Introducing a new breed of Turf Magazine -
dedicated entirely to Sod Mowing
Welcome to the first edition of TheCut, our new yearly turf mowing magazine
designed especially for those producing and more specifically mowing sod in
the USA. This journal is for managers, operators and maintenance crew alike
as an introduction to the Trimax Mowing Systems community and to give
you clear, sensible and reliable information from writers and experts within
the industry.
We want it to be entertaining and informative, at times contrary, but above all
useful. Inside you’ll find a mixture of Trimax news, product and maintenance
information, sod mowing features and regular columns on a range of topics
related to sod mowing.
I hope you enjoy this first issue, let us know what you think on
Twitter, Instagram and Facebook (or you can email me direct).
Tell us what you love, tell us what you hate, and tell us how
we can continue to help make your mowing lives easier!
Here’s to the first edition.
"The challenge we've all got regardless of
brand is that servicing a roller mower with
a stub can be complicated. Stubs need to
be clean, adhesives need to be used, a
given sequence of replacement needs to be
followed, and if not maintained regularly or
correctly we see worn stubs and compromised
retention. Our LocTEK system eliminates all
of that, it's fool-proof!" says Bob Sievwright,
Say goodbye to high maintenance
roller retention systems
At the Turfgrass Producers International
Conference in Arizona in February, Trimax
Mowing Systems announced that it’s saying
goodbye to high maintenance stub and roller
retention systems and introduced LocTEK
– a patent pending stubless roller bearing
retention system unique to Trimax.
The main benefits of LocTEK over the
traditional stubbed roller system are:
1. Vastly Increased Retention and Strength:
Traditional stubbed roller systems secure roller
stubs directly into bearings using grub screws
or collar locks, but this method has long been
subject to stub and bearing wear from regular
horizontal loading, and as a result - roller
retention issues.
Traditional roller stubs often need to be
re-machined or replaced to correct any wear
issues effecting roller retention and alignment.
LocTEK does away with these issues
completely by using a high tensile threaded
bolt, inserted through a protective zinc coated
sleeve which locks the roller, bearing and side
channels together. This simple yet innovative
bolt system is not only free from wear but also
provides a much stronger retention option and
ensures ongoing and accurate roller alignment.
The new LocTEK system also includes
increased strength tri-bolt bearing housings,
which bolt to the side channels and have been
upgraded from a two-bolt system.
2. Increased Replacement Ease and Lower
Maintenance Costs:
LocTEK vastly reduces replacement time.
Previously, removing an adhesive-fixed stub
from a bearing could be challenging and
time consuming. LocTEK doesn’t require
any specialist tools and can be replaced in
as little as 15 minutes. The bolt can easily be
removed from the roller and bearing system
with an impact gun and the zinc coated sleeve,
assembled with anti-seize, can be easily
removed from the bearing.
Where some traditional systems require
re-machining of the roller stub to correct
misalignment, or if the roller stub is too far
gone - you may need to purchase a full new
roller. LocTEK is comprised of independent
parts that can be purchased separately,
meaning just the desired part can be acquired,
providing significant cost savings.
3. Increased Bearing Life:
One of the most common causes of bearing
failure is stub misalignment. Misalignment
in roller stubs can cause the outer race of
the bearing to oscillate inside the housing,
wearing out bearings and the bearing housing
prematurely and increasing replacement
frequency. Having fully eliminated
misalignment, LocTEK bearings suffer less
stress and last significantly longer. LocTEK
also uses market proven, high quality bearings
which have been subject to years of Trimax
in-field testing.
To further aide bearing longevity LocTEK
provides new added protection against water
damage through a clever convex ridge on
the end of LocTEK rollers. The roller ridge
prohibits water running down a vertical roller
in transport mode which can result in pooling
around the bearing.
LocTEK is now being produced on all Trimax
Pegasus, Procut, and X-Wam mowers and can
be purchased as a retrofit system specifically
developed for conversions of stubbed bearing
systems on selected mowers.
Are you ready for the
Labor Shortage?
Finding workers in the new millennium
can be a real challenge.
There is an old joke about good help being hard
to find. However, in too many green businesses
the challenge of finding a good worker is no
laughing matter.
The current low unemployment rate means it
is even tougher to find good workers than ever
before. Going into June, the seasonally adjusted
unemployment rate in the US was 3.9 percent,
according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
A rate below 4 percent is unheard of in recent
times. In 2011, it was at 9.1 percent and, as
recently as 20 months ago, was at 5 percent.
