Pre-Engineering<br />

Engineering is normally a five-year program. Therefore, students may take three years at<br />

<strong>Whitworth</strong> followed by two years at an engineering school, or two years at <strong>Whitworth</strong><br />

followed by three years at an engineering school. Students completing their engineering<br />

bachelor’s degree elsewhere after three years at <strong>Whitworth</strong> may receive a <strong>Whitworth</strong> B.A.<br />

degree in addition to their engineering degree. Three-two arrangements with Washington<br />

<strong>University</strong> (St. Louis), the <strong>University</strong> of Southern California, Columbia <strong>University</strong>, and<br />

Seattle Pacific <strong>University</strong> (Electrical Engineering) are in effect. Such a program gives a<br />

student with educational goals in the engineering area the opportunity to pursue the first<br />

three years in a supportive atmosphere of small classes and close faculty contacts. The<br />

following courses are recommended to meet the needs of many engineering schools. For<br />

certain branches of engineering, other <strong>Whitworth</strong> offerings (i.e. Organic Chemistry for<br />

Chemical Engineering, Statics for Mechanical and Civil Engineering) may be appropriate.<br />

Concerns of the engineering profession: its scope, challenges, opportunities, rewards<br />

and educational requirements. Also included are guest lectures by professional engineers<br />

and tours of area engineering facilities. Fall semester.<br />

EN 211 Statics 3<br />

Mathematical review, equilibrium of a particle, free-body diagrams, equilibrium of a rigid<br />

body, structural analysis, friction, center of gravity, moments of inertia. Prerequisites: PS<br />

151 and MA 110; also MA 111 or concurrent enrollment. Fall semester, even years.<br />

GL 131 Understanding Earth 4<br />

Earth’s crust as the scene of a battle between leveling forces (erosion, landslides) and<br />

forces causing irregularities (volcanoes, mountain-building). Lab work with minerals, rocks,<br />

and maps. Fall semester, even years.<br />

GL 139 Environmental Geology 4<br />

Interactions of the human species with land, sea and air. Geologic hazards, earth resources,<br />

oceanography, meteorology. Includes laboratory. Fall semester, odd years.<br />
