Lizzie and the Birds
Lizzie and the Birds is an imaginative text
that will inspire a wide variety of spoken language,
reading and writing opportunities and challenging
activities.
ENGLISH
Written by an experienced teacher and English Language consultant, this book
has enormous potential as a springboard for spoken language, leading into further
reading and writing activities.
This book can be used for Guided Reading, or as a whole-class story to develop
spoken language skills. All aspects of the English National Curriculum will be met
through the book and its corresponding Teacher Guide, and the writing produced by
pupils will meet all the requirements for the end of KS1 testing.
Here’s what some pupils from Year 2G in Mount Carmel
RC Primary School had to say:
Years 1 and 2 Lizzie and the Birds Teacher Guide 978-1-84654-922-9 £39.99
“Before even reading the book I knew it would be magnificent, and when I did read it, I
was blown away! The illustrations are unbelievably good and I’d like to read more books
about Lizzie.” Finbar, aged 7
“I love the page with all of the birds! Could I design my own?” Jack, aged 7
“I just can’t wait until you make another book about Lizzie and her birds!” Lexi, aged 7
Teacher Guide
Not only do the children get to read a heart-warming story, the
teacher is able to delve deeper into the story through the use of a
comprehensive Teacher Guide. The Teacher Guide provides fully
developed lesson ideas, activities and samples of children’s work.
Actual classroom displays and projects completed by different
classes are included to inspire teachers to build a unit of work around
the story. The Teacher Guide provides photocopiable scaffolds,
worksheets, word banks and guided reading question mats, so that
teachers can immediately deliver the activity in class without having
to spend time creating the resources.
The authors were extremely keen that the Teacher Guide would
support and inspire the teacher to get maximum use, benefit
and enjoyment out of the story with his/her class. Specific starter
lessons for spoken language lessons are provided which can then
be developed into further reading and writing activities. Due to the
themes within the story, both science and PSHE objectives are also
explored. By using this book, there are enough language ideas and
cross-curricular activities to get an extended use out of it; potentially a
couple of weeks can be spent exploring the book bringing it to life in
the classroom.
There’s a lot of pressure on teachers to deliver high quality literacy
learning to children, often with a wide range of abilities and cultural
backgrounds. The Literacy Box is a resource that quickly allows them to
match activities to children’s needs, while still providing that element of
challenge to ensure that all children are making meaningful progress.
In order for pupils to be successful in the new reading
The Literacy Box is the perfect way to prepare pupils for this,
as the whole product is about using a high quality text and
answering a range of questions representing comprehension,
grammar, punctuation and vocabulary.
If the pupils use this resource daily, it will become second
nature to answer questions in a context.
National Curriculum
Comprehension is clearly identified as one of the dimensions of
reading in the programmes of study from Year 1 through to Year 6.
Among the elements identified in the English Curriculum
programmes of study are:
• answering and asking questions
• drawing inferences such as inferring characters’ feelings, thoughts
and motives from their actions
• predicting what might happen from details stated and implied
• discussing words and phases that capture the reader’s interest and
imagination
• retrieving and recording information from non-fiction texts
• discussing and summarising main ideas and identifying key
supporting details
• distinguishing between statements of fact and opinion.
Develops 12 specific comprehension strategies using
different text types and genres:
understanding words
identifying the main idea
finding similarities and differences concluding
inferring
Dawn Robertson, Literacy Consultant
‘This ‘year group’ specific resource will be an invaluable
tool for teachers in the development and assessment
of their pupils’ comprehension and word reading
skills. As it gives teachers 18 six-page units of work
and three summative assessment tests that will
help assess pupil performance in line with the three
categories of Working towards expectations, Meeting
expectations and Exceeding expectations. Each book
comprises of detailed notes for teachers, clearly
explaining how to use these materials to track and
assess their classes with accuracy across the year,
meeting the demands of the National Curriculum. The
‘Assessment tool’ download is also an essential aid in
supporting this process of monitoring and tracking.
This resource will have a direct impact on learning as
it offers texts from a wide range of specific genre of
fiction and non-fiction, many of which link directly to
other subjects within the National Curriculum, giving
pupils a broad repertoire of reading experiences.
