Halliford School
Life in the Sixth Form
A Different Environment
The Sixth Form is a very different environment from the rest
of the school. For the overwhelming majority of Hallifordians
it forms the most memorable, enjoyable and influential part
of their school careers. The relationship between staff and
pupils changes and becomes more adult and relaxed. There
is much greater freedom of choice with the emphasis on the
Sixth Formers making their own decisions and learning to
make responsible use of their new-found freedoms. There is
no uniform, only a simple dress code which allows individuals
to express themselves. There are private study periods which
it is up to the Sixth Formers to use wisely. The teaching
groups are much smaller and Sixth Formers study only those
subjects that they have chosen. There is a wide-ranging extracurricular
programme as well as the chance to learn to exercise
responsibility and leadership. Indeed, the Sixth Form play a
major role in the running of the school and in setting the tone
by providing role models for younger students.
In recognition of these academic and social demands you have
your own purpose built centre in which to study and relax. You
are also allowed to sign out of school to go into Shepperton
when you do not have other commitments. The emphasis is
on recognising your increasing maturity and preparation for
university.
New Entrants
Entrants to the Sixth Form from outside Halliford are made very
welcome by staff and students alike. The Sixth Form is of a size
that nobody can get lost and all can receive whatever individual
help and support is needed, whether from particular teachers,
your tutor or the Head of Sixth Form. Anyone considering entry
to the Sixth Form who is not currently at Halliford should contact
the Registrar. She will arrange a visit, including a tour of the
school and a meeting with the Headmaster. Entry is based on the
results of an interview, a report from your current school and a
minimum of five GCSEs at Grade 5 including Mathematics and
English Language. Higher grades will usually be expected in the
subjects to be taken at A Level.
Reasons for Staying at Halliford
The decision to stay at Halliford or go to pastures new is a very
important one and needs careful thought. The most important
reasons for staying on are as follows:
•
The staff at Halliford already know you well and how best
to support you.
• State of the art Sixth Form facilities.
•
There is no break or disruption in the continuity
of your education.
• Excellent leadership opportunities
•
•
There is high quality teaching in small classes.
An unusual degree of extra help and support
is available outside the timetable.
•
There is a wide-ranging programme of activities
beyond the classroom.
•
There is a well proven system of careers
and university advice.
•
Your university reference is written by people who know
you well. It is no surprise, that those who stay generally get
better results than those who leave.