“While there are different challenges in different
markets, it’s a hard time to be hiring people,”
says Patrick Finlen, CGCS. He is general manager
at The Olympic Club, San Francisco, CA. “There
are no easy solutions.”
“Getting people actually to work is a problem,”
says Mayfield McCraw, owner of Hope Plantation
Turf, Telephone, TX. They have about 30
employees who should be working – but he often
finds his Millennial employees sitting in cool,
shady places on their smartphones. “They ignore
the operation,” he says.
McCraw prefers workers who are conscientious…
ones who give two weeks’ notice before quitting
and who work hard right to the last day. News of
drug tests, mandatory at Hope Plantation Turf,
can result in unplanned absences. “It’s happened
20 or 30 times that people just don’t show up
when they can’t pass the test,” McCraw says.
“Drugs are a super bad problem.”
Sometimes, it is tough just to hire workers.
He says the Millennial generation is a special
challenge. He notes that their attitudes to work
are different – when hiring, he has been asked
whether he can give an extra week off beyond the
normal vacation package. It is not uncommon for
a Millennial to simply quit work for three or four
months to travel around.
Many object to anything other than a Monday-
Friday work week. They are not worried about
getting a new job. “Everyone is having a harder
time as the labor market tightens,” Finlen
says. “It’s not good or bad; it’s just a different
generation.”
Established in 1860, The Olympic Club boasts 45
holes of Willie Watson and Robert Trent Jonesdesigned
golf and other amenities including an
18-room hotel. And, while they offer year-round
employment, the Club has had three open slots in
the golf maintenance department and several in
the clubhouse for an extended time.
In San Francisco, Finlen believes the job market is
even tighter than elsewhere. That means people
have no fear of not being hired when they come
back from their trips.
The traffic situation is another challenge.
Without good access to public transportation,
many workers simply are unwilling to sit in rush
hour an hour each way.
In the Midwest, the challenge is a bit different.
There, having access to a car is almost mandatory
as farms and golf courses are scattered outside
population centers. And in the resort areas of the
Southeast, operations in places like Hilton Head
Island provide bus transport to get workers to
jobsites.
One way McCraw has tried to retain workers is
to provide a great work situation. They upgraded
their 20-foot Trimax mowers to 34-foot units.
Then, they added three John Deere 6110Rs, fully
air conditioned and with music, to pull them.
“The R-series has really nice cabs,” McCraw says.
Now, there is no excuse for not mowing sod. He
a hard time to be hiring people"
- Patrick Finlen | General Manager
The Olympic Club, San Francisco, CA
bought the units with 100-200 hours on them
and figures they pay for themselves on what
they save on diesel fuel. Better, they are a nice
work environment.
“Whether it is hot, cold, or misting rain, you
can’t use the weather as an excuse not to
mow,” McCraw says.
GOVERNMENT CONCERNS
All of the tough talk out of Washington, on
both sides of the aisle, means the competition
has become fierce among turf farms and
golf courses to get and keep good workers.
Bidding wars for experienced workers are not
uncommon and are apt to accelerate as the
labor market gets tighter.
The push for stronger immigration laws will
continue to make labor tight. And, if it is your
first foray into hiring, be sure you toe the line
on state and federal laws.
Pundits note there is rarely lots of time to do a
job…but there always seems to be time to do
the job over if it is messed up the first time.
That underscores the importance of making
the right hiring decision the first time around.
First and most obvious is the cost to hire a
new worker and to train them. However, if the
individual is not fit for the job (or the job does
not fit the individual), there is an additional
cost to replace that person.
It may not seem like a lot, but that interval
between one worker leaving the job and
another being up to speed on the job has a
cost. It takes time for any worker to learn the
expectations at an operation and to absorb
the culture and mission of the operation.
This can be internalizing pride in the quality
sod product produced at a sod farm or being
on-board with providing a great member
experience at a golf course.
There is strain and distraction on managers,
too, as they try to find a good hire and still
keep the rest of the crew on track as they work
short-handed.
The Harvard Business Review found that 80
percent of employee turnover is due to bad
hiring decisions. There are several avenues
open to finding a good fit. The obvious –
but often ignored – one is to ask current
employees if they know of someone who
would want the job.