Clearly stated curriculum objectives underpin each
block of learning and give suggested outcomes for
text, comprehension and word reading levels. Lesson
plans are also provided for each of these that outlines
areas such as differentiation and ideas for individual,
pair and group work, so reducing the teacher’s
workload.
Each unit of work offers a text page, a comprehension
worksheet and a word reading worksheet. These
could be used as teaching tools to support guided
reading or for independent pupil response and will
have a direct impact on learning. Answers for these
are provided to ease the burden of marking and
allow teachers to focus on the quality of the pupil’s
responses. Pupils are encouraged to become more
confident in self-assessment by completing a section
entitled ‘My learning log’ to help them reflect on their
own learning and progress.
At £24.95 this resource is exceptional value as it
A review by Brenda Casey,
English Specialist, London
‘As an experienced writer of Primary English materials across
a range of media, I was delighted to discover this creative,
comprehensive print resource, specifically written to meet the
requirements of the English Curriculum. Covering the whole
Primary range, the quality and scope of texts is impressive, with
stimulating questions that promote critical thinking, develop
close reading, and provide great opportunities for transference of
skills, particularly through cross-curricular work. Its combination
of clear guidance and notes and robust assessment units are an
additional guarantee of outstanding teaching and learning, with
a digital assessment tool to ensure that individual progress is
easily and accurately tracked.
An exciting resource, that certainly earns its place as a
key, consistent element in the teaching of word reading and
comprehension.’
Listening Skills
Comprehensive photocopiable series, with specific spoken language objectives
identified to help teachers develop an effective spoken language programme.
Each book contains a series of developmental activities in the following areas:
• Visual discrimination and memory skills – being able to remember what they
have seen and answer questions accordingly.
• Listening memory skills – being able to remember what they have heard and
follow spoken instructions correctly.
• Listening comprehension – where pupils indicate the quality of their listening
skills by completing a visual representation of a message
Both sections provide the teacher with detailed information to ensure the
procedures are easy to follow and administer. Sections can be tackled in any order,
but the activities within each section gradually become more difficult, so should
be used from set one through to the final set.
Phonics
Phonological Awareness Skills
Remove the confusion around phonological awareness and
equip children with all the skills needed to conquer the world
of words—spelling, reading and writing—with Prim-Ed
Publishing’s new, must-have Phonological Awareness Skills.
This series of five comprehensive, photocopiable books
covers all the basics for early childhood children (from four
years of age) but also assists older pupils who are struggling
with phonics and spelling. It incorporates skills that fit into
any phonics or spelling programme. The series emphasises
spoken language.
Twelve skills are presented over the five books, in
developmental order, and include:
• Book 1: Auditory Discrimination, Rhyming and Alliteration
• Book 2: Segmentation and Syllabification, and Blending
• Book 3: Phoneme Matching and Phoneme Isolation
• Book 4: Phoneme Completion, and Phoneme Addition and
Deletion
• Book 5: Phoneme Segmentation, Phoneme Substitution
and Phoneme Reversal
The last seven skills relate to phoneme manipulation.
The skills are presented as fun, hands-on games and
activities for the whole class, small groups and pairs,
with full instructions (including the actual words to
say if required), all game/activity resources, supporting
worksheets if relevant, suggestions for differentiation,
formative and summative assessments and answers.
Literature links and suggested websites for games are
also included where applicable.
The activities are predominantly speaking and listening
activities for four-year-olds but are also appropriate for
pupils who struggle with letter-symbol correspondence,
those beginning to read and older children who need
support.
The games and activities are perfect for learning stations
and are easily managed by teaching assistants and
parent helpers. They can also be used for early finishers
to consolidate skills or to motivate young pupils needing
extension.
ACTIVITY 3: Feed the Monster
Materials required: Large cardboard cutout of a monster, firmly attached to
the end of a shoebox; blank squares of different coloured
cardboard (one for each different sound used.)
Instructions: Decide on a simple two-sound word such as on, at, is or a CVC
(consonant/vowel/consonant) word such as box, hat, cat to
demonstrate the process.
Say the individual sounds that make
up the word, and as each sound is
stated, ‘feed’ one coloured square of
cardboard into the monster’s mouth.
Refer to page 20 for an example of a
monster outline to use.
* For those children who are
developing letter/sound
correspondence, individual sounds
written on cards may be used.
