A Word from the Chairman
Welcome to our final edition of Intouch
for the year. Since the last edition,
Police Bank has been hard at work
with Branch relocations and continuing
our work to fully integrate with the new
Bank of Heritage Isle.
In July, we wished farewell to Greg
McKenna after six years of service
on our Board of Directors. On behalf
Police Bank, I would like to thank Greg
McKenna, for his significant contributions. During his time
on the Board, Police Bank has grown and our service to
Members significantly evolved. Greg’s leadership advice and
support has been a significant contributor. Thanks again
Greg, you have left a meaningful legacy.
As we move into the tenth month of the year, we celebrate
our successes and the pace picks up, ensuring we kick off
2019 effectively. The 2018 Annual Report is being finalised
and will be available soon. It outlines some of the key
milestones, and projects that have helped shape another
solid financial year for the Bank.
Our Annual Conference and Awards Night was held in
July, this was the first time we welcomed our new Bank of
Heritage Isle team, the event recognised the efforts and
commitment of our team. We also participated in the Annual
Wear it Purple Day. The Police Bank team celebrated all
things Purple with cupcakes and treats in multiple locations
with the NSW Police Force across NSW. Needless to say,
the cupcakes were a hit. Find more information on this day,
and the footy tipping competition winners available on page 4.
Lastly, we are pleased to have relocated our Penrith Branch
to a new and improved premises (see page 3). This new
modern Branch illustrates Police Bank’s commitment to
servicing the Policing communities in this fast growing area
of Sydney.
I hope you enjoy reading our latest edition of Intouch.
Don’t put it off -
Write down your goals
If you write down your goals you’re likely to accomplish more
than those who don’t write down their goals. That’s one of the
conclusions from a 2016 study by Dr. Gail Matthews from the
Dominican University*.
Dr Matthews wanted to empirically prove what many of us
have heard in the past. Perhaps you heard it from a teacher,
personal coach or motivational speaker – “To be successful,
write down your goals!”
So if you thought it was an urban myth – think again.
What was the goals research about?
The research enlisted participants from around the world
including the United States, Belgium, England, India,
Australia and Japan. The participants worked in a variety of
jobs including educators, healthcare professionals, lawyers,
bankers, marketers and managers.
Each participant was randomly placed into one of five groups:
Group one was asked to simply think about the businessrelated
goals they hoped to achieve and rate each goal by:
• difficulty and importance
• the level of skills and resources they had to accomplish
the goal
• their commitment and motivation.
Group two and all the other groups were asked to write
down their goals and then rate them as per group one.
Group three was also asked to write actions for each goal.
Group four was asked to write actions and also share those
actions with a friend.
Group five did all of the above plus they wrote a weekly
progress report and shared it with a friend.
Types of goals
The types of goals people set covered areas such as
increasing their income, enhancing performance, enhancing
life balance and getting organised. For example, listing and
selling a house, hiring employees or completing a strategic
plan.
Unsurprisingly, Group five achieved significantly more than
all the other groups.
Group two - the people who simply wrote down their goals,
achieved significantly more than Group one who didn’t write
their goals.
And, Group four – the people who wrote action items and
shared their goals with a friend, achieved even more.
What does it mean?
Overall, the research showed that by simply writing down
your goals you are more likely to achieve them compared to
someone who doesn’t write them down. You are even more
likely to achieve them if you share them with someone – as
this makes you accountable to other people and encourages
you to achieve them.
Set your goals and seek advice
The way a Bridges financial planner can work with you is
strikingly similar. A Bridges financial planner can:
• help you write down and record your goals by looking
at your current financial situation and personal
circumstances to see what opportunities you have
• build a plan with action items and measurable steps to
keep you on track
• be there for you to share your progress and keep you
accountable to achieve them.
Financial advice makes a difference
Police Bank have chosen Bridges 2 as our preferred Financial
Planners. A Bridges financial planner can work with you to
develop a financial strategy for the year ahead that suits your
circumstances. To arrange a complimentary, obligation free
initial consultation near you call 131 728 or visit
www.policebank.com.au today.
A Bridges financial planner will develop a plan specifically for
you - one that’s tailored to your needs and circumstances, to
help you achieve your goals 2 .
* Research study by Dr. G Matthews, Dominican University,
California, 2016.
What were the outcomes?
At the end of four weeks, each participant rated their
progress towards achieving their goals.
Police Bank Celebrates
Wear It Purple Day - Friday 31 st August
Wear it Purple Day is about showing rainbow young people,
and everybody around us, that they have the right to be
proud of who they are! In 2018, Police Bank continues to
celebrate this day, encouraging diversity within the work
place and industry.
We wear purple to inspire and empower each other on this
day. Wearing purple celebrates and empowers the diversity
that surrounds each and every one of us; diversity in sex,
sexuality and gender identities, in perspectives, in values,
in everything!
This day was celebrated in our Head Office and in our
branches across ACT, NSW, and VIC with a morning tea,
cupcakes and most importantly, a great team of people
all wearing their purple polo shirts to show their support.
Our team engaged with local communities alongside the
NSW Police Force across mutliple destinations on the day,
showing our support and to the community and Members.
Police Bank is proud to promote inclusion, diversity and
acceptance amongst our colleagues and within the
community.
