It’s Magic
Aquilegia hybrida ‘Spring Magic ® Yellow’
● Early spring flowering perennial
Broadens sales window
● Low energy inputs
Economical, efficient production
● Multitude of showy, early flowers
Great impulse purchase at retail
The Glorious Seven
Aptly named, the Aquilegia ‘Spring Magic’ ® series brings an
ethereal grace and beauty to the garden. While it may look
dainty and delicate, don’t let it’s appearance fool you. ‘Spring
Magic’ ® stands up under the most volatile of spring weather
with its brightly spurred flowers shining. Reaching heights of
14" (36 cm), the ‘Spring Magic’ ® series offers growers a
naturally compact, well branched habit that reduces PGR
costs. At retail, the ‘Spring Magic’ ® series commands a
higher price because of its dense, free flowering habit.
‘Spring Magic’ ® is best suited for 4" (10 cm) production as a
single plant, or 2-3 plants per 6" (15 cm) pot. This uniform
series is easily programmable for spring forcing.
Technical Information
Life cycle: Perennial
Garden height: 14" (36 cm)
USDA Hardiness Zones: 3-8
AHS Heat Zones: 9-3
‘Rose & Ivory’
Uses: Perennial beds and borders, spring bedding,
seasonal mixed containers
Natural flower time: April-May
Flowering response: Day neutral
‘Blue & White’
Germination: 14-21 days at 72-77 °F (22-25 °C), in
media with EC levels below 0.5 and a pH of 5.8-6.2.
Maintain uniformly moist soils and humidity levels above
95 %. Lights aid in germination.
Plug culture: During Stage II, maintain temperatures of
72 °F (22 °C). Soil moisture should be consistently moist
but not saturated. Begin fertilizing at 50-75 ppm N
weekly using a well balanced formula. Supplemental HID
lighting inhibits excessive seedling stretch. During Stages
III and IV, gradually lower temperatures to 65-68 °F
(18-19 °C) and begin fertilization at 100 ppm N weekly.
Maintain EC levels at or below 1.0. Continued HID lighting
increases basal branching.
Growing on: Transplant into a well drained media with a
pH of 5.5 to 6.2. Two weeks after transplant begin
feeding at 150 to 200 ppm nitrate N in well balanced
fertilizer mix. Keep EC levels below 1.0. Flowers initiate
when mature plants are grown below 50 °F (10 °C) or
plugs are treated with temperatures below 40 °F (5 °C).
Plant growth is optimum between 60-68 °F (15-18 °C).
Temperatures below 55 °F (13 °C) slow plant
development, extend bloom time and intensify
flower color.
Crop time: Non-vernalized plugs: 7-10 weeks; Green
pots: 5-8 weeks from vernalized plugs; Flowering pots:
5-10 weeks from vernalized plugs or 22-26 weeks from
seed in pots. Plants can be forced into flower in
4-6 weeks at 60-68 °F (15-18 °C).
Culture hints: High intensity supplemental lighting will
speed the forcing process. Ship when plants are
beginning to show buds. Open flowers are sensitive to
ethylene which causes flowers to drop.
Technical Information
Life cycle: Annual
Garden height: 6-8" (15-20 cm)
Uses: Packs, pots, containers and the landscape
Germination: Begonias require light to germinate. Do
not cover seed or pellets. Germination occurs in 5-10
days at 75-80 °F (24-26 °C) with a relative humidity of
95 % or higher. For pelleted seed, slightly higher
temperatures and 100 % relative humidity aid in
uniformity of germination. Germination media with
a pH of 5.5-6.5 is optimum.
Plug culture: During Stage II, (10-14 days),
gradually lower temperatures to 70-72 °F (21-22 °C).
Maintain uniform soil moisture. Do not allow young
seedlings to dry out. Begin fertilization at 50-100 ppm
nitrate nitrogen. During Stages III and IV, continue to
gradually lower temperatures to 65-70 °F (18-21 °C),
and feed at 100 ppm nitrate nitrogen on a weekly
basis. During these stages, supplemental day
extension lighting will decrease crop time and
improve plug quality.
Growing on: Transplant after 5-7 weeks into packs
or pots and grow on at 62-68 °F (16-20 °C). Fertilize
with 150 ppm nitrogen, watching to avoid
excessive salt buildups.
Crop time: Plug crop: 5-7 weeks; Packs North:
11-13 weeks; Packs South: 10-12 weeks; 4" (10 cm)
Pots North: 12-15 weeks; 4" (10 cm)
Pots South: 11-14 weeks
Culture hints: Monitor for fungus gnats and shore
flies in the moist plug trays and treat appropriately.
During cool dark periods, watch for signs of Botrytis
and Phytophthora. If temperatures rise, treatments of
B-Nine or Cycocel are effective growth regulators.
Technical Information
Romance in the garden
Life cycle: Annual
Seed form: Plug Tested pelleted and raw seed
Seed count: 1,134,000-1,700,00 s/oz
(40,000-60,000 s/g)
Germination: Sow seed on a fine media with good
water holding capacity and drainage. Consistent
moisture levels are important for uniform germination.
