Clubs and Activities
Surbiton Sunrise is a relaxed gathering over croissants and tea/coffee/OJ, reviewing quality daily newspapers and discussing
the key current economic, business and political events of the week. No tests/questions – just chat.
We occasionally back our views on the likelihood of future events by buying shares we think will rise in value given our
evaluation of contemporary events, using the skills learned in our courses thus far. (No monetary contribution is required!)
While there is no guarantee of success, the last two years’ trading profits have paid for charitable donations and Y13 leaving
drinks for the departments concerned.
One of the main goals is to establish a good working knowledge of current affairs to enhance GCE A-level answers. The
Economics/Business team’s experience is that the girls with good contemporary current affairs knowledge have an edge at
A-level and competitive university interviews.
This excellent coding environment will progress the pupils quickly
and those who see it through will be closer to competency required for
App development using xCode further down the line. This is really an
introduction to this fun language and can be backed up by private study
The Duke of Edinburgh’s
Award Scheme
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a popular and
flourishing co-curricular option. We offer all three levels
(Bronze, Silver and Gold). The pupils take part in practice
expeditions on the North Downs for Bronze and Silver,
with Exmoor for Gold. The qualifying expeditions are
in the South Downs for Bronze and Silver and Dartmoor
for Gold. As well as the expeditions, pupils learn to take
responsibility for many areas and find new
interests while pursuing their goal. We offer
voluntary activities such as Friendship
Hour, sports coaching and a whole
range of physical and skill options. A
thoroughly rewarding opportunity
for any individual.
Reading for pleasure has extensive
proven benefits: it promotes
cognitive development, increases
empathy and social skills, is
correlated with better health, leads
reduces stress. Who wouldn’t want
that for you?
BBC School
Report 2019
Each year the School runs the brilliant nationwide BBC School Report project
from December to March, in which nearly 800 schools, around 25,000 pupils all
around the UK, participate.
It is an amazing opportunity in which pupils learn a whole new set of skills to
make the news: film making, research, editing, script writing, logistics, presenting.
Pupils work in teams to produce a real video news report package under guided
tutelage from BBC professionals.
BBC School Report will run as an after school club for 10 school weeks, from
December to March, culminating in BBC NEWS DAY when pupils will be off
This is a fun club for people who love to write outside
of the classroom. It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner
storyteller, a tentative poet or an expert scriptwriter,
everyone is welcome.
We like to be inspired and to write something every week,
and to share our work together so that we can gain feedback
and improve as writers.
And, if you are interested, we can even submit your writing
into competitions.
Or we can just quietly scribble down stories to make the
heart sing and the imagination soar.
Friendly, fun and no pressure.
Key Stage
3 Debating
Key Stage 3 Debating will offer pupils
in Years 7-9 the opportunity to meet
with their peers and debate current
affairs, as well as issues they feel
passionate about. This club provides
the opportunity for pupils passionate
about debating, as well as those keen
to challenge their way of thinking,
to develop their confidence, public
speaking and debating skills.
Clubs and Activities
Student Laureates
A Student Laureateship is a privileged position among the best
writers in the School. Each embarks on a one year programme
of creative writing mentorship under the tutelage of our
Writer in Residence. Each writer works independently but
also as part of a close-knit group which inspires, encourages
and shares together.
Some writing may even be collaborative.
Our Student Laureates write on events of personal, school
and national importance – you can read (and hear) their work
from September.
The School’s Laureates will focus on creative exploration,
writing craft and editing skills. Academic excellence is never
a prerequisite - passionate, creative enthusiasm for writing
is the only requirement. The best applications to the post
were illuminated with innovation, and the winning pool of
brilliant talent keenly shone with fine features, daring short
stories, television scripts, and knife-edge poetry.
The quality is gleefully evident; the potential shortstops the
breath.
“Is this the right room for an argument?”
Room 611 is - every Thursday lunchtime,
when the Sixth Form Debating Society
meets. We debate a huge range of
issues - political, legal, social and
ethical. Students are encouraged to
develop their public speaking skills, to
present with confidence, to articulate
their views persuasively and to see
both sides of every argument. We also
practise formal “Mace” style debating in
preparation for our annual participation
in the National Schools Debating
Competition. Debating is a valuable life
skill, providing the building blocks for
impressive delivery in interviews and
assessments, and helping to develop
leadership qualities. So come along and
have your voice heard.
Do we really have the freedom to make our own choices?
Is the table still there if no one is looking at it?
If you are interested in philosophical discussion, come to the Philosophy
for Non-Philosophers club, where you can expand your thinking, develop
better reasoning skills, and explore ideas you have never come across before.