Many guest workers – especially those
with Hispanic backgrounds - value the work
atmosphere as much as the dollars. Within
reason, the good treatment and respect
they get at one job can outweigh financial
considerations offered elsewhere where they
do not feel as valued.
Don’t despair of finding local help. Senior
citizens, while not the most physically adept,
are reliable and generally have a good work
ethic. Another place to look for solid workers is
at local school vo-tech programs. The teachers
there typically know the students and can
serve as a first filter for getting the right
worker into the right job.
Certification programs – for jobs like small
engine repair and equipment maintenance –
are good benchmarks for what a prospective
worker can do.
Whether the job is a skilled position or an unskilled
seasonal assignment, it is imperative
to have a supervisor spend the first day with
the new hire. Little things make a difference
to continued success. While a small amount of
joshing will help bring a newbie into the family,
it is important that the new hire not feel
overwhelmed or outcast.
Put new workers with the better members
of the team so they absorb the positive work
ethic and the positive vibe that old hands can
impart.
CASE STUDY
Carolina Fresh Farms & their
7 Trimax Pegasus Mowers
Carolina Fresh Farms is a family owned operation. Their story goes
back to the late 1940s when John "Tony" Fogle, a returning WWII veteran,
bought a small farm of less than 100 acres near South Carolina rail road town of Neeses.
Tony started out farming cotton, corn and
soy beans. Always a wily entrepreneur and
business man, he kept his eyes out for viable
opportunities to expand and diversify.
BRANCHING INTO GRASS
Fresh Farms first encounter with cultivating
grass was in the 1960s when the dairy industry
needed hay. Tony acquired land to cultivate
coastal Bermuda and laid the foundation for
what is today one of the biggest sod businesses
in South USA.
Now, with three thousand acres under irrigation
at two farms, Neeses in South Carolina and the
smaller Green Creek farm in Rutherfordton,
North Carolina, Carolina Fresh Farms cultivates
and supplies 6 different varieties of sod. They
supply the domestic, commercial and sports
markets all year round.
TRIMAX PEGASUS IS PART OF THE EQUATION
With their sod operation covering enough
ground to house 2,718 football fields, Carolina
Fresh Farms places a premium on reliable
equipment. They wouldn’t be without their
seven Trimax Pegasus mowers.
As Johnny Fogle, Andy’s son and one of the CFF
owners says “We run ‘em 9 to 10 hours a day...
five to five and a half days a week. There’s no
comparison to the other brands we were using.”
THE TRIMAX SUPERIOR CUT IMPACTS PROFITS
Apart from their legendary reliability, the
Pegasus mowers also give a better cut. Johnny
says “We think that our sod is better now than
it was before because...with the blades like
this and all, it does a better job of mowing the
grass.”
This has a direct impact on the businesses
bottom line because as Johnny explains,
achieving a good finish with the mowers
improves root growth. “You don’t want it to
grow up this way, so the better job you do
mowing it the roots grow better. It enables
you to harvest your sod earlier – and that’s the
name of the game. The quicker you can plant it
and harvest it, it’s gonna have a lot to do with
your profits.”
MINIMAL MAINTENANCE
Running any agricultural equipment between
eight-to-ten hours a day, five days a week,
one would expect maintenance to be an issue.
According to Johnny, this is not the case with
the Trimax Pegasus machines.
“Some of our Trimax mowers have been running
for 10 years now. Same ones, and no plan on
replacing”.
SAME AGAIN, PLEASE
Since buying their first Pegasus in 2008,
Carolina Fresh Farms have bought another
six. The ruggedness and amazingly low
maintenance requirements make them the
ideal, cost effective, machine for the neverending
mowing requirements of sod production.
Carolina Fresh Farms and Johnny in particular,
swear by their Trimax Pegasus machines, “I’ve
seen just about every brand made and I don’t
think there’s any brand close to ‘em.” He adds,
“I recommend it to anybody who wants to
buy... who needs a quality mower, they ought
to buy it.”
Trimax Mowing Systems are proud to be held
in such high regard and recommended by turf
farmers like Carolina Fresh Farms and owners
like Johnny and Andy Fogle.
PRODUCT FOCUS
How Trimax’s new
Pegasus QuikLift
feature saves both
turf and equipment
Commercial mower manufacturer, Trimax Mowing Systems,
have introduced QuikLift - a unique electronic system to lift
mower decks off the ground without the need to disengage the tractor PTO.