ACTIVITY 4: What Word is That?
Materials required: Pictures of simple, familiar objects
Instructions: Place three different picture cards face up on the floor and ask
the children to name each one. Explain that you are going to say
the sounds that name one picture. Say each sound in the chosen
words, stretching out the sounds then blending them to make the
word.
The children have to point to the picture that
matches the word.
Encourage the children to repeat the sounds
and ‘run them together’ to make the word.
Repeat a number of times using different
pictures.
This activity is best carried out in small groups.
TEACHING
WRITING
STRATEGIES
Teaching Writing Strategies
ENGLISH
Teaching Writing Strategies is a
series of six books with the explicit,
overarching aim of teaching the skills
and strategies required to improve the clarity,
correctness and richness of children’s writing.
Within the series, children are taught to recognise, choose and use specific
strategies. The focus is on the process, rather than on practising, in this
instance, specific text types. To this end, priority is given to improving writing
at the sentence level.
There is a strong hands-on emphasis; that is, there is an expectation that
the children will write to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding.
Unlike many other writing activity books, the desired outcome is to have
the children structuring correct, enriched sentences to more clearly convey
ideas and information. The ultimate goal is for them to produce clear, precise
writing for a specific purpose and to understand that proofreading and
editing is an integral part of the writing process.
UNIT 11
APOSTROPHES IN CONTRACTIONS
Samples from Book 3
Contractions are new words made by joining words, usually two, and
leaving out some of their letters. An apostrophe is used in a contraction to
show that some letters are missing.
1. Write the sentence using two words instead of
the contraction.
(a) I’d like to swim with dolphins.
Wow! It’s awesome!
I’d love to touch one!
UNIT 3
ADVERBIALS
An adverbial can tell when, how or where the verb happens.
For example: Today, (when) the water flowed quickly (how) into
the lake (where).
(b) Let’s try and take some photos.
1. Circle the adverbial in each sentence telling more about the verb.
(c) We’ve already been to see the seals.
(d) They’ll be late unless they hurry.
2. Use the contraction in a sentence.
(a) We’d
(b) She’ll
(c) He is
3. Join the two words to make a contraction. Don’t forget the apostrophe.
(a) he is (b) you are
(c) they are (d) we are
(e) I am (f) you have
(g) she will (h) they have
Write ‘how’, ‘when’ or ‘where’ on the line.
(a) I love my bath at night.
(b) Rivers flow through city and field.
(c) The sea approaches with no sound.
3. Add an adverbial to tell ‘how’.
(a) The waves pound
(b) Rivers wander
4. Add an adverbial to tell ‘when’.
(a) The waves pound
(b) Rivers wander
5. Add an adverbial to tell ‘where’.
Proofreading for
errors is an important
skill highlighted in the
programmes of study
REVIEW ‘We have noticed that the New English Curriculum for writing emphasises on
children’s English skills the technical aspect rather than the creative side. Therefore, we have
found this teaching resource as a great teaching resource which hones in on these specific
skills and has allowed children to become aware of them. The whole school uses them as a
teaching tool during literacy lessons and booster sessions after school. We go through one
example in a section then allow the children to continue to follow all activities set: punctuation,
spelling, grammar and vocabulary/writing, we finally go through the answers with the children.
This has cut down our workload of planning, researching texts, creating questions as well as
producing answers. We have also started to now set activities for homework now the children
are familiar with how to go about answering them independently.’
Handwriting
The most comprehensive cursive handwriting programme available.
The
National Curriculum
states:
Writing also depends on fluent,
legible and, eventually,
speedy handwriting.
Pages from Book A
A joined handwriting programme of four
pupil workbooks to help pupils develop a
neat, legible handwriting style (cursive style).
Key Points :
• cursive style increases speed, fluency and
spelling accuracy. Research shows that
cursive handwriting discourages reversal
and transposition of letters and is also the
recommended style for pupils with dyslexia
• Handwriting Today introduces pupils to the
cursive style in a systematic and structured
fashion, with the much needed practice
pages and review pages to ensure success
• groups individual letters into ‘families’
based on direction of formation which aids
teaching and learning
• this series can be used in conjunction with
The Complete Spelling Programme where
pupils can practise the words in cursive
style to encourage retention of the pattern
of the word (once pupils have mastered
individual letter formation)
• in addition, the ‘Let’s Join In’ software
package perfectly complements this series,
easily allowing teachers to design additional
practice sheets in the exact cursive style
used in the Handwriting Today series
• ensures that schools have a ‘whole-school’
approach to handwriting in terms of
letter shapes, height and starting and
ending positions which will ensure pupils
encounter the same style year after year.
