Investigating Country/Place The importance today of a historical site of cultural or spiritual significance in the local area, and why it should be preserved (ACHASSK045) Year 2 – History Natural sites Elaboration Understanding that there are many sites, places and landscapes in Australia that are of significance to the identity of our nation Key questions • What is considered to be a natural site? • Why is it important to preserve natural sites? Display images of the places for students to view, and give them the opportunity to talk among themselves about each image. • View to find other places that are historical sites. Background information • There are a lot of places in Australia which have some heritage significance. They include natural, historic and Indigenous places. • The Australian Heritage Council assesses a site based on set criteria. These can be viewed at . • Australia has various protected sites on the World Heritage listing. There are many places on the national list because of their cultural and historical significance. Additional activity • Ask the students to make a brochure about their community. They should include any information on sites within the area.
