Dedication and Innovation
Make Quality Cleaners Top Notch
By Dave Pasquantonio
Quality Cleaners, located at
969 Main Street in the heart of
Millis, has been a mainstay in
town for decades. Quay Vuong
bought the business in spring of
2017 and has grown to love the
community as much as the community
loves his service.
Drop-off is easy. When customers
bring in their clothes,
the team affixes a tiny bar-code
sticker to each garment in an
inconspicuous place. The team
tracks each item during its stay
and assembles it along with all of
the other items in the customer’s
order for pickup. Customers
even get an automated text letting
them know that their items
are ready. Technology is key at
Quality Cleaners.
After the drop-off, the team
sorts the garments. Those to
be dry cleaned go in one spot,
items to be hand washed go in
another, and so on. Even “bleeders”—usually
the pieces of clothing
that are red—are separated.
Rush jobs and items that can wait
a few extra days get their own
spots, too.
Quay and his team look to the
garment’s care tag for the initial
sort. “I don’t like to go rogue,”
he says. But sometimes consumers
remove the tags—or, as Quay
has found a few times, sometimes
the care tags are incorrect—and
that’s where experience kicks in.
Knowing how fabrics react to his
Quay Vuong takes pride in his business, Quality Cleaners, located in
Millis, and enjoys providing cutting-edge, detail-oriented service to a
community he has grown to love.
machines, his additives, and his
processes is another reason why
customers trust their items with
Quay and his team.
Dry cleaning isn’t done dry—
clothes are soaked in a solvent
instead of in water. It’s the best
way to get rid of oils, plus some
garments can be harmed by
cleaning them water. At Quality
Cleaners, the days of using
perchloroethylene—“perc”—for
dry cleaning are long gone. Instead,
Quay uses hydrocarbon,
a leading-edge additive that’s
safe, good for delicate items, and
excellent at removing oils and
stains. However, it also increases
the need for pre-spotting—treating
spots and stains before the
cleaning.
Quay has a dozen or so bottles
of pre-cleaning stain removal
formulations to treat even the
harshest of stains—we’re talking
things difficult stains like salad
oil, grease, and tar.
QUALITY
continued from page 3
“Take a coffee stain,” Quay
says. “There can be several components
in that one stain: coffee,
a sugar, a dairy product. Many
off-the-shelf spot removers can’t
handle those stains.”
Other items are wet cleaned—
washed in detergents, additives,
and specialized machinery. Still
others, most notably buttondown
shirts, are destined for the
laundry. And some garments
are washed individually by hand
with specialized additives and a
lot of care and time.
Some of the machines at
Quality Cleaners are among the
best in the business. Quay says
that his BÖWE M26 dry cleaner
machine is “the Rolls Royce of
dry cleaning machines,” and he
loves his Sankosha presses.
So, why bring your clothes
to a cleaner, when much of the
work could be done at home if
one has the time and the desire?
Take ironing. It’s a relatively
simple task—you haul out the
board, plug in the iron, select a
heat setting, and iron away. But it
can take forever, and some items
are too big to iron at home (plus
it’s really hard to get that snappy
pants crease like the dry cleaner
provides).
Instead of ironing at home,
one can take advantage of Quality
Cleaners’ experience, equipment,
and technique. They use a
press system with a slight vacuum
in the ironing board that keeps
the garment from moving. Quay
and his team know when to apply
steam, when to apply heat, and
when to let the garment cool
(that’s how they get that snappy
pants crease!)
Quay works constantly to
improve his business’s efficiency.
For example, existing customers
can drop off their items in about
thirty seconds, saving them a
few minutes with each visit. He
also took a hard look at all of the
store’s functions and relocated
some to decrease time spent
going from station to station.
He’s tweaked some of his formulations,
like enzyme ingesters,
to lessen the physical impact on
garments and extend their life.
Back to that question: why
bring your clothes to Quality
Cleaners?
Because they’re dedicated,
they innovate, they save you time,
and they can extend the life of
your garments. Plus, your clothes
will look way better than after
you do them yourself.
