TIE The that binds the church & home together
From the Pastor
Dear Friends,
As many of you know, we have spent
the past few years thinking about the
future of our church. From the calling
of a new senior pastor and a new
associate pastor to the completion of a
visioning process and the beginning of
its implementation, we have been
listening carefully to the leading of God’s
Spirit and thinking about who we have
been called to be as a church. While
there have been discussions from time to
time about our location and whether we
would be better served by moving off
the corner of Washington and Piccadilly,
we have come to the conclusion that
there is still much to be done to build up
the kingdom of God here in downtown
Winchester. Our location gives us the
opportunity to be a integral part of our
community, serving others as we serve
our Lord.
As we have more firmly committed not
only to our location but to the work
God is now calling us to do, we have
begun to assess the needs of our
buildings both here on the corner of
Washington and Piccadilly and at
Hunting Ridge Retreat. Our upcoming
capital campaign will allow us not only
to make important repairs to our
facilities but also improve them,
equipping us to fulfill our mission more
fully in the years to come. Included in
our campaign will be an expansion of
our education building that will not only
provide new and important space for our
children’s ministries and our preschool,
but also help create another ministry hub
for our church as a whole. From
WATTS to Rise Against Hunger, from
fellowship meals to Bible studies, our
education building is an important site
for outreach to our church, our
community, and our world. We believe
that by Faithfully Building, we will be
able to continue the good work God has
given us through our worship, our work,
and our witness.
I hope that you will mark your calendars
with a few important dates:
Sunday, September 30 in the CEB:
Come learn about Hunting Ridge
Retreat’s ministries during the Sunday
school hour at 9:45 am.
Saturday, October 6 in the CEB: Come
learn about the history and future of our
Education Building by attending the
Men’s Bible Class Breakfast at 8:00 am.
Sunday, November 4: Please plan to
attend our one worship service that day
followed by a special luncheon and
Vision Event at Shenandoah University.
You will receive more information soon,
but we want you to go ahead and save
that date.
Sunday, November 18: Gather together
in both services as we commit ourselves
fully to the work of rebuilding, repairing,
and renewing our church.
I hope that you will join us in the work
ahead as we look forward to the future
of our ministries with expectation and
hope. We place our trust in God,
knowing that as he has started a good
work in us so many years ago, he will be
faithful to continue it in the years to
come.
God Bless You,
Pastor Kristin

Youth Ministry
FBC Student Ministry Values
In September our students started meeting again on Wednesday nights beginning with the churchwide fellowship
meal followed by games and Bible Study. During Bible study our students have been learning about our values as a
student ministry. These values help us to see youth group as:
-a place to be... friends
-a place to grow... in faith
-a place to serve... others
These values help direct our ministry and give guidance to all programming from fun events to mission projects.
So what do these values mean?
A Place to Be Friends
“I have called you friends…” John 15:15
In the Gospel of John, Jesus calls his disciples friends and he teaches them what true friendship look like. It
involves laying downs one's life for one's friends. For our student ministry this means time together is of the
highest importance. As we share in life and faith we learn how to support one another and help one another. We
believe that relationships are at the heart of youth ministry. Each event we do together—from retreats to
community meals, from games to mission projects—seeks to deepen friendships. We like to deepen friendship
through sharing experiences together. These include camping trips, hiking, pool parties, game nights, and more.
We seek to create an environment where each student can be who God created them to be within the context of
Christian friendship.
A Place to Grow in Faith
"...so that you may lead lives worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, as you bear fruit in every good work and as
you grow in the knowledge of God." Colossians 1:10
We hope that each student grows in faith and knowledge about God during their years in youth group. We
provide opportunities twice a week for students to grow in faith through gathering for Bible study and fellowship.
Youth Sunday morning Bible study features a large group gathering followed by smaller group time of middle and
high school groups. Our high school students are going through the ENTIRE Bible (it’s a long term study!).
Currently they are on the book of Acts. Our middle school covers various biblical topics and themes. On
Wednesday nights the whole group meets together for games, Bible study, and fellowship led by Pastor Kyle and
adult leaders. One Wednesday each month we do a mission/community service project (this is about putting our
growing faith into action).
A Place to Serve
"Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all." Mark 9:35
One of the primary ways we grow in the way of Jesus is by serving and loving our neighbors. Throughout the year
our youth do hands-on ministry in our church, community, and region.
In addition to Passport Missions Camp in Danville, VA, our students participate monthly in service to our local
community. This year we will continue by serving at Bright Futures. Bright Futures helps address food insecurity
within Winchester City Schools and Frederick County Public Schools. By serving at Bright Futures our students
are helping serve other students in the community. Our hope is that each student would develop a passion for
serving and loving others as Christ taught us.
kitchen, chalkboard, and a
variety of activities in that
corner for kids to enjoy on
Wednesday evenings and any
other times they are in the
fellowship hall.
Please consider decorating
Common Cents
IT ISN’T ALL ABOUT THE GIVING –
We often talk about how you should be giving to First Baptist and its programs.
But we forget sometimes to tell you what you get for your money’s worth.
In 2018, you helped fund a Special Children’s Worship on Sunday evenings where young children learn about
worship and prayer and Jesus in a setting designed to make them comfortable and at home in church.
In donating to Women on Mission, you help send thousands of prepared meals to those in need. Migrant
workers were welcomed into the area with gift bags.
Our youth enjoyed a spirit-filled week during Passport. While they paid a large share of the enrollment
fee, the church picked up the balance, making it more affordable for some youth.
Since 2004, you have supported a Spanish language mission – Primera Iglesia Bautista Peniel – as a
mission to our immigrant families.
Your donations have supported CCAP, Habitat for Humanity, ABBA, Faith in Action and WATTS.
First Baptist Church is a loving and caring church and with your donations and support, we can continue
to help those programs outside the grounds of FBC.
Thank you. Thank you. Thank You.
-Sharon Setzer, Financial Secretary
View from the Ridge
What a wonderful summer we had here at the Ridge. Summer time is a very busy time for us. When we reflect
back on summer and the countless inspiring memories, it reminds of what a blessing HRR is to FBC and to those
that come. This summer, HRR had the opportunity to host nearly 450 youth and adults.
Kicking off September was the Sunday Service at the Ridge. The weather was beautiful and the fellowship was
blessed. September also brought our 2nd Annual Pancake breakfast. It was wonderful to see so many faces from
the church. Our guests included neighbors of HRR and a family from the other side of Berryville. We will be
able to purchase about 30 chairs with the profits of the
Pancake Day. Thank you to all those that attended and a
special Thank you to those that volunteered their time to help
serve.
The Yard Sale has been rescheduled for September 28th and
29th due to the bad weather we were expecting. We are
planning to hold the sale indoors, so weather will not be a
factor. We have had a great response with donations and are
continuing to accept donations.
Please plan to join us on September 30th at 10 am in the
CEB for a Hunting Ridge presentation. Come and learn
more about your ministry and how HRR is making a
difference in the lives of all those that come. There will be
refreshments available. We look forward to seeing you.
A huge thank you to Greg Miller and Vulcan Materials for their
donation of the concrete needed to complete the last action item
on the new well project. That project is now 100%
complete. Thank you again to all who have helped in this long
process.
-Melissa Engler, Director of HRR