Humidity levels above 95 % and a media pH between
5.5 and 6.5 are important. Germination will occur in
7-14 days at 70-74 °F (21-23 °C). Do not cover seed
as light is required to germinate. Supplemental
24-hour assimilation light provided at this stage will
increase germination, reduce crop time and improve
plug quality.
Plug culture: During Stage II, gradually lower
temperature to 70-75 °F (21-24 °C). Maintain Stage I
moisture and humidity levels. Begin fertilizing at
50-75 ppm nitrogen in a well balanced mix containing
calcium nitrate. Do not saturate soils or disturb seed
when fertilizing. Continue assimilation lighting during
Stage II: (28-42 days). Lower temperatures to 68-70
°F (20-21 °C) for Stages III and IV. Gradually lower
humidity levels but maintain soil moisture levels, avoid
saturated or dry media. Increase fertilizer levels to
75-100 ppm nitrogen with the same formulation as
Stage II. Stage IV levels may be increased to 100-150
ppm nitrogen. Begonias are sensitive to high soil EC
levels. Maintain low soil soluble salt levels. Continue
assimilation lighting or use at least 50 ft.c. (550 lux)
light to extend days or use night interruption. Total day
length of greater than 14 hours is necessary to avoid
tuber formation or delaying the crop. Applications of
Cycocel at 150-250 ppm can be used to control
growth. Plugs will be ready to transplant in 10-14
weeks from sowing depending on plug size.
Growing on: Transplant plugs into finished containers
with a well drained media, and pH of 5.5 to 6.5.
Maintain day length in excess of 14 hours. Continued
supplemental lighting will improve plant quality and
shorten crop time. Growing temperatures between
68-72 °F (18-22 °C) optimize growth and flowering.
Fertilize at 150-250 ppm nitrogen in a well-balanced
formula. Avoid ammonia; increased calcium levels will
improve plant quality. Avoid high soluble salts in the
soil.
Crop time: Plug time: 8-10 weeks; Flowering 4”
(10 cm) pots: 16-18 weeks; Baskets: 20-26 weeks
Culture hints: Watering under bright afternoon sun
can cause leaf burn. Short days or temperatures
below 62 °F (16 °C) will result in tuber formation
and delayed flowering.
moisture levels. Keep plugs actively growing to
prevent premature flower initiation. Do not hold
plugs past maturity.
Growing on: Grow on at 60-65 °F (16-18 °C). Low
temperatures can cause premature flowering and
poor garden performance. Fertilize weekly at
150-200 ppm nitrogen in a well-balanced fertilizer.
Crop time: Plugs: 4-6 weeks; Packs: 9-10 weeks,
Giant Wine’ has deep burgundy flower petals that resemble
the color of a rich merlot wine. Characterized by long, thick
stems and a well branched habit, the ‘Benary’s Giant’
Zinnias have large, 4-5" (10-13 cm) fully double flowers.
Their high yields, strong stems, fully double flowers and
long vase life have endeared them to cut flower growers
throughout North America. At 40-50" (100-120 cm) in the
garden, ‘Benary’s Giant’ Zinnias add height and color to full
sun settings. Pair with ‘Benary’s Giant White’ in the vase for
a stunning cut flower presentation.
Technical Information
Life cycle: Annual
Garden height: 40-50" (100-120 cm)
Uses: cut flower, mixed containers
Germination: 7-10 days at 68-72 °F (20-22 °C).
Higher temperatures can reduce germination and
cause weak seedlings. Sow seeds in a well-drained
media low in nutrients with a pH between 5.8-6.2.
Cover seed lightly with vermiculite.
Plug culture: During Stage II, reduce temperatures to
68-70 °F (20-21 °C). Keep soil moisture levels low and
do not fertilize. During Stage III (10-14 days), reduce
temperatures to 65-68 °F (18-20 °C). Keep soils
moderately dry and begin weekly fertilization at
100-150 ppm calcium nitrate in a well-balanced mix
to improve seedling quality. During Stage IV, lower
temperatures to 62-65 °F (16-18 °C). Maintain Stage
III fertilizer levels and good air movement. Plant
quality is adversely affected if plugs are held too long
prior to transplant.
Growing on: Grow on at 62-65 °F (16-18 °C) for
3-4 weeks. Temperatures below 62 °F (16 °C) delay
flowering. Provide good ventilation. Fertilize weekly at
200 ppm nitrogen in a well-balanced mix. The use of
calcium nitrate will improve stem strength. For cut
flower production, thin seedlings or plant plugs at
8-10" (20-25 cm) in rows or 9-12" x 12”
(23-30 cm x 30 cm) spacing in beds.
Cultural hints: Flowers initiate faster under short
days. Flower quality improves as light levels,
temperature, and day length increase. Insufficient
boron levels can cause flower bud abortion and
reduced branching. Excess boron delays
flowering.
Crop time: Plugs: 2-3 weeks;
cutflower production: 9-10 weeks