Quality Cleaners is open
Monday through Friday from 7
a.m. to 7 p.m., and on Saturdays
from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. They offer
free pickup and delivery and also
provide alterations. Give them
a call at (508) 376-9100, or visit
Dean College Presents:
Scapino!, October
25-28, 2018
The School of the Arts at Dean College will perform
Scapino!, beginning Thursday, October 25 through
Sunday, October 28, 2018.
Inspired by the French playwright Molière’s original
1671 play, Les Fourberies de Scapin, Frank Dunlop and
Jim Dale have heightened Molière’s comedy with slapstick
and burlesque, resulting in a story of the most engaging
nonsense. Set in contemporary Naples, Italy, two sons, two
daughters, and two fathers find themselves mixed up in the
crafty Scapino’s plot to solve romantic problems faced by
two of his friends. A fast-talking, quick-thinking scamp,
Scapino cleverly manipulates and cajoles everyone into
doing what he intends them to do.
The Dean College production of Scapino! will take place
in the Main Stage in the Campus Center at Dean College,
109 West Central Street, Franklin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday –
Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. General admission
is $22, Seniors $12 and Children $7.
First Universalist Society in Franklin Welcomes
Rev. Eric Cherry as New Minister
Beloved Rev. Carol Rosine, Minister Emeritus, Retires after 29 Years of Service
The First Universalist Society in
Franklin (FUSF), located at 262 Chestnut
Street in Franklin, recently welcomed
Reverend Eric Cherry as its
new permanent minister. Cherry is the
Director of the International Office of
the Unitarian Universalist Association,
and he brings 26 years of experience as
a youth minister, chaplain, teacher and
parish minister.
“My life and my vocation have been
indelibly shaped by Unitarian Universalism,”
says Rev. Cherry, who fills the
vacancy of the church’s beloved Reverend
Carol Rosine, Minister Emeritus,
who is retiring after 29 years of service.
“My earliest memories are of the embracing
kindness and caring guidance
provided by the UU Fellowship of Stony
Brook, in Long Island, NY, which was at
the center of my family’s life while I was
growing up. And, our religious tradition
has been the principled center of my
life through the years that have followed.
I regard this as a precious, unearned gift
- receiving it compels me to provide faithful
leadership that assures that many will
experience that gift as well.”
“The search committee was deeply
drawn to his passion for making church
relevant in this day and age and helping
each of us, and especially our youth,
find lives of purpose and meaning,” said
FUSF Search Committee chair
Vicki Coates. “Rev. Cherry brings a
unique combination of strong and
varied experiences as both a parish
minister and a Director of the International
Office at the Unitarian
Universalist Association.”
“Through my denominational
service, I’ve come to understand
the dynamics of ministry and the
capacity of supporting organizations
in new ways - both in the US
and abroad,” says Rev. Cherry. “I’ve
developed strength and deep experience
in administration, staff management,
and stewardship. And, I’ve
had the privilege to develop relationships
with global U/U and interfaith
leaders whose partnership expands
the strength and impact of our religious
commitments. I’m excited to
bring these experiences to my next
congregational ministry.”
Upon accepting FUSF’s offer to become
their next settled minister, Rev.
Cherry reiterated his call to:
• to create worship that changes lives
• to celebrate - in the broadest sense
of the word - so that the power of
joy and hope are continually present
• to care for the fearful, the lost and
the broken-hearted
• to invite attention to and thoroughly
support faith development for people
of all ages
• to faithfully confront systems of injustice
near and far
• to stewardship of the administrative
needs of a strong and growing faith
community
• to be fully present and welcoming
to the Town of Franklin and neighboring
communities as a strong, reliable,
center of religious strength.
The First Universalist Society in Franklin
is a growing congregation of nearly
235 members and friends. Its history in
the Franklin area dates to November 22,
1856. We are diverse in faith, ethnicity,
history, and spirituality, but aligned in
our desire to make a difference. We have
a track record of standing on the side of
love, justice, and peace.
This effort has been years in
the planning, beginning with
the Franklin Cultural District
Steering Committee, who were
tasked with gauging interest in
the project and starting the organizational
efforts necessary
to begin the application process.