QuikLift’s features help increase efficiency and
reduce maintenance. QuikLift helps eliminate
turf damage by removing lateral movement
of the mower rollers on the turf when making
tight turns which increases yield and turf usage
areas.
Because of the reduction in lateral movement of
the roller, bearing life is greatly increased as force
on the bearing is eliminated. There are benefits
for the tractor also. Because the PTO can still be
engaged with the decks in the QuikLift position
the operator doesn’t need to switch the PTO
off and on. This reduces PTO stress and reduces
maintenance for the tractor itself.
The Trimax QuikLift is unique because the
system utilizes electrical proximity sensors to
restrict the hydraulic rams from lifting. This is
favorable compared to mechanical steel-on-steel
systems which transfer high forces into the steel
frame causing fatigue over time and mechanical
wear points.
QuikLift is operated by a control box placed
inside the cab of the tractor. Since it’s not
fixed, drivers can place the control wherever
they see fit for rapid operation. Decks can be
lifted and dropped at the touch of a button
and it’s able to be operated from the most
convenient place for the driver.
For added safety, the control monitors power
to the QuikLift system, guarding against any
possible PTO damage that may occur from
unexpected power failure to the sensors. An
LED Light system indicates when QuikLift is
safe to operate.
Operators can fully customize QuikLift’s deck
lift heights, giving them both the best user
experience and operational effectiveness. With
a simple adjustment between the pre-set holes
located near the proximity sensors, operators
can lift the deck anywhere between just off
the ground to 3 feet high. This adjustment,
dictated by the nature and evenness of the
terrain, can speed up turns and further increase
productivity.
"QuikLift is going to help our
customers mow much more
efficiently. It's also covered by our
three-year warranty, which is the
longest warranty on the market -
more than double what others are
offering, because we stand behind
our products!"
- Bob Sievwright, Founder and CEO
of Trimax Mowing Systems
Retrofit Options Available
A temporary lift system that enables the decks to be
lifted off the ground without disengaging the PTO.
Easy to use cab mounted control system
Reduces mower fatigue by cutting the flow to the hydraulic cylinders to hold the decks - greatly reducing
forces on the mower, compared with mechanical restriction solutions
Bypassing the QuikLift feature to raise the decks into transport position requires the user to push the button
on the cab controller. This provides an added level of safety in case the PTO has not been disengaged
QuikLift features an adjustable temporary lift height for optimal experience and efficiency
Uses proven Trimax hydraulic valve bank
technology which has completed millions
of cycles over the past 7 years
CASE STUDY
Pegasus increases fairway
widths and playability at
Starke Park Golf Course
February 7th 2017 was a big day for the Starke Park Golf Course in
Texas - it marked the maiden voyage of their new Trimax Pegasus.
Bruce Allan was in his first year as General
Manager when a new mowing system had to
be purchased. His choices: Go with golf course
tradition and a new reel mower, or investigate
other systems.
WHERE PECAN TREES RULED THE FAIRWAYS
Established in 1938, Starke Park Golf Course
has always been a classic parkland course,
nestled in a sweeping bend of the Guardelupe
River in the city of Seguin, Texas.
Blessed with undulating terrain, the course
is easy on the legs. The official website
says ”Fewer courses offer a shorter or more
enjoyable walk and whether you’re walking or
riding, there’s always a towering Pecan tree
around to offer some refreshing shade.”
A legacy from the grove that once grew there,
the Pecan trees are beautiful, but a grass
mowing nightmare – they shed branches that
haunt the edges of the fairways and the rough.
Reel mowers are no match for Pecan branches.
As Bruce says “… that is really difficult to deal
with, it always knocks the bed knives out of
alignment and so we tried to stay away from
the trees as much as possible and therefore a
lot of the fairways were really tight.”
FINDING THE SOLUTION WITH TRIMAX
Bruce needed a mower that would give a great
cut to the Bermuda fairway grass as well as
handle the tougher aspects of the rough.
In his search he called on Trimax’s Jamie Kizer
for a demo.
He was impressed, saying of the Pegasus “It
had a really good cut, comparable to what the
reel mowers were doing...”
Initial cost and subsequent savings offered by
the Pegasus / tractor combination sealed the
deal for Bruce: “It turned out we could buy a
new tractor and the mower for the same price
as a self-propelled fairway unit and it does
the same job in about half the time with one
person so its been a great fit for us.”
THE PEGASUS PAYS ITS WAY
Mowing the roughs used to take five days and
several guys.
