News from your Shropshire Councillor
Claire Wild
BERRINGTON PARISH - PROPOSED COMMUNITY HUB IN CROSS HOUSES
Shropshire Council are due to publish the draft Local Plan Review later this year. As
soon as there is any further information available I will update you via this page and
also at the Parish Council Meetings.
BERRINGTON MEADOWS (Fletcher Development)
Many of the residents from High Cross Avenue have been concerned about the recent planning application
that was submitted by Fletcher Homes for plots 17 - 21 where they have been built from 850mm to 350mm
higher than the current permission. There is concern that the heights are in fact higher than those stated in
the application. I have arranged for the Property Services team at Shropshire Council to take independent
measurements to confirm the levels before the application is heard by the Planning Committee. There is also
concern about the increased flooding of gardens on High Cross Avenue directly as a result of the new
development. Myself and Councillor Eric Brayne will be speaking against this application when it comes
before the Planning Committee in respect of the increased height, flooding and associated draining issues.
BROMPTON PLAYING FIELDS GATE & DRAINAGE PROJECTS
As many of you will be aware the National Trust are the owners of Brompton Playing Fields and lease them
to the Parish Council. Over the past year Councillor Eric Brayne has been working with the National Trust to
improve the facilities. The first part of the project was to install new gates. Over the coming months Eric will
be working with the National Trust to clear all the ditches and drains and improve the entrance to prevent
flooding.
Please join me in thanking Councillor Eric Brayne from our PC, Stephen Armstrong and Colin Morris from the
National Trust and Colin’s team of rangers Sue, Phil, Jack, Andrew, Gareth and Harvey who fitted the gates
and will be undertaking the drainage works.
There is still the ongoing concern as to the amount of dog fouling that is taking place on the fields. Please
ensure you pick up after your dogs.
Kind regards,
News from Christ Church C.E. Primary School
Learning, Listening, Living
This term we have the excitement of a Performance Poet working
with us in school. Emma Purshouse is a slam poetry champion
and we are looking forward to the work that she will do with
Green and Yellow children. A huge thanks to Wenlock Poetry
Festival who have funded part of this exciting opportunity. We
value the Arts and love giving curriculum time to performance.
Our new children have settled in well! It has been lovely to see all
the hard work of home visits and transition sessions paying off as
they are coming in so happily. Partly they are so used to working
in the school building – as we work closely with Childrensworld
which many of them attended – but also, a huge thanks to
parents who have prepared them well for school and to Mrs
Martin who makes Red Class such fun!
If you are thinking about school places for September 2019 (and
scarily it is getting to application times!) then please don’t think
you have to wait for an ‘Open Day’. We are a family school and
welcome visitors anytime – we have weekly ‘Stay & Play’ sessions
and I am always happy to spend an hour with potential parents
and show you around personally. Just ring the Office and book a
time.
Great news: we have a grant from the National Lottery to help build an outdoor wooden classroom/shelter
on the playground (think lovely garden gazebo!). Along with the sensory reading garden we are creating at
the back of school, this means we are really utilising our outdoor space and making the most of the beauty of
our grounds.
Red Class: Year R and Year 1
Red Class are thinking about ‘Ourselves’ and learning about all the special things that they enjoy doing.
Green Class: Year 2 and Year 3
Green Class are ‘Getting Ready, Set, Go!’ to make sure they know about health, fitness and hygiene. They
are researching their favourite sports stars as well as enjoying Roald Dahl’s ‘The Twits’ – but not following
the hygiene habits of Mr and Mrs Twit!
Yellow Class: Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6
Yellow Class are looking to the future, playing ‘Guess Who?’ as they think about different jobs and careers
that there are in our community.
Remember we are the catchment school for many villages: Cressage, Cross Houses, Harley, Cound,
Coundmoor and Sheinton but we also have children attending from further afield. We work closely with
Childrensworld UK who are onsite and offer an “Outstanding” (Ofsted) nursery and wrap-around childcare
for before/after school and the holidays. Ring the office for more details on 01952 510383.
An introductory message from the new member of our team
– Rev Alison Walker
In Hereford Cathedral on Sunday 1 st July I was ordained deacon by Bishop Alistair. It was a
beautiful service in which those of us to be ordained made declarations before God and the
congregation present. Deacons are called specifically to serve and pray for the communities in which
they are set; it is a life of self-giving following the pattern of Christ who washed the feet of his
disciples.
Following the service there was a time to celebrate with friends and family and take many a
photograph.
My ordination marks the beginning of my journey into ordained ministry as I serve my curacy
(training post) in the Wenlock Team. I will be learning how to do many new things, and making
mistakes along the way I’m sure! My ordination marks a beginning, but it also marks the end of a
long process of discernment and training to reach this point.