The Steering Committee
met with potential partners, the
Massachusetts Cultural Council
(MCC), and Town of Franklin
administrators to determine the
needs, geographic area and types
of businesses to be included, and
the roles and responsibilities of
the District itself. A preliminary
site visit with the MCC and the
Town resulted in a decision to
move forward with the formal
cultural district application.
On June 28, 2017, the Franklin
Town Council passed Resolution
17-45, which endorsed
the FCD’s cultural district goals,
namely to “attract artists and
cultural enterprises; encourage
business and job development;
establish the district as a tourist
destination; preserve and reuse
historic buildings; enhance property
values; and foster local cultural
development.” The FCD
will be managed by a Townappointed
A Garden is Painted at St. John’s Church
Instead of being in their
Sept. 16.
It was their first official day
summer break, when an industrious
group of 18 got to work
and painted the tall concrete
wall that frames the church’s
flower garden. Previously, the
wall was a very plain grey concrete
Living Healthy
Cataract Surgery-The Laser Revolution Closer to Home
By Roger M. Kaldawy, M.D.,
Milford Franklin Eye Center
What is a cataract and
what is cataract surgery?
A cataract is a common condition
in which the normally clear
lens of the eye becomes progressively
cloudy. When light passes
through a clear lens, the light
can focus to a point, creating a
clear view. When light passes
through a cataract, the light gets
distorted, creating a blurred view.
Compared to vision with a clear
lens, your vision with a cataract
may look fuzzy, and colors might
be muted. These visual disturbances
from cataracts are progressive,
and when they become
bothersome or limit your daily
activities, it’s time to consider
treatment. Treatment for cataracts
involves surgery to remove
the cataract and replace it with
an intraocular lens implant. It is
the most common surgical procedure
in the US and around the
world and is considered to be
an extremely successful and safe
procedure.
What is laser cataract
surgery?
Many of the steps of cataract
surgery are traditionally performed
using handheld tools.
Now, they can be completed with
Flipside Gym
the precision of a laser. Using
the Catalys Precision Laser System,
your surgeon can offer you
unprecedented accuracy and
customization in your cataract
surgery procedure. Your surgeon
can use the laser to create
a circular openiang for accessing
and removing the cataract. Clinical
studies have shown that this
opening is more accurate when
performed with the laser than
what is achievable by hand. The
laser then softens and breaks up
the hard cataract into tiny pieces,
allowing for gentler, easier cataract
removal. Depending on your
pre-operative vision and desired
visual result, your surgeon may
recommend a tailored treatment
plan that could include creating
ultra-precise laser incisions
in the cornea and a specific lens
implant type (e.g. The Symfony
or Restor multifocal lens for near
and far vision). This tailored
treatment may reduce your need
for glasses or contact lenses after
surgery.
What are the benefits of
laser cataract surgery?
• A highly customized treatment
using advanced 3D
imaging
• A treatment with little or no
discomfort
Preschool * School Age * Team *High school
Dance/Gym Combo * Parties * Open Gym
Parents Night Out * Camps
• A more precise treatment
• A gentler and easier cataract
removal
• Generally, a more rapid visual
recovery due to reduced
inflammation
The opportunity to receive
tailored treatment with advanced
technology multi-focal lenses,
which may reduce the need for
glasses or contacts after surgery
Am I a suitable candidate
for laser cataract surgery?
In our experience, most cataract
patients are suitable patients
for laser cataract surgery. Your
doctor and his/her support staff
will discuss your candidacy in
more detail during your cataract
evaluation exam.
How long has the procedure
been performed?
Thousands of procedures
have been successfully performed
using the Catalys Precision Laser
System, and lasers have been
used in eye procedures for decades.
Catalys laser represents
the new standard in precision
laser cataract surgery and was
FDA cleared in 2011.
How does the laser work?
What is it doing to my
eye?