With the Pegasus the job’s done by Wednesday
– a saving of two days every week.
And those pesky branches? “The Pegasus goes
right through them like its nothing, so we were
able to increase the width of our fairways by
about 20 feet on each side.”
Thanks to the Pegasus, the wider fairways
have changed the nature of the course, making
it more playable.
For Bruce, this is a bonus along with huge
savings in labor, time and maintenance costs,
which already amount to thousands of dollars.
On maintaining the Pegasus he says “All we
do is grease it and that’s all we’ve done. It’s
fabulous.”
“We went through a whole season this year
without changing any blades. Even though
we hit those limbs, we didn’t have to change
anything. Last week I asked my mechanic if we
need to change the blades and he said ‘Why?’
So we went through a whole season with those
blades and it looks like were gonna go through
a second with them too.”
THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT
Happy customers are usually a good measure
of success.
In Bruce’s case, his golfers; especially the
seniors, need to be satisfied and it seems the
Pegasus is a hit “A lot of people ask me about
the quality of cut. Our seniors really love it...
and really if no one knew what was happening
they would never know the difference (from a
reel mower), its been that good for us.”
At last, a commercial
blade set-up that will
go the distance!
INNOVATION COMMITMENT
LazerBladez are a complete blade
system developed specifically
for Trimax multi-spindled
rotary mowers.
SPECIFICATIONS
Blades
‘Tilt-forward’ design
LazerBladez offset mounting hole causes the blade to ‘tilt-forward’
whilst cutting. This ensures that when the going gets really tough the
cutting edge ends up in line with the blade carrier, the position other
blades start from!
Increased Blade Mass
LazerBladez are wider than other similarly sized blades, resulting in
more mass for higher impact in heavy going.
Upturn
The carefully refined upturn on the blade’s trailing edge gives better
grass lift and discharge characteristics. Also available in non-upturn for
specific applications.
Full-Length Cutting Edge
Trimax rotary mowers are so efficient they can cut at very high ground
speeds and still produce a better finish than others do when cutting
slowly. At slow speeds the blade tip does most of the work, but at very
high ground speeds when the mower travels further between cuts,
some grass needs to be cut further along the blade.
LazerBladez have a full-length cutting edge that ensures all grass is
struck by the sharpened part of the blade.
Unique Steel Alloy
LazerBladez engineers have chosen a special steel alloy that’s
produced specifically for Trimax. This very high grade alloy is hardened
significantly more than standard spring steels for longer life, yet
retains the toughness essential for commercial mowing applications.
Heavy Duty Strength Bolts
A high-energy fling-tip requires a special bolt and the LazerBladez
design is right up to the job! Made to grade 12.9 strength
specifications, this bolt has a large head that won’t wear quickly, thus
preventing blade separation. A 12mm self locking nut completes a
blade bolt design that is significantly stronger than any other in its
class.
Blade Carrier
The blade carriers for LazerBladez are made from heavy spring steel
and designed to minimize flex for a more consistent cutting height.
Plates
Hardened and tempered spring steel plates support the center of the
blade carrier.
Looking
Sharp!
The only thing more impressive
than a sharp-dressed man is a
sharp-bladed mower.
“It’s all about maintenance,” says Bob
Laverty, sales manager with Glenn B.
Dorning, a major dealer in Ontario, California.
Family owned since 1936, Glenn B. Dorning
prides themselves on being “the go-to-guys”
for Trimax, Kubota, Diamond and several
other brands.
18 | TURFMAX « JULY 2018
When it comes to knowing mowers and turf
equipment, Bob Laverty has helped a lot of
operations stay productive.
“The most important maintenance requirement
is lubricating all moving parts and keeping the
blades sharp and clean,” Laverty advises.
A good, smooth cut not only boosts the quality
of the grass but extends the life of the mower.
“You are spending a lot of money on chemicals
to maintain grass and on the healing process
for repairing damaged turf,” says Raymond
Prefume, Trimax Mowing Systems USA Sales
Representative for the Western States. “Why run
a mower with dull blades that will tear the turf
again?”
On top of its ability to be gentler on the turf,
a sharp blade requires less horsepower to do
its job. Not only does that save fuel but it
also makes mower operation easier on the
equipment, itself, and on the person running the
mower.
“Running a mower should feel like cutting warm
butter,” Prefume says.
