Barclays finance the steam revolution
Barclays collaborates on the STEAM powered revolution
From providing finance for the world’s first steam railway between Stockton and Darlington, to
helping communities navigate our digital world, Barclays has always been very aware of our role in
society and supporting pioneers.
We have connections in East Anglia that go back hundreds of years through our Quaker roots so
we’re delighted to be working with STEAM Co. both at TEDxNorwichED as well as at STEAM Co. Days
across the UK, where our 15,000 Digital Eagles help out when they can.
There can be few causes closer to a creative heart than
creativity itself. Creativity is what it is to be human. It powers
our economy. It can, often does, connect our communities.
Creativity can not only provide jobs for our children, but
creative subjects and creative ways of teaching can help
engage them in their learning. It can help them get better
results, whether they have an academic or vocational bent.
It is a critical skill that will help our children outpace artless
robots, and ensure they not only survive, but thrive, in this
Fourth Industrial Revolution with its connection economy.
Yet creativity is at risk in our schools - misunderstood by
many teachers, parents, voters and policy makers.
Please help us. Let’s avert a Creativity Crisis. Together.

WE PUT #CREATIVITYFIRST
In the power of creativity to engage
children, create careers and connect
communities. Putting creativity first.
We feel it essential to nurture
creativity in our young people and
agree with Prof. Robert Winston who
said we have to ‘get them in primary’.
But given pressure on primary
teachers, we connect schools with
talent often latent in their community.
STEAM CO. DAYS
We’re a non-profit community
enterprise that powers communities
to inspire their children with creativity
by giving them the Inspiration and
Resources to run STEAM Co. Days
where children get to choose from
creative thinking and doing activities
across the STEAM skills of Science,
Tech, Engineering, Art and Maths.
A UNIQUE COLLABORATION
These ‘school days like no other’
are staged by a unique collaboration
of carers which might include
parents, grand parents, creatives,
students, creatives, local businesses
all working with teachers.
We’re connecting with a range
of community organisations from
Rotary to the RSA and education
groups and MATs as well as trade
bodies and cultural institutions.
We run half day sampler school
sessions as well as events and
briefings around the UK to showcase
creativity and connect communities.
They might be evening or one to
two day events for local children and
communities to see STEAM Co. Days.
We’ve held these in Liverpool,
Sunderland and Ironbridge and an
annual #ARTCONNECTS Festival.

WHAT EVERY PARENT WANTS
Many feel that the education
system we have today was conceived
primarily to produce the skills
needed by the industrial revolution.
But, with Artificial Intelligence and
Robotics on the rise and taking many
middle class professional as well as
manual jobs, we need to ensure our
children have the skills they need to

outpace the robots, to do what they
can’t. Creativity is key to that.
Every parent wants to see their
children financially independent as
soon as possible.
Creativity is a critical skill, it can be
taught and parents should prioritise
it as it presents great career options
and transferrable skills.

One of the biggest obstacles to
young people embarking on creative
careers can be their parents and
sometimes teachers who aren’t
aware of the opportunities available.
STEAM Co. is a proud member of
The Creative Industries Federation
who are the voice for the UK’s
creative industries from advertising
to fashion and video games.
They represent Britain’s fastest
growing sector, which contributes
£91.8bn in GVA to the UK’s economy
- larger than aerospace, automotive,
life sciences and oil and gas sectors
The Fed is now working on a
Creative Careers Campaign to win
the hearts and minds of young
people aged 11-16, that will inspire
a passion for creativity and what it
could lead to when they leave school.
The Fed plan to develop the
campaign to launch early 2019.