REVIEW ‘We really liked them. We will be using them as registration books and begin each school
day with 15 minutes to complete one unit of work. We will be asking the teachers to use them also as a
diagnostic tool to assess children’s learning in this area of the curriculum. To meet the increased focus
on ‘basic skills’ in literacy we are delivering 30-minute GRASP sessions daily that cover:
G = Grammar R = Guided Reading S = Spelling P = Punctuation and Handwriting.
We are using the Prim-Ed literacy box series as part of these sessions along with the spelling books.’
Mathematics Curriculum
The ability to problem-solve is given major emphasis in the Mathematics Curriculum. Its central aims are for pupils to:
• Solve problems by applying maths knowledge to a range of routine
and non-routine problems. This includes breaking down problems
into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
• Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry, conjecturing
relationships and developing an argument, justification or proof using
mathematical language.
• Have varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex
problems over time to develop mathematical reasoning and
competence allowing them to become fluent in the fundamentals
of mathematics.
REVIEW ‘I received these books from Prim-Ed, as
I was looking for useful material with which to stretch
and challenge some of our more able pupils in Year Six.
To that extent, the books have helped to lighten my
overall workload, as the problems are clearly presented
and easy to understand for any pupil whose reading level
may not be high. Children have gained much enjoyment
from tackling some of the problems, and have been able
to access various different aspects of the numeracy
curriculum without worrying that ‘I can’t do that!’.
For any teacher who is less confident about setting
or sharing the problems, the teachers notes more
than adequately fill this gap with guidance and helpful
information. The books are well worth the price, and will be
a useful supplement to anyone teaching more able pupils
if they wish to challenge pupils with something that is
outside the box or eye catching.’
Geography
GEOGRAPHY
Primary Geography is a comprehensive six-book series
covering the geography curriculum for Years 1–6.
Primary Geography enables teachers to bring the wider world
into the classroom by studying local, national and global issues
through a range of engaging learning activities. Through an
exploration of the different topics in each book, pupils acquire
the skills to carry out geographical enquiry through investigation,
analysis and practical work. Pupils explore the rich diversity of
human and natural environments and develop and deepen their
knowledge and understanding of the geographical processes
that shape the world around them.
Each topic is introduced by a text or representation to support
pupil understanding of geographical concepts. This is followed
by activities to extend and consolidate their knowledge and
skills. Each topic is also accompanied by a teacher page which
includes curriculum coverage, teaching notes and suggested
additional activities and resources. Teachers can assess and
monitor pupil progress with end-of-section assessments and can
record results with the easy-to-use digital assessment tool.
Exploring Geography (Ages 8-12+)
Each book contains enjoyable reading, map work and
writing activities on:
• resources • cultures
Exploring Geography and the major elements of the Key
Stage 2 Geography Curriculum:
• Location knowledge - location of the world’s countries,
using maps to study environmental regions, key
physical and human characteristics, countries, and
major cities
• Place knowledge - understanding geographical
similarities and differences
• Human and physical geography - studying rivers and
mountains, natural resources and economic activities
• Geographical skills - using maps and map symbols.
REVIEW ‘Generally I think the books are great. They have good tasks within
them and certainly provide plenty of opportunity for pupils to make progress.
There is a variety of geography that covers the continents of the world but
through both human and physical geography. I feel that the books would be quite
easy to follow as a scheme of work or just as nicely provide ideas for schemes
of work. I like the variety of tasks - in particular there are some which focus on
literacy and use of keywords. There are also good tasks on completing sentences
using text and maps to help pupils (for example looking at major rivers in Africa and
having to read text to fill in which river matches up with which sentence). There
are other examples too which follow a similar structure. I like that there are tasks
which develop pupils map skills. Getting pupils to use and understand maps from
an early age is really important. Something which in my opinion does not happen
enough at primary level. The assessment tasks in the books are good too.’