Every eye has a unique size
and shape. Prior to treatment,
the Catalys Precision Laser
System scans your eye making
a precise 3D map of relevant
structures. This process enables
your surgeon to create a highly
customized treatment plan that
is tailored for your eye. The
laser then focuses light to create
precise incisions exactly where
intended. The laser makes the
incisions in a matter of seconds.
You should experience little, if
any, discomfort.
What will I feel?
You can expect little or no discomfort
during your treatment.
During the laser portion, patients
describe seeing kaleidoscope of
lights and slight pressure only.
How long does the procedure
take?
You can expect to be at the
surgery center for 2 hours. You
will be in the procedure room for
10 to 12 minutes. The 3D imaging
and laser portion of the treatment
only takes a few minutes.
How is your center different
from other cataract
surgery centers?
Catalys laser cataract surgery
is all about better precision,
more safety and excellent outcomes.
Across the country, only
a small number of specialized
lasers are available and in use.
At Milford Franklin Eye Center,
Dr. Kaldawy was the first to offer
bladeless laser cataract surgery in
the area and among the first in
New England. We are proud to
bring this technology to the area.
The top 5 teaching hospitals in
the Nation offer bladeless laser
cataract surgery. We offer the
same. We use one of the 2 femtosecond
lasers currently used by
Mass Eye and Ear Infirmary –
the same laser used by the best
of the best. We perform the procedure
in a state-of-the-art center
in Milford and closer to home.
With this center available to you
here in your backyard, there is no
reason whatsoever to travel hours
to have cataract surgery. If your
eye provider is still recommending
you travel miles away to have
cataract surgery, we are available
for a second opinion! We implant
high quality premium lenses,
with correction for distance, near
and everything in between. With
the Symfony and Restor implants,
astigmatism is no longer
a problem. Our percentage of
complications and infections is
one of the lowest in the Nation
and is measured by independent
sources. 100% of the surgeries
are performed under topical anesthesia,
so only drops, no need
for shots and their risks and no
need for stitches. We are proud
to offer excellence in cataract surgery
with world class outcomes
and here is the great news: Here,
in Milford, and closer to home
than ever before!
Sports
Franklin Played Big Role in Copeland Landing Medway
Hoop Job
By KEN HAMWEY,
Staff Sports Writer
Eric Copeland’s roots run
deep in Medway but the 44-yearold
Franklin police detective,
who’s been selected as Medway
High’s new boys’ basketball
coach, will always remember the
significant role a pair of Franklin
High coaches played in sharpening
his technique and preparing
him for a head-coaching position.
Former Franklin High coach
Dean O’Connor and the Panthers’
current coach, CJ Neely,
both had Copeland on their
staffs, and for 12 years, he worked
as a freshman coach, a varsity assistant
and last year as the Panthers’
jayvee coach.
Copeland, who also has been
a freshman and jayvee coach at
Medway, hasn’t forgotten how
much O’Connor and Neely
influenced his philosophy and
coaching style.
“I learned a lot about preparation
and practice planning
from Dean,’’ Copeland said. “He
allowed me to give a lot of input
during practice planning stages
and would always explain what
he was thinking and what benefit
he expected the team to get from
it.’’
Copeland truly appreciated
the opportunity he got to coach
for Neely, whose last two seasons
ended with appearances in the
Division 1 state finals.
“CJ puts in an incredible
amount of time in preparation
for every aspect of the program,’’
Copeland noted. “His opponent
preparation is what I found to be
most impressive. The amount of
film review and live scouting was
certainly a huge part of our postseason
success last year. Both
Dean and CJ have a great ability
to connect on a personal level
with the kids they coach, not just
with the X’s and O’s.’’
Neely is quick to credit Medway
for hiring Copeland and is
very effusive in lauding the Mustangs’
new coach.
“Eric is one of the most dedicated,
loyal and passionate guys
I have ever worked with,’’ Neely
said. “He never shies away from
the hardest parts of the job and
has a unique way of connecting
with young people. He has high
expectations of his players, especially
in regard to their effort
and attitude.
He
has a way
of making
the game
fun while
helping kids
learn how to become
better people.
