Editor’s Letter
A few days ago, Nigeria marked its 58th year anniversary,
with nothing to celebrate. The dreams, aspirations and potential
that rend the air, when the Queen bade her farewell, leaves a
sour taste in the mouth of even some of us, who were not born
then.
We are like a people, who entered one chance with the
crop of leaders the system props up to rule over us, and do
not know how to jump off the dangerously careening vehicle.
We are stuck, it would seem, with politicians who have a
penchant for ‘dipping their hands in the cookie jar’(apologies,
Jimi Disu)
No sector is spared the parlous state of infrastructure in
the country. What did we do with the proceeds from our Black
Gold? How did we manage to remain so incredibly backward?
But, more importantly for us, in Allure, what role did women
play in the development or lack of it in Nigeria?
Who better to shine the torch, than Senator Florence Ita-
Giwa; one of the few leading lights in Nigerian politics. One,
who was not ‘put in’ the position, but got there by fighting
squarely, and owning her victory. Read her reveal on ‘Women
in Politics’. PP8-10.
This special edition is dedicated to women and how they
have evolved in the five decades since independence. See the
Gender issue, an incisive article written by Gwen, who simply
wants to be referred to as Gwendolyn A. Talk about branding.
Finally, our fashion pages take a look at five decades of
fashion and its evolution. For everyone born in
the sixties, you would experience a feeling
of dejavu; those were the best days in
the life of this country. Right now, we
hold in our hands the ashes of burntout
possibilities.
NB: Glad to be back. Must thank
Jemi Ekunkunbor who held forth, and
the rest of the team, who supported her.
Have a good one!
