Glenview police are investigating
former Loyola
Academy teacher Matthew
Laird for “alleged
internet crimes against
children,” according to an
email sent to the school’s
alumni on Oct. 2.
The Glenview Police
Department notified
school administrators on
Sept. 19 that Laird, who
taught English at the
school from 2011 to 2014,
is the subject of a criminal
investigation, according
to the email from Loyola
Academy President Patrick
McGrath and Principal
Charles Heintz.
“As a precaution, we
want to let you know
about this open investigation
and that Loyola
is cooperating with law
enforcement,” McGrath
and Heintz wrote in the
email. “We will keep you
updated as is appropriate.
It is important to note that,
at this time, Mr. Laird has
not been charged with any
crime.”
Glenview Police Commander
David Sostak confirmed
the ongoing investigation
Oct. 3 in a short
statement to reporters. No
arrest has been made as
of press time on Monday,
Oct. 8.
Laird also served as a
scholastic bowl moderator
at Loyola Academy from
2004 to 2008 and from
2010 to 2014, the administrators
said. He was the
principal co-founder of
Aegis Questions, a question-writing
company that
operated between 2005
and 2009, according to a
Laird placed on
administrative leave at
North Shore Academy
Laird was in his second
year teaching at North
Shore Academy in Highland
Park until Sept. 18,
when Glenview police
notified the Northern Suburban
Special Education
District of their ongoing
criminal investigation, Superintendent
Kurt Schneider
said in a statement on
Oct. 3.
The district immediately
placed Laird on administrative
leave after the notification,
Schneider said.
Laird is no longer listed on
the school’s online staff directory.
NSSED administrators
will recommend Laird be
fired at the district’s Oct.
10 leadership council
meeting because he did
not cooperate with the district’s
internal investigation
into the allegations,
Schneider said.
In the statement, the superintendent
said students
at North Shore Academy
elementary and middle
schools are unlikely to
have had direct contact
with Laird during their
time in the district.
“Currently, there is
no information suggesting
that any NSSED students
are involved in this