Medway got a great coach and is
fortunate to have a former Mustang
who lives in town and knows
what it takes to be successful at
Medway High and in the Tri
Valley League. I’m so happy for
Eric on this well-deserved selection.’’
Copeland played basketball
and soccer at Medway High,
graduated in 1992, then returned
to coach freshman and jayvee
basketball for the Mustangs after
earning his degree in criminal
justice at Western New England
College in Springfield. Married
and the father of three, he still
lives in town with his wife and
three children.
After 20 years of sub-varsity
coaching experience, Copeland
will succeed Jason Rojee, who
stepped down to devote more
time to his family.
Copeland coached the Medway
frosh squad for three years,
and he’s coached the jayvees on
two separate occasions. Taking
the reins of a varsity program
seems like a good fit for both
Copeland and Medway High.
When he last coached the jayvees
at Medway (2014-2017), his
teams experienced three winning
seasons, one of which was an undefeated
campaign.
“I’ve learned a lot from some
terrific coaches,’’ Copeland said.
“It’s not all about winning when
coaching freshmen and jayvees
— it’s about developing talent.
I strived to develop kids to be a
positive part of a program’s philosophy.
As a sub-varsity coach,
it’s important to get players to
buy into a team-first concept and
to build positive relationships.’’
Copeland has had some topnotch
mentors who sharpened
his coaching acumen. Besides
Neely and O’Connor, he worked
for Don Grimes and Rojee at
Medway and he played for Brett
New Medway Coach and 18-year Franklin Police Dept. veteran Eric
Copeland hasn’t coached a varsity game yet, but chances are good that
Medway High’s basketball program will continue to be formidable and
successful.
Bishop, his coach at Western
New England, whom he regards
as a plus.
“Copeland also has a solid
grip on other aspects that lead
to winning. “My goals are for
our program to be respected for
our work ethic and the type of
kids we have,’’ he said. “I also
want to build a strong relationship
with the youth program in
town. Competing for the Tri Valley
League Small Division title
is another objective along with
qualifying for the tourney.’’
Copeland’s teams will have a
specific on-court style that will
stress defense. “We’ll take pride
in our ability to defend,’’ he
emphasized. “I also like to fastbreak
and be up-tempo on offense.
We’ll attack the basket and
be sound in our shot selection.’’
Some of his strengths include
preparation, organization, employing
strategy and having a
sharp basketball IQ.
“My coaching philosophy
is about building positive relationships,
helping players reach
their potential and enjoying their
athletic experience,’’ Copeland
noted. “If those things occur,
then winning will follow.’’
When Copeland played at
Medway, he earned TVL all-star
honors as a senior in basketball,
and he competed as a midfielder
in soccer, playing on the 1991
state championship team. He
was a captain in both sports. At
Western New England College,
Copeland played four years of
varsity basketball, starting for
2½ years at point guard. He was
a captain twice for the Golden
Bears.
Copeland, who’s an 18-year
veteran of the Franklin Police
Department, was a leader then
and he’s ready to lead again —
this time as a varsity coach.
The Eric Copeland era gets
underway on Dec. 14 when the
Mustangs host Norwood.
And, it no doubt will mirror
some aspects of Franklin High’s
rich style and tradition.

Defense is Key to
Defending Tri County
Girls’ Soccer Title
By Christopher Tremblay,
Staff Sports Writer
Over the past four seasons,
the Tri County girls’ soccer team
has been able to qualify for the
Division 3 South Tournament,
putting together a 35-26-6 regular
season record. However, once
in the tournament, the Cougars
have not fared all that well, getting
knocked out in the first
round all four years by a combined
score of 21-4.
Last fall, Tri County lost
to Bristol Plymouth 5-3 in the
MIAA tournament after having
captured the Division 3 State Vocational
Championship for the
first time in Coach Mark Spillane’s
9-year tenure with TC. And
although TC now has the trophy
to acknowledge their championship
season, it wasn’t something
that the Coach was chasing, so to
speak.
“You’re always hoping to win
a championship, but at the beginning
of the season, I didn’t really
think we had a chance,” Spillane
said. “I knew that there was always
that slight chance, but there
were so many good teams in our
league, it would be difficult.”