This club might be of particular interest for students who are applying for
philosophy-related degrees but do not currently study Philosophy.
This group is aimed at students in the Sixth Form who are: considering Politics or International Relations as a degree;
studying A-level Politics; or just interested in these areas. It is very topical, looking at current events and exploring them
in more depth. Students get the opportunity to take the lead on an area that interests them, as well as learn more about the
politics of a wide range of countries around the world.
Topics covered last year included (but were not limited to): Aung San Suu Kyi and the Myanmar/Rohingya crisis; the issues
surrounding Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe’s imprisonment in Iran, and Boris Johnson’s handling of the situation; the tensions
between North and South Korea, and Donald Trump’s tweets on the issue; and Middle Eastern Politics.
If any of these topics appeal to you,
this club presents a great opportunity
CREST
Awards
CREST Awards gives you the chance to
participate in hands-on science through
investigations and enquiry-based projects. You
will solve real-life STEM challenges through
practical investigation and discussion.
The CREST Awards scheme is the British
Science Association’s flagship programme
for young people and is the only nationally
recognised accreditation scheme for STEM
project work (science, technology, engineering
and mathematics) subjects, providing science
enrichment activities to inspire and engage 5
to 19-year-olds.
CREST Discovery (Years 7-8) is a great first
introduction to project work. You will work
collaboratively on a project or challenge in
self-managed groups, record and reflect on
your work using a CREST Discovery passport,
and communicate your findings through a
group presentation.
CREST Bronze (Year 9) provides a real-life
experience of ‘being’ a scientist and working
on a STEM project using your own ideas,
taking decisions about how to progress
through it, writing about your findings and
evaluating your project.
CREST Silver (Years 10-11) allows you to
develop and lead your own project. You will
need to consider the broader impact of your
project and demonstrate an innovative approach.
You will write a report to present to an external
CREST assessor. A CREST Award can count
towards the Skills section of your DofE Award.
CREST Gold (Year 12) allows you to conduct
real research, contributing something new
to a particular field of study. They are longerterm
projects that require around 70 hours’
work. At Gold level, your work will contribute
something new to the scientific or technological
community or to a particular field of study. If
your EPQ is STEM related, you can enter it for
CREST Gold and your CREST Award can count
towards the Skills section of your DofE Award.
Devising a piece of theatre can be a stimulating and exciting journey towards
the development of a performance which is a fusion of the unique talents and
creativity of a group of people. It is not a direct journey, but one in which you
will encounter well-trodden paths, blind alleys and sudden surprises. In order
to prepare, the group needs to have a good grasp of improvisatory skills.
You will explore different practical drama techniques which will help you to
create your own individual drama. These techniques will not only be exciting
and fun but will also stretch your imagination to places unknown!
Scholars this year will explore the magic of puppetry
and object manipulation, as well as storytelling and
ensemble performance.
Looking at the fundamentals of puppetry; including
focus, fixed point and breath, Scholars will learn how to
bring anything to life and learn the skills to effectively
show this hugely current art form.
Following on, this will be combined with voice and
craft to create beautiful moments of theatre.
The Senior Drama Company offers the opportunity to push for
high level of performance whilst offering the chance to work as a
professional theatre company. As well as acting, pupils have the
opportunity to learn the skills of a stage manager, sound designer,
lighting designer or marketing manager on the Senior Drama
Company play.
Last year, the Drama Company produced an interactive and
immersive performance of Lorca’s ‘Blood Wedding’, performed in
St Mark’s Church, which allowed the audience to explore the space
and be part of a very special experience. The production was then
revived for Kingston’s International Youth Arts Festival in July, a
festival of performance involving companies from all over the world.
Year 7 Production
The Year 7 Production is always
enormously popular amongst our
budding young actors. Auditions take
place in December for this exciting
opportunity. Rehearsals take place
after school, so you must be prepared
to commit to the rehearsal schedule
when it is published.
Drama and Dance
The performance is always very well
attended by parents, friends and pupils
from our feeder primary schools. Recent
productions include ‘Arabian Nights’,
performed in a beautiful Bedouin Tent,
’Swallows and Amazons’, performed
on Ravens Ait Island in the middle
of the Thames, ‘Revolting Roald’s
Splendiferous Stories’, performed in
a marquee and ‘Grimm Tales’, which
was performed in a big-top circus tent
in a clearing within Hinchley Wood.
This production promises to be the
‘feel-good’ event of the year!
They will work in teams of 10 to try
and address a business challenge. The
last 2 years we’ve partnered with the
large financial services company BDO
and hosted the course at their offices.
