And then there is Pure Metal’s most recent accolade: the
2007 AGA Excellence Award for Civic Contribution for its
donation-in-kind to the University of Western Ontario.
Under the direction of Engineering Professor Michael Bartlett,
Pure Metal Galvanizing galvanized a $7-million outdoor
“laboratory” that will measure the force of high winds on a typical,
two-storey house. Known as The Insurance Research Lab
for Better Homes, the house is “cocooned” by a galvanized steel
framework. With partial funding from federal and provincial
sources and the Insurance Bureau of Canada, “private sources
had to be found to complete it,” Dr. Bartlett says.
“Members of the steel industry donated the metal framework,
and Pure Metal gave us an invaluable contribution by
galvanizing all of the exposed beams, catwalks and supports
for free,” Dr. Bartlett says.
Thirty years from now, Bruce, Doug and Jeff Phillips hope to
see more family members like Chris and James deeply involved
in the business when it celebrates 100 years of galvanizing the
world’s steel products.
“We’ve already begun that succession planning,” says the
president. “Placing our customers and co-workers at the top of
the ‘respect’ pedestal will always be the most important aspect
of Pure Metal’s future success.”

Galvanizing at a Glance
hot-dip galvanizing, using molten zinc to protect steel
from corrosion, dates back more than 170 years.
Galvanizer’s kettles are set at temperatures ranging
between 435 to 454 Celsius. in most modern operations,
these kettles are kept at temperature around
the clock.
When the Brooklyn Bridge was built between 1870
and 1883, over 14,500 miles of hot-dip galvanized
wire were used for its four main cables. When the
bridge underwent massive rehabilitation more than
100 years later, the hot-dip galvanized wire was in
excellent condition.
