Ramblers bounce back against Wolfpack
Neil Milbert
Freelance Reporter
Loyola Academy’s Jack
Fallon returned to action
on Friday, Sept. 21, for the
first time since injuring his
right shoulder in the season
opener and the senior quarterback
came through in the
clutch.
Fallon’s 10-yard pass to
Artie Collins in the left corner
of the end zone on the
first play of overtime enabled
the struggling Ramblers
to avert an upset and
escape from St. Ignatius
with a 21-14 victory.
“We had a run called,”
Fallon said. “But we got
the matchup we liked so we
went with it.”
The narrow conquest
came after the Ramblers (3-
2) lost two straight regular
season games for the first
time since 2006. St. Ignatius
(3-2) lost its second
in a row after opening the
season with three triumphs.
Entering the contest in
the second quarter with the
score tied 7-7, Fallon threw
a 12-yard touchdown pass
to Jared Lombardi 65 seconds
prior to halftime to
give the Ramblers the lead.
Setting up the touchdown
drive was a blocked
field goal attempt by St.
Ignatius that Jake Gonzalez
ran back to the Loyola 41.
During the drive Fallon ran
three times for 28 yards.
“Jack’s legs give us an
added dimension,” Loyola
head coach John Holecek.
“Matthew Schiltz (who
became the starting quarterback
after Fallon was
injured) is still important
to us and is a really good
quarterback.”
Schiltz hurled a 12-yard
pass to Rory Boos for the
Ramblers’ first touchdown
and Nate Van Zelst kicked
the first of his three extra
points to tie the score with
nine seconds elapsed in the
second quarter.
However, Schiltz had a
hard time scrambling for
yardage when his pass protection
broke down and after
he threw an interception
Holecek decided to call on
Fallon.
“I was ready to go tonight,”
Fallon said. “Before
the Brother Rice game (the
preceding week), I could
only throw short distances;
the farthest was about 20
yards. I iced the arm all
week and I felt good to go
on Monday.”
The game got off to an
electrifying start when Michael
Preston caught the
opening kickoff and lateraled
it to Campbell Callum
who shocked the Ramblers
by racing all the way down
the left sideline to the end
zone.
Joe Loftus kicked the
extra point and Loyola was
confronted with a 7-0 deficit
with 14 seconds elapsed.
After falling behind in
the second quarter, the
Wolfpack tied the score
14-14 with 4:18 to play in
the third quarter. Bill Brady
caught a pass from Richard
Ponce and battled his way
into the end zone on a play
covering 13 yards and Loftus
added the point after
touchdown.
On the Ramblers’ next
possession, Giorgio Arquilla
intercepted a pass by Fallon
and the Wolfpack took
possession at the Loyola
26.
The Wolfpack drove
to the 5-yard line but on
a first-and-goal situation
Conor Hough recovered
a fumble, squelching the
drive.
It was anybody’s game
for the rest of regulation
time. In the closing seconds
a St. Ignatius punt
was downed a half yard
from the goal line and the
Ramblers almost got nailed
in the end zone for a twopoint
safety that would
have cost them the game.
St. Ignatius won the
overtime coin toss and
elected to defend, which
was what Loyola would
have preferred to do.
It worked out for the best.
The ball was put on the St.
Ignatius 10-yard line and
Fallon immediately found
Collins in the end zone.
“I was having a tough
day,” Collins said. “I
dropped three.”
When St. Ignatius took
possession of the football
the Ramblers’ defense
came on strong, putting
the Wolfpack in a fourthand-15
situation. The
fourth down pass fell incomplete
but there was a
flag on the play. Loyola
was charged with pass interference
and the ball was
put on the Loyola 6.
Ponce again tried to
pass but this time he was
swarmed by defenders to
end the game and enable
the Ramblers to escape
from Fornelli Field with the
triumph that edged them
back above .500.
In Holecek’s opinion, it
was a not so great escape.
“We’re not very good,”
the Loyola coach said.
in the foot. With our
numbers we thought we’d
wear them down and we
didn’t at all.
“The positive was that
the kids never stopped
fighting. When it came
