How it works<br />
Estrogens diffuse into their target cells and interact with a protein receptor. Target cells include the female<br />
reproducve tract, the mammary gland, the hypothalamus, and the pituitary. Estrogens increase the hepac<br />
synthesis of s** hormone binding globulin (SHBG), thyroid-binding globulin (TBG), and other serum proteins and<br />
suppress follicle-smulang hormone (FSH) from the anterior pituitary. Drospirenone is progesterone, and<br />
together with estradiol, it can provide contracepon by suppressing release of ovum (eggs) from your ovary, and<br />
interfering with other mechanisms that support occurrence of pregnancy. It suppresses the natural progesterone<br />
in the body, and thereby helps in PMDD and acne. Its mechanism of acon in prevenon of osteoporosis is not<br />
known.<br />
What is Ethinyl estradiol and Drospirenone<br />
Ethinyl estradiol and Drospirenone also sold under the brand name Yaz is a birth control pill. It works by<br />
prevenng ovulaon or the release of a female egg from the ovaries. It also causes changes in the cervical and<br />
uterine lining making the cervical mucus more viscous thereby making it harder for male sperms to reach the<br />
uterus and also for a ferlized egg to aach to the uterus wall. This pill is used as a contracepve method to<br />
prevent pregnancy. It is also used in treang moderate acne in women who are above 14 years of age and have<br />
started geng their periods, and who also wish to use contracepon to avoid pregnancy. Ethinyl<br />
estradiol/Drospirenone is also used for alleviang the symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD),<br />
such as depression, anxiety, irritability, concentraon troubles, lethargy, changes in sleep paerns or appete,<br />
muscle or joint pain, tender breasts, and weight gain. This pill may also be given for treatments beside those listed<br />
above.<br />
Important Information about Ethinyl estradiol and Drospirenone<br />
Ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone is not re<strong>com</strong>mended if you are pregnant or if you have recently delivered a<br />
baby. You must also not take this pill if you are suffering from any of these condions: heart disease, out of control<br />
high blood pressure, blood clong disorder, problems with circulaon, problems in eyes or kidneys due to<br />
diabetes, unexplained vaginal bleeding, liver disease or liver cancer, migraine, if you are smoker and above 35,<br />
breast or uterine cancer, jaundice due to birth control pills, or a heart aack or a stroke in the recent past. You<br />

Before taking this pill, let your doctor know about all your medical history and if you are allergic to any<br />
medicaons or any ingredients in ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone. You must not take this medicaon if you<br />

with the fist pill on the first day of your period or on the first Sunday aer that. You may need an alternate birth<br />
control measure for the inial days of using these pills. You may use condoms or spermicide as back up<br />
contracepon. You may need frequent doctor visits while taking these pills. Take one pill every day orally and<br />
ensure that you don’t go more than 24 hours without a pill. Make a habit to take the pill at the same me every<br />
day. When the pills get over, start a new pack. Get a refill before the previous pack gets over as missing on a single<br />
dose can result in pregnancy. You may get breakthrough bleeding during the first 3 months of starng this<br />
medicaon. See your doctor if it is persistent and turns heavy. Stop taking the pills if you experience severe<br />
voming and diarrhea and employ back up birth control method. If you are scheduled for a surgery or any medical<br />
test or advised bed rest, you may need to disconnue this pill for some me. Any healthcare provider who treats<br />

What if I miss a dose?<br />
Missing even a single pill increases the risk of your pregnancy. So don’t skip a dose as far as possible. If you<br />

have one pill each day for the rest of the pack. If you happen to skip two acve pills consecuvely in the first and<br />
second week, have two pills each day for two consecuve days. Then have one pill each day for the rest of the<br />
pack. Adopt back up contracepon for at least one full week following the missed doses. If you happen to skip two<br />
acve pills consecuvely in the third week, discard the rest of the pills and start a new pack the same day if you<br />
are a Day 1 starter. If you start on Sunday, connue taking a pill every day unl Sunday. On Sunday, discard rest of<br />
the pack and open a new pack that day. If you happen to skip three acve pills consecuvely in week 1, 2, or 3,<br />
discard the rest of the pack and open a new pack on the same day if you are a Day 1 starter. If you start on Sunday,<br />
connue taking a pill every day unl Sunday. On Sunday, discard away rest of the pack and start a new pack that<br />

potassium levels like aliskiren, ACE inhibitors like enalapril/lisinopril, angiotensin receptor blockers like<br />
losartan/valsartan, heparin, NSAIDs such as ibuprofen/naproxen, potassium-sparing “water pills”/diurecs like<br />
eplerenone/spironolactone/triamterene). Your doctor will know about the interacons and prescribe accordingly.<br />
