Know All About Caterpillar G3306
Caterpillar G3306 is a fuel-flexible engine that is considered to be one of the most robust and
reliable designs Caterpillar has ever produced. A favorite of old-time truckers, the CAT 3306
engine remains one of the most sought-after engines in the trucking world until today. This 10.5-
liter, inline, six-cylinder natural gas or diesel engine was first manufactured early in the 1970s.
The Caterpillar G3306 was produced to replace older 3160 and 1673 models. The engine first
caught the public’s attention after being widely used in Caterpillar’s 225 Excavator. This heavyduty
machine was manufactured from 1973 all the way to the late 1990s, which was when
emissions technology was revolutionized. The 3306 was then replaced by the C7 and C9 engines
in 2004, as Tier III and IV emissions requirements started becoming standard.
Nevertheless, the Caterpillar G3306 remain to be a sought-after engine because of its
uncomplicated design and reliability. Earlier versions of this engine were designed to include precombustion
chambers, which were later on replaced with more modern direct injection systems.
Older versions also had sleeve metering fuel systems, which later on, were switched to more
reliable and efficient left-hand scroll system.
Although the Caterpillar G3306 isn’t built for speed, it is definitely an unbeatable workhorse,
boasting some 563 to 967 ft/lbs. of torque. Higher and more modern models such as the CAT
G3306s, which comes with turbo and injector upgrades offer even greater torque power at 1000
ft/lbs. Later models of the famed engine have average horsepower ratings between 218 and 360
hp, for models with injector and turbo performance upgrades.
For more than 25 years, the Caterpillar G3306 remained a sought-after workhorse in Caterpillar’s
prestigious lineup of heavy-duty diesel engines. In fact, the CAT 3306 was also some of the most
mass produced in history, seen in all kinds of heavy duty and workhorse applications ranging from
D6 and D7 Dozers to different Motorgrader models, as well as other widely used equipment like
rollers, excavators, scrapers, cement mixers, dump trucks, generator sets, industrial pumps,
front-end loaders, and many other heavy-duty machineries.