Spillane’s mind changed when
his Cougars defeated Norfolk
Aggie in the first round of the
tournament, and at that point,
he knew the team’s chances were
good. As Tri County looks to defend
their Vocational Title this
fall, Spillane has a different outlook
than he had last season.
“We’ve only lost three seniors
from last year’s team, including
defender and league MVP
Amanda Merigo and Bella Leonardi,
who scored 49 goals for us,”
the coach said. “In addition to
our returners, we also have some
The outlook for Tri-County girls’ soccer has brightened since their Vocational Championship last year. Coach
Mark Spillane things the team brings strength this year.
young athletes coming in this
year who should help. If we play
as a team this year, we will be
good and once again have a shot
at the championship.”
Two important returners that
Spillane will look to guide this
year’s squad will be captains Jill
Plante and Alana Kessler. According
to the coach, Plante will
lead the offense this season, while
looking to fill the big shoes of
Leonardi and Kessler will be the
mainstay on defense. Kessler is a
true competitor and always gives
110% on the field and should
give the Cougars an advantage
with her speed.
In addition to the captains,
the Cougars have a strong junior
class and Spillane is looking for
these players to aid in the scoring.
The three biggest names will be
Emily Foley, a Mayflower League
All Star last fall as a defender and
Julia Hutchinson and Karoline
McNamara, both outside midfielders.
Although the juniors will be
looked upon to put the ball behind
the opposition’s keeper as
much as they can, Spillane knows
that they don’t need a lot of scoring
to win.
“Offense is not really needed
when defense is our number one
offense,” Spillane said. “The
girls do not allow the opposition
to get into our end all that much,
and when they do, we have
Chloe (Lynch, the team’s senior
goalie).”
Lynch is entering her third
year as the Cougars keeper, and
over that time she has been able
to keep Tri County in striking
range for just about everyone
games. The senior goalie always
gives her team a chance to win.
In front of Lynch, Spillane will
have Kessler, Foley and sophomore
Annie Yeaton, who will be
playing in her second year for the
Cougars.
Another senior who will have
a hand or a foot in helping the
team get back to the championship
game will be center midfielder
Emily Pion.
“Emily is the glue that keeps
us together,” the TC Coach
said. “She controls where we go,
whether it is to get back on defense
or attack offensively. Shew
is a true leader by example on the
field.”
Having lost in the MIAA
tournament in the first round on
numerous occasions Spillane had
put Whitinsville-Christian on
their schedule the past few year
to try and give team the experience
of playing higher division
teams.
With the makeup of this
year’s squad having the experience
of a making a run for a
championship Spillane is hoping
that the girls can once again find
themselves amongst the top of
the Mayflower League, which in
turn will give them the opportunity
to defend their State Vocational
Championship.

McGrath A Catalyst for Franklin High’s Volleyball Team
By KEN HAMWEY,
Staff Sports Writer
Lauren McGrath is the sparkplug
that drives the engine for
the Franklin High girls’ volleyball
team.
A four-year varsity player, the
5-foot-4 McGrath started as the
Panthers’ setter as a sophomore
and quickly made her mark. She
won the Hockomock League’s
Underclassman of the Year
Award as a sophomore, then
earned league all-star honors last
year. McGrath, who’s played club
volleyball for six years, not only
knows the intricacies of playing
setter, but she’s also adept at controlling
tempo and allowing her
hitters to excel.
“Lauren is versatile, confident
and has great court awareness,’’
said coach Kelsey Weymouth.
“She knows how to slow down
the tempo and when to speed
it up. She’s a captain who has
a dominant presence and she
works to make our hitters dominant.’’
The 17-year-old senior, who
also competes in indoor track in
the hurdles, long jump and high
jump, has a passion for volleyball,
and she’s extremely comfortable
playing a position that has its
share of pressure attached to it.
“I like setting because you’re
active, always touching the ball,’’
McGrath said. “To be effective a
setter has to lead, be enthusiastic,
focused and able to rely on good
skills and technique. Resiliency
is also a key because so often a
setter may make a poor pass or
use bad judgment. It’s important
to fix the play quickly by being
strong, positive and resilient.’’
