ED 550C,ED 550D Counseling Practicum for Social Agency/Church Setting 3<br />
The practicum is done after the conclusion of all coursework. It involves a minimum of<br />
360 hours (plus 40 observation hours) in a setting approved in advance by the coordinator<br />
of graduate advising. A variety of social agency sites is available for this competencybased<br />
experience. An on-site supervisor and <strong>Whitworth</strong> College supervisor work with the<br />
student for the duration of the practicum, seeing that appropriate skills are demonstrated.<br />
Requires GSE advance approval. Regular seminar sessions with instructor, TBA. Grade is<br />
Satisfactory/Not Satisfactory. Prerequisite: Fingerprint check. Fall, January, spring and<br />
summer terms.<br />
ED 550A,ED 550B Counseling Practicum for Initial ESA, P-12 School<br />
Counselor Certification 3<br />
This is the culminating experience in the program for a master’s degree and certification in<br />
guidance and counseling. It is a competency-based program in a school setting with signoffs<br />
as skills are evidenced. On-site and college supervision. Requires advance Counselor<br />
Professional Education Advisory Board (PEAB) screening and approval as well as school<br />
district advance approval. Grade is Satisfactory/Not Satisfactory.. Prerequisite: Fingerprint<br />
check. Fall and spring semester. NOTE: This practicum is currently being revised.<br />
ED 551 Core: Milestones in Education 3<br />
A survey of the history of Western education, with particular attention to the linkages<br />
between education and Christianity and with the liberal arts tradition. Current philosophical<br />
issues confronting education are reviewed against their historical and intellectual<br />
backgrounds. Fall and spring semester.<br />
ED 558 Consultation Seminar 1<br />
Consulting is a process by which administrators, teachers, parents, pupils, personnel<br />
specialists and other significant adults in the life of a client communicate about him/her.<br />
A humanistic approach to pupil services necessitates that we use our resources more<br />
effectively. Indirect services whereby the specialist works as a consultant with the consulter<br />
will be the focus of this course. Requires GSE approval (to be taken simultaneously<br />
with school practicum and is required for initial ESA certification). Fall semester.<br />
ED 560 Public School Finance 2<br />
In this course, students examine the financial dimensions of public school administration.<br />
Issues examined include budget development and management; the role of state,<br />
local and federal agencies in school finance issues; collective bargaining; personnel;<br />
accountability; the special levy system; accounting procedures; purchasing; and risk management.<br />
Summer term.<br />
ED 561 Tests and Measurements 3<br />
Analyze individual and group tests and their application to pupil progress. Time will be<br />
given to problems encountered in constructing tests for the classroom. Math Review, if<br />
required, must be completed before taking this class. Limit: 30. Fall and summer terms.<br />
ED 562H Working with Conduct-Disordered Children 2<br />
This course covers learning how to recognize, understand and treat children with conduct<br />
disorders. A practical systems approach methodology is presented. Methods of self-care to<br />
help the professional deal with the frustrations inspired by these children is also covered.<br />
For teachers, counselors, administrators and interested others. Spring semester.<br />
ED 563D Working with Sexually Abused Children and Families 2<br />
Specific areas covered include counseling victims of child abuse; art therapy techniques<br />
utilized for abuse victims; play therapy for children suffering from depression, anxiety and<br />
somatic complaints, and teaching children relaxation exercises; counseling techniques<br />
related to working with dysfunctional families; detecting child abuse and following through<br />
with appropriate interventions; detecting childhood depression, and counseling with depressed<br />
children and their families. This course meets the state WAC 180-79-115 abuse<br />
requirement. Summer and fall terms.<br />
