What is Botox?<br />
Botox is 1 of 4 brand names for a concentrated extract of botulinum toxin.<br />
For the sake of not supporting any 1 particular company,<br />
I am henceforth going to use the abbreviation BTX.<br />
BTX was isolated from the bacteria Clostridium Botulinum in 1928, and<br />
in 1949, it was discovered that the toxin blocks neuromuscular transmission,<br />
by binding to the ends of the nerves supplying the muscles, and decreasing<br />
the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Because the chemical<br />
that is supposed to go from the nerve end to the muscle to tell it to move,<br />
is never released, the muscle does not move. Eventually, however,<br />
new neuromuscular junctions are formed, and the body breaks down<br />
the BTX so that the original neuromuscular junction can regenerate.<br />
This is why BTX injections have to be repeated every few months<br />
(no sooner than 3 months after the previous one is the recommended interval,<br />
to prevent resistance.)<br />
BTX’s paralysing action on muscles is what made botulism such a fatal illness,<br />
but it is also what gives it so many uses medically. In the right hands,<br />
it is a truly exciting tool. Injected directly into a muscle, the effect radiates<br />
only about a centimetre away from the injection point, which is why one muscle<br />
has to have several points of injection. But it also means that only an extremely<br />
tiny amount has to be used, and the effect is very local, with few medications<br />
interactions or effects outside of the area of injection.<br />
There is ongoing research into even more ways BTX can be used to help people.<br />
Although most of the injecting I do is for people who want to look more relaxed,<br />
happier and younger, I am even more excited about having this wonderful<br />
tool available for medical purposes.<br />