Students have the opportunity to meet
graduates, school leavers, managers
and directors. At the end of the course,
they present their findings to a board of
opportunity of establishing a business, selling to the public
employers for developing creativity, teamwork, leadership
and commercial awareness. There are many opportunities
to raise funds and to promote and sell products, both
within school and to the wider public. We normally run
two companies each year and the businesses are judged
against other schools in the highly competitive Kingston and
House Co-curricular System
The House System in the Senior
School is an integral part of the
palpable community spirit that
epitomises much of what we
encourage and aspire to do as a school.
It forms the backbone of numerous
charity and social enterprise events
that allow our pupils to flourish in a
range of leadership and management
endeavours.
In the Senior School, each House has
been named after a female pioneer
who, by their actions, has changed
the lives of others and made a
difference to the world. The names
of the Houses are Austen, Curie,
Fonteyn, Nightingale, Pankhurst
and Teresa. Four Year 12 students
who are known as the ‘House
Leaders’ lead each House. There are
annual elections in the first week of
September for the House Leaders in
the Sixth Form, and these girls lead
pupils in their House and organise
all House activities.
All teaching and educational support
staff have a House affiliation, with
one staff member who plays a key
leadership role, which is the ‘Head
of House’. Special thanks to both
Mr Etienne and Miss MacLean
for all their incredible work
with Pankhurst and Austen Houses
respectively; you will both be missed.
From September 2018, these are Miss
Plumley (Austen), Miss Rickards
(Curie), Mrs Moore & Miss Reeves
(Fonteyn), Mr Skinner (Nightingale),
Miss Rodríguez (Pankhurst) and Miss
Cheetham (Teresa).
The Heads of House work closely
with their Year 12 House Leaders and
Deputy Leaders to help plan, organise
and support all House events as well
as instil a reflective and independent
outlook. Each House supports a local
charity that is chosen through a series of
hustings and votes by the whole House
annually. Each House charity question
gives a dedicated focus for the House
activities and fundraising events.
The first House activity of the academic
year is the House Choral, which
takes place in September. Every girl
across Years 7, 8 and 9 participates
in this activity. Each House team is
accompanied and guided by musicians
from Years 10 to 13. Each House
performs a set piece mass choir and
an ‘own choice’ Senior Chamber
piece. House points are awarded for
organisation, leadership, and creativity,
as well as, of course, for musicality.
The next major event has been the
annual ‘Bikeathon’, which sees
the pupil body from Years 7-13
competing in their House teams
to cycle the furthest distance
throughout a week in October. The
House to get the greatest distance
under their proverbial ‘wheels’ and
to fundraise the most, get the most
House points.
The highlight of the House year is
the Fashion Show in March. The
Show is themed and each House
is given carte blanche to design
clothes from recycled materials,
create audio-visual pieces as well as
choreograph many dance routines.
Previous themes have been ‘Surbiton
Goes to the Oscars’, ‘Surbiton
does STEM’, ‘Love Fashion’, ‘The
Olympics’, ‘Recycling the Decades’,
‘Surbiton Goes Global’, ‘Classics
on the Catwalk’ and, most recently,
‘Surbiton Goes Symphonic’.
The Fashion Show provides
an opportunity for all girls to
contribute towards a House piece
and brings together so many of
the positive learning habits that
we pride ourselves on at Surbiton
High School. There are creative
outlets in dress design, back
stage organisation, make-up and
accessory development, modelling,
choreography, IT skills in video and
music editing. The Fashion Show
has primarily supported The Full
Circle Fund, which is dedicated
to enhancing the quality of life of
babies, children and adults with life
threatening illnesses, at St George’s
Hospital, London. This event has
raised over £55,000 in the last six
years.
Other events in the Spring Term
are the House Public Speaking
Competition, The House Instrumental
46 47
House, Charities and
Enterprise

Music Competition, House Science,
House Geography Quizzes and
House Algebra competitions. Pupils
also take part in a competition to
design the programme for the annual
School Production, with House
points awarded for all entries and
extra points for the winning designs.
During the Summer Term, House
and Charity activities fully combine
to put on an entire Raise and Give
(RAG) week. This series of activities
raises funds and awareness for a
multitude of different charitable
endeavours, including the six main
House charities. Last year activities
ranged from a soak-a-teacher event
to a Tug of War competition to a
Teacher Auction, all in support of
our friends at YuYo.
House, Charities and
Enterprise
The main House point event of the
Summer Termis the School Sports
Day, which takes place in July. This
is an exciting event where pupils
compete in a variety of sports
and gain points for their House.
Points are awarded from 1st to 6th,
emphasising the need to take part as
well as rewarding success.