Both Laverty and Prefume agree that a good
overall maintenance program is the key to
getting that warm butter feel day in and day out.
Prefume recommends a maintenance sharpening
about once every 40 hours of operation. On a
typical 18-hole golf course, that comes out to a
weekly cycle. He notes that it only takes 15 or 20
minutes to put a nice edge on a blade.
“It takes no time at all. It keeps the blade
sharp. It keeps the turf from getting ripped up,”
Prefume continues.
On a sod farm, a mower typically will travel more
acres than a golf course, even if the hours of
operation stay about the same 40-hour work
week. Of course, the sod farm is not mowing
roughs or even fairways…so the grass itself
might be a bit gentler.
In any case, a weekly touch-up with a hand
grinder will pay off in a better product for the sod
farm to sell.
A shop foreman should not be overly concerned
about a touch-up sharpening hurting the life of a
mower blade.
“It takes a while before you see wear on a blade,”
Prefume says. “By the time you see wear from
Bob Laverty, Sales Manager - Glenn B. Dorning Inc.
sharpening it’s probably time to change the
blade, anyway.”
Cost of blades is always a consideration on any
top-drawer turf operation. Competitor blades can
run upwards of $180 a set. The smaller blades
engineered for Trimax mowers cost about $95 for
a complete set.
As mower blades age, engineers agree that
keeping blades in balance is a concern. Balancing
a 24-inch or a 36-inch blade on a traditional
mower can be an on-going project. It is far
tougher to balance a long blade than it is the
shorter ones used on Trimax mowers.
"Our blades give a good quality
of cut with a smaller blade,"
Prefume says.
Reel mowers are another challenge. While most
reel mowers will give a good result, they require
a lot of hours in the shop to maintain quality of
cut. A reel mower will pick up a lot of sand, for
example. Sand is very hard on a blade’s edge.
Each time the reel mower needs maintenance,
every one of the reel decks has to come off, be
touched up, and then remounted.
“I can sharpen a Trimax in 15 minutes,” Prefume
says. Sometimes, a manager needs to look
beyond the blade to prolong blade life and
maintain turf quality. A recent Trimax innovation
called QuikLift gives sod farms access to an
electronic system which will lift a mower deck off
the ground without the need to disengage the
tractor PTO. Along with sharp blades, QuikLift’s
features help increase efficiency and reduce
maintenance on both blades and the mower.
“Mowers, themselves, get torn up a lot,”
Laverty notes. For that reason, he suggests turf
farms, golf courses and sports venues focus on
maintenance of all the little things. Look after
jobs like replacing wheels and other mower parts.
Every time a mower clips the ground, the blade
takes a knock and the turf, itself, gets scalped.
Originally called Dorning Tractors, the company
grew to be known for its dependable parts
department and quick service. And, much as
any dealership appreciates the business, the
company would prefer its parts and equipment
customers get their money’s worth out of all of
the components they use.
This blends nicely with Trimax’s corporate
philosophy of offering turf managers equipment
with a low total cost of ownership and a long
commercial life.
"Whatever you do," Laverty pleads,
"don't use an aftermarket blade."
While he acknowledges that secondary market
blades might cost ten bucks less than an
original manufacturer’s blade, he says it is
a poor place to scrimp if your goal is tip-top
quality turf.
Laverty also sees some operations that lose
track of the kinds of blades they need for
their sod farm or golf course. There is a big
difference, he emphasizes, between a standard
blade, a mulching blade, and a high-lift blade
to collect grass. While all sorts of blades have a
function, he says an operation has to be sure to
choose the right blade for the intended use of
that mower.
Like that sharp-dressed man, a sharp-bladed
mower will be successful whether operating on
a sod farm, a golf fairway or an athletic field.
Trimax introduce their
widest Pegasus yet!
With a massive 24 ft cut width!
FROM PROTOTYPE TO LAUNCH
The Prototype Pegasus 24’ Mower
was showcased at the Turf Producers
International Conference in Tucson, Arizona
in February 2018.
For seventeen years the Trimax Pegasus has
set the standard in wide-area mowing around
the world and has become the benchmark for
the maintenance of parks, reserves, airports,
racetracks, sports fields and turf farms.
Released in the US market June 2018, the
Pegasus 24’ has the same outstanding
performance and cut qualities the current
Pegasus range is renowned for.
PEGASUS 24’ RAISES THE BAR
As the latest addition to the Trimax product
line, the Pegasus 24’ is going to reset wide area
mowing standards.