McGrath has a variety of
strengths that include athleticism,
quickness and speed, a high volleyball
IQ, an aggressive style,
an instinctive nature and confidence
running an offense. But,
she’s acutely aware that her game
can always improve. “My serving
could be more consistent,’’ she
emphasized. “And, my sets could
be smoother. I work on those
areas a lot in practice.’’
McGrath’s desire to take her
game to a higher level coincides
with her goals for her final year.
She firmly believes the Panthers
can compete for the Sectional
title. So far, Franklin is off to a
good start, winning its first three
matches.
“Winning the Sectional championship
is realistic as long as we
stay sharp, positive and committed,’’
she emphasized. “We’ve got
nine seniors and our sophomores
and juniors are improved. We’re
talented and we’ve also got lots
of potential.’’
McGrath is bullish on Franklin’s
other senior captains —
middle hitter Maggie Doyle and
defensive specialist Shannon
Gray. She also admires senior libero
Riley Marino.
“Maggie knows the game,
is a strong hitter and has a very
high volleyball IQ,’’ she noted.
“Shannon is athletic, quick and
mentally tough. Both are good
leaders. Riley is very skilled,
tough and vocal.’’
Weymouth, who took the
coaching reins this year from
Kate Horsmann, is a fan of
McGrath’s leadership style. “I
like the way Lauren leads by example
and also by being vocal,’’
Weymouth said. “She’s supportive,
and she’s also willing to offer
help or advice. Lauren has been
a dominant asset in our 3-0 start.
She’s excelled in setting, but with
her on the attack, she takes advantage
of setting from the front
row when our opponent isn’t expecting
that. Her positive energy
lifts her teammates.’’
McGrath admits that she enjoys
getting her teammates into a
high-compete mode. “I like getting
our players hyped for our
games,’’ she offered. “I can be
loud, but that’s because I want
us to succeed. I always strive to
encourage and to be an effective
All Halloween
Décor are
25% OFF
communicator.’’
A good example of McGrath’s
ability to be a catalyst was evident
in games against Mansfield and
Bishop Feehan last year. But, her
efforts in the Panthers’ tourney
opener against Wachusett were
superb. After compiling a 15-5
record, Franklin entered tourney
play and squeaked out a 3-2 win
over Wachusett before bowing to
Hopkinton.
“I’d rate the Wachusett game
as my best,’’ McGrath said. “I
played an all-around game, and
my setting was strong. Our team
stayed motivated and focused. It
was a great team effort.’’
McGrath enjoyed competing
Lauren McGrath has a firm grip on competitive perspectives. The
all-star player and forceful captain is also a top-notch team player
who usually provides the spark that propels the Panthers’ volleyball
fortunes.
for Horsmann the last three years
and calls her “a coach who was
positive and a fine role model.’’
Weymouth also gets high marks
from McGrath. “I’ve been fortunate
to play for two excellent
coaches,’’ McGrath said. “Coach
Weymouth knows the game and
still plays it. She’s knowledgeable
and very motivating.’’
An honor student, McGrath
isn’t sure where she’ll attend college
but she plans on majoring
in either education or business.
Whether she’ll play volleyball at
the collegiate level remains in
doubt. “If I don’t play varsity
volleyball, I’d likely play at the
club level in college,’’ she said.
But, as she heads for the finish
line at Franklin High, McGrath
will continue to rely on a solid
competitive philosophy and also
keep learning valuable life lesson
from athletics.
“When I compete, I try to be
the best I can be and reach my
potential while still having fun,’’
she emphasized. “If I succeed
in those areas, then winning will
follow. Sports have helped me
to learn some great life lessons.
Leadership is one, and others
include being responsible and
accountable, being able to overcome
adversity, and to work as a
team and be unselfish.’’

We had the absolute pleasure
of working with Susan on the
sale of our home in Franklin and
the purchase of a new home in
the same town. She listed and
sold our home very quickly and
her professional experience and
guidance along the way made this a
smooth transition..