The House system provides a
framework within which all pupils
can develop and strive to have a
positive impact, alongside personal
growth and development. This
could be through taking part in
the numerous House events, going
the extra mile in your academic
studies or co-curricular activities.
The endeavour and legacy that
many generations of House and
Charity leaders have left behind
them continues to grow every year.
The sky is the limit so aim high and
get involved with all the inspiring
activities and events!
This ensemble is another “shining jewel” in the crown of the Music Department.
With over 40 members, it is the largest instrumental ensemble, with positions for
string, woodwind, brass and percussion players. Depending on the repertoire,
there are opportunities for pianists and harp players, too. Symphony Orchestra
has performed music by Mozart, Beethoven, Saint-Saens, Karl Jenkins, Vaughan
Williams and the film soundtracks to James Bond, The Magnificent Seven and
many more! Symphony Orchestra train hard and the expectation is in place
that pupils practice their music at home between rehearsals, and take it to their
instrumental teachers for additional guidance.
Woodwind, percussion & brass by invitation (grade 6 standard minimum; speak
to Miss Jones if you would like to be considered). Strings by audition (grade 5
standard minimum).
Symphony Orchestra
Intermediate Strings is a fun, un-auditioned strings group for beginner and intermediate players (grades 1-4). We play a wide
range of music, from classical pieces to pop songs, and occasionally perform with other ensembles.
Alongside learning the music, we develop ensemble skills and techniques to help you enjoy playing your instrument even
more. For more advanced members of the group, there are leadership opportunities and the occasional solo!
a range of challenging and thrilling
repertoire from baroque concertos to pop
song arrangements.
Alongside learning the notes, we focus
on developing the group’s sound by
discussing technique and ensemble skills.
Pupil leadership and communication
is encouraged in rehearsals, and every
player can contribute their ideas. The
group is sometimes conducted, but often
led by the players without a conductor.
Wind Band is a fun,
un-auditioned group for
beginner and intermediate
wind instrument players
(grades 1-4). We mainly play
well-known popular music
including jazz standards,
songs from musicals and
film soundtracks. As well
as learning the music itself,
we work on developing
our ensemble skills and
technique. For the more
advanced players, there
are leadership and solo
opportunities. We perform
in front of large audiences
at the end of term music
concerts, and occasionally
with other ensembles.
Ypres/Somme Trip
The Ypres and Somme trip is a three-day co-curricular English and History
event that runs as part of Activity Week. The trip provides pupils with the
opportunity to enhance their knowledge about WWI by visiting trenches,
cemeteries, memorials and museums. There is even the chance to practise
a little French when we shop for chocolate in Ypres and trudge through the
muddy trenches of Sanctuary Wood!
This enriching cultural and historical trip is further enhanced by exposure
to the poetry inspired by action in the trenches and the music written as
remembrance of the Great War. As part of the visit, pupils will be given
time to reflect on what they see and learn and encouraged to note down
their observations and artistic responses in a Reflection Handbook.
The focus this year is on balancing a varied programme of visits with the
necessary time to digest the magnitude of the First Great War. We hope that
the trip will therefore both be educational and fun.
Year 7 to form new friendships; beginning their journey at Surbiton High
the pupils to work effectively as part of a team. We believe that this will
increase their self-confidence and help them flourish.
This trip is possibly the most memorable experience in their first year at
Surbiton High School and many girls will come back feeling more confident
within themselves.
The dates for this visit are Monday 1 October to Friday 5 October. The year
Rowing is offered as a co-curricular
8, which encompasses complete
beginners through to experienced
seniors. At Year 11 we encourage
those girls who are capable to take
Why should girls row? Well, for a
start, it is tremendous fun. Rowing
is a rewarding, demanding and
exciting sport, which can be enjoyed
on many levels, from recreational to
elite, and is enjoyable for all ages in
Skiing
Surbiton High School is very proud
of its reputation as being one of the
largest and most successful school
ski clubs in the UK. We train weekly
on plastic, with half termly trips to
the indoor snowdome and encourage
additional snow training in school
holidays, where possible.
Our objective as a club is to provide a
platform of opportunity for all pupils
at Surbiton High School to be able
to ski. Whether that be beginners
wanting to try skiing for the first
time, an introduction to ski racing or
developing current skills for racing
nationally.
• Offers year-round skiing on artificial
surfaces as well as snow.
• Pupils from Year 2 to Year 13 are
welcome, mixing training with
others in the School.
• A great opportunity for pupils and
parents from all three schools to
mix, meet up and work together.
• Club members range from beginners
to international competitors, all
supporting each other and working
as one ‘team’.