Mow efficiency will increase by 18% over that
of the Pegasus 20’ which has a mow width
of 20 feet. The mower also provides a useful
width alternative, meeting a current need of our
customers, for a mow width between the 20ft of
the Pegasus 610 and the colossal 34ft cut of the
Trimax X-WAM.
Owner and founder of Trimax, Bob Sievwright
says “The Pegasus 24’ is a great step between
our 20’ and the X-WAM without adding a large
amount of complexity and cost and customers
get the proven benefits of the Trimax Pegasus
chassis configuration which is tried, tested and
trusted.”
DESIGNED TO FUNCTION - AND IMPRESS
Having inherited the impressive body structure
and design cues for which Trimax is well known,
the Pegasus 24’ Prototype has become a showstopper.
After being unveiled at the TPI Field
Day the mower set off on a demo tour through
southern USA and it drew eager attention
from turf farmers and the general public alike.
Trimax design is always function-driven and
of the highest standard. The Pegasus 24’
is fully road-transportable and in transport
mode stands 12ft high. Where some mowers
become unstable at this height, the Pegasus
24’ is rock-solid and no design elements
have been left to chance or included as
afterthoughts.
MANUFACTURING EXPERIENCE COUNTS
Trimax’s extensive experience in
manufacturing industry-leading products
has taught them many things. For instance,
mower decks longer than 10ft find it hard
to follow ground contours and therefore
cannot maintain a quality cut. The decks on
the Pegasus 24’ have been kept at 9.5ft – a
dimension unique to Trimax - which ensures
even with a wider cut the mower retains
contour following ability.
Another problem besetting most wide area
mowers is the consistency of spindle height
and alignment across the decks which can
impact cutting accuracy. Trimax’s unique, and
protected spindle height setting technology
ensures spindle height is perfectly aligned across
the length of each deck providing the most
accurate and consistent cut in the market.
POPULAR FEATURES BUILT-IN
The Pegasus 24’ incorporates many of the
current range’s most popular features:
SteadFAST sealed, maintenance-free
spindles,
Trimax RapidSET height adjustment
system,
Trimax Lazerblade fling tip blades with the
unique “tilt-forward” blade design.
NEW IMPROVEMENTS ADDED
Pegasus 24’ features the new LocTEK Stubless
Roller Bearing Retention System. LocTEK’s
genius rests on the high tensile retention bolt
which eliminates lateral roller movement, vastly
increases bearing retention and strength and
ensures roller replacement and servicing is quick
and easy.
Golf Club of Houston
Brian Buckner is the Superintendent at the Golf
Club of Houston, a 36-hole course that plays host
to the annual Shell Houston Open.
Buckner looked to Trimax when they were finding
issues getting the whole course cut.
“It would take us 6-8 self contained units to mow
out about 27 holes a week, so we were always
missing about nine holes each week,” he says in
the video.
Since investing in two Snake units, Buckner can
get through all 36 holes with one person, saving
him labour costs and offering time to spend finetuning
other areas of the golf course.
Buckner also said the Snake’s quality cut is
versatile; working well on roughs and fairways,
and also it can be done in one pass of the mower.
Finally, and some would say most importantly,
he says the club’s members have noticed the
difference since bringing in the Snake.
“Membership notices that we’re paying a lot
more attention to detail out here, getting to
things that we never dreamed of getting to
before,” says Buckner.
Cory Phillips is the Equipment Manager for the
Golf Course of Georgia and Horseshoe Bend, he
spotted the Trimax Snake while at last year’s Golf
Industry Show and booked in a demo straight
away.
Phillips was impressed by the cutting quality, and
found as a rotary mower it performed well over
undulations, floated well and provided an even
cut.
As an equipment manager, Phillips explains in the
video his approach to sourcing new machinery is
to find its weak points, or what is going to be the
cause for maintenance down the track.
He says the Snake mower is strong, and requires
very little maintenance time.
“I’m always looking at a machine thinking what’s
going to break first?
Cory Phillips
Golf Course of Georgia
You don’t want a machine that you can walk up
to and see the weak link.
So I was looking at how strong the machine was
built, the thick metal that it was built out of and
I knew that it was going to spend very, very, very
little time in my shop,” Phillips says.
South Carolina’s Santee National Golf Club
also invested in a Trimax Snake after their
Superintendent Mike Holt saw one at a local sod
farm.
