effort that they have put into making the club a pleasant place to visit and the level of service
that they continue to deliver to our members .
Surf Lifesaving
Thank you to our Surf Lifesaving Director Mike Crawley, Patrol Manager Jenny Curnow, our Patrol Captains and our patrolling members who
have contributed their time to assist throughout the season. We saw a large number of people this season contribute an enormous
amount of hrs to maintain our patrol requirements with Jenny Curnow leading the way on 71.5hrs. Special thank you to those members that
volunteered to help Fingal again this season. Your dedication in keeping our beaches safe, as the demand for our services increases each year
is to be commended.
Our training teams, led by Sue Eke, put in another fantastic effort delivering a wide range of surf lifesaving courses throughout the year and
supporting the delivery of a number of branch courses.
Many thanks go to Chris van der Waal and our IRB team for their efforts in maintaining the compliance of our IRB’s this season.
The ALBERT program, which has been driven by Mike Crawley since its inception,
was rolled out to a number of branches across the state and we have received interest
for the delivery of similar programs in other branches across the state and at
some interstate venues. SLSNSW have seen the merits of the program and have
offered to embrace the program as a statewide initiative.
The lifesaving movement is about to see a shift in the level of services that we offer
such as swift water rescue and active drone units and we may see some of those
initiatives roll out in preparation for next summer.