I came to a recognizable point of belief in the Christian faith around the age of 13 or 14, after angrily
completing confirmation classes and initially believing that it was all a fairy tale. As my faith was
nurtured by my vicar and the local rural church I began to take a small part in helping to lead the
church youth group and occasional Sunday services. I then went off to university to study
Chemistry and it wasn’t until returning home from a trip to Bolivia with a Christian charity one
summer that I discerned a calling to ordained ministry in the Church of England. As I finished my
degree I began the process of discernment with the church and eventually arrived at Trinity College
in Bristol newly married to my husband Paul.
In Bristol I have studied Theology—studying God and his ways revealed through the Scriptures and
the life of the Church—as well as being practically prepared for ordained ministry. I have loved
studying Theology and this passion has led me to embark on a PhD in Theology which I will
continue during my curacy and hope to complete while I’m here.
Directly before my ordination we were required to go on retreat for three days at the Bishop’s House
in Hereford. As part of this there was a series of talks focusing on particular Saints of the Church.
One such Saint was Saint Peter who is often depicted in
Christian artwork holding the ‘keys of the kingdom’ given
to him by Jesus Christ as a sign of authority in leading the
church. According to ancient tradition Peter became the first
Pope. Rather than focus on Peter’s leadership, the talk
instead spoke of St. Peter’s care and hospitality, his service
to the poor, sick, lonely and oppressed.
As I seek to serve in whatever way I can in the Wenlock
area, I realise that I am but a guest in your communities and
churches over the three or four years I am here. I look
forward to getting to know this area and lots of you in the
coming months and years. And although I am a guest, I
wish to extend an invitation to consider St. Peter’s response
to Jesus’ question ‘Who do you say that I am?’: ‘You are the
Messiah, the Son of the living God.’ Matthew 16:15-16
Prayerful best wishes, Revd Alison Walker – Curate in The
Wenlock Team of Parishes.
The Reverend Sarah Hare writes
Thank you to everyone who came to visit St Margaret’s Church in Betton
Strange during the Heritage Open Days in September. It is a very special
church tucked in a wood and it has no electricity or water and was until about a year ago gas
lit. We had 122 visitors over the two days it was open.
Thank you to all those in the homes and the hall in Betton Strange who supported us over
these two days with a rather increased number of people coming through the village. I am
very grateful to those from our church and community in Betton Strange who took part in
getting the church and paths ready in cleaning and clearing, those that organised the car
parking and those who gave their time to be in the church as people came to visit. Thank you
particularly to Betton Strange Hall for the very kind loan of their history boards which people
found fascinating. I am grateful to everyone who has put their time and effort in to making
the Open Days very special but I would like to say one special thank you to Gareth Williams
who did the majority of the organising, the publicity, the signage and gave two days of his
time to be there in the church and to be able to provide people with the information that he
had about the church.
If you were not able to get to one of the Open Days, then please do come to one of our
services. We have our Harvest Festival on Sunday 7 th October at 3pm and on the 4th
November we will then return to our usual service time of 9.45am.
Thank you for all you that give to our churches in many different ways.
GARDENING MATTERS
10 Autumn tips to prepare your garden for Winter
1. Mulch vegetable beds and herbaceous borders; this will benefit the texture and structure of
the soil, so your plants will be stronger the following season.
2. Now is the time to start sowing hardy annual flowers, such as Nigella, Ammi Majus, Sweet
Rocket and Cornflowers. In the vegetable patch, sow spring onions and oriental leaves, which
will overwinter and produce an early crop in spring
3. Sow winter hardy green manures (Field Clover, Hungarian Rye Grass, and Winter Tares) to
keep your vegetable plot covered for the winter.
4. Plant spring flowering bulbs in borders and containers. Narcissus, Alliums and other bulbs
can be planted now. Tulip bulbs should be planted in November once the soil temperature has
cooled down.
5. Continue to deadhead Dahlias, to prolong flowering until the first frosts. Repeat-flowering
roses can also be deadheaded now, for an October flush of flowers (unless you want to enjoy
the rosehips!).
6. Continue to harvest potatoes, squash, courgettes, etc. Harvest
the last beans and cut down foliage, leaving the roots in the soil to
release nitrogen into the soil for next year's brassica crop.
7. Rake leaf litter from lawns and borders, to make homemade
leaf mould - an excellent soil improver.
8. Continue to water container plants, to ensure that they do not
dry out.
9. Plant soft fruit whilst the ground is still warm, to establish a
good root system for a strong, healthy crop next year.
10. Plant up Autumn/Winter containers, to provide colour
throughout the colder months. Evergreen shrubs, Hellebores and Skimmias, Cyclamen and
winter flowering Violas make great displays, lasting until early spring.
If you have any top-tips be it gardening, cleaning etc. or have an article that you think the residents of Atcham and
Berrington Parishes would find interesting please get in touch with the Village Pump Editor as we are keen to ensure
that The Pump is an interesting read and not just information and adverts. We look forward to hearing from you.