Holt says his course has two particular areas on
the course that are difficult to maintain, and
that the Snake took them on with no problems.
He says the durability, quality of engineering
and overall design of the mower are second
to none, and was also impressed with how
easy it was to adjust the cutting height on the
machine.
“I never really have been one to play with height
of cut much, it was always a set it and forget it
kind of thing, but the day after the mower was
delivered, I actually lowered it to three quarters
of an inch, and went out and mowed behind my
rotar cut unit. I could literally change it right
here in the field if I had to and not even go back
to the shop, it’s just simply amazing,” says Holt.
The resounding positives of the Trimax Snake
don’t stop at cutting quality; the video, which
can be found on the Trimax website, also shows
a collective appreciation for the mower’s even
distribution of clippings, short maintenance
schedule and greasing time, as well as how the
quietness of the machine doesn’t disrupt play
too much.
Breast Cancer Awareness and Turf
Mowers find Common Ground
Trimax Mowing System’s client Modern Turf
has made a clear statement in support of Breast
Cancer Awareness. The South Carolina company
confronted breast cancer head-on when one of their
own, Jennifer Haunert, wife of Modern Turf’s VP, BJ
Haunert, was diagnosed with the life-threatening
disease.
The staff and owners of Modern Turf rallied round
the Haunerts, giving their total support. Inspired by
Jennifer’s courage and positive attitude in combating
her breast cancer, the company branded one of
their Trimax Pegasus turf mowers with the National
Breast Cancer Foundation’s colors and logo. To help
boost the message carried by the mower, Trimax has
released a video of the project which can be viewed
on their YouTube Channel.
Branding the equipment in support of breast cancer
awareness was Maintenance Manager, David
Strickland’s idea. He was inspired by Jennifer’s
attitude to her diagnosis and subsequent treatment:
“It was impressive to see someone so up about
something that could be so bad.” “I felt like I should
do something to bring awareness to other people
and hopefully other people can have her same
upbeat attitude about it.” Jennifer was given the
all clear after five surgeries and was overwhelmed
when the newly reconditioned mower was unveiled
at the company’s Christmas party. She said it was an
honor to have a company that was willing to bring
awareness to breast cancer.
David went to great lengths to see everything
was done properly. The National Breast Cancer
Foundation was consulted to ensure the exact color
was used. With about 29,000 shades of pink to go
wrong with, the paint was professionally mixed to
guarantee accuracy. The result was perfect.
Breast Cancer is the leading cause of cancer related
death in women worldwide. Experts say greater
awareness and early detection is critical to the
survival of people diagnosed with breast cancer. If
more people knew about the disease, the death rate
could be reduced by about 30% - in real terms, over
400,000 lives could be saved every year.
The National Breast Cancer Foundation
(www.nbcf.org) is based in Texas, USA and operates
worldwide, promoting awareness and education.
Councils PreviousTriple-Deck Mower: 43 minutes | Trimax Pegasus: 23 minutes
Able to mow in wet conditions and with a cutting width of over 16 foot this Australian city council has reduced it’s
mowing time by 50% since replacing their old triple-deck mower with the Trimax Pegasus.
Filmed by a camera crew and a drone the Pegasus S4 was put to the test under stopwatch in Victoria Australia. The Mower
which is similar in width to the council’s previous mower came in at half the time, provided an improved cut quality and
charged on through the rain. With minimal grease points, minimal maintenance requirements and designed to have a low
total cost of ownership the Trimax Pegasus is the benchmark in wide area mowing!
Sam Neill’s 16yr old Warlord going strong!
Celebrating its 16th birthday last month Sam Neill’s Warlord had a brief cameo appearance on New Zealand TV
program Country Calendar.
The Warlord was one of only three made to a specified cut width of only 35” with a 2-belt drive. This one was sold
to New Zealand actor Sam Neill who owns the Warlord at his vineyard ‘Two Paddocks’ in Clyde, NZ, which has very
narrow rows and is steep and rocky. Trimax Production Manager Dave Presland said that during production he had to
take the parking stand-off it completely as it was so narrow that it could easily roll over when on the stand.
Most amazingly of all, the mower has never had a part, bolt or bearing changed on it in all that time, it’s still going
strong. The operators at the vineyard refer to it as “bulletproof!”
Collectively, LSA growers generate
around 75% of all Australian
domestic turf sales and annually
spend well over $200 million in
operational costs and input supply.
