Niles West Sectional
For the first time in four
years, New Trier qualified
all four entries into
the state tournament after
it swept the top two spots
in both the singles and
doubles competition at the
Niles West Sectional Friday-Saturday,
Oct. 12-13,
in Skokie.
After playing doubles
last year, Ali Benedetto
returned to singles and
promptly won the No. 1
singles spot, defeating
teammate Emma Bhote
6-1, 6-3. Macy Zaban and
Ashtin Hara won the doubles
competition by defeating
teammates Emily
Dale and Lily Bhote 6-2,
6-4. The Trevians easily
won the team title at the
sectional as well.
Loyola’s doubles team
of Lizzie Witkowski and
Catherine Power also qualified
for state after finishing
in third place.
Vernon Hills Sectional
Defending Class 1A
state champion North
Shore Country Day School
also won its sectional and
qualified three of its four
and Vivian Miller easily
finished 1-2 in the singles
bracket, beating all of their
opponents 6-0, 6-0 until
of excuses and they had
not all year. They weren’t
going to let this turn into
an excuse and were going
to go out and play our
best.”
The Ramblers went out
on the course on Saturday
and shot a 16-over-par,
finishing in fifth place,
seven strokes behind state
champion Hinsdale Central,
which won its seventh
state title in a row.
“Coming back the next
day after that was hard,”
Radler said. “You want
to do the same thing you
did the day before, but
you know it’s going to
be tougher to do what
you just did. Golf is so
hard because you’re
standing around, thinking
for a long time but
you have to get that out of
your mind.”
Other scorers for the
Ramblers included Jack
Crawshaw (75, 18th
place), Christopher Lee
(78) and Ryan Savarie
(79).
New Trier, which will
return the top five scorers
from this year’s state
team, also qualified for the
team competition of the
state finals and finished in
ninth, shooting a +24. Junior
Daniel Tanaka led the
way in ninth place with
a 73. Sophomore Charlie
Creamean (75, 18th) and
juniors Brian Joseph (80)
and Sam Weber (84) also
scored for the Trevians.
North Shore Country
Day didn’t have as great
of an experience in the
Raiders’ first trip downstate
as a team since 2014.
The Raiders finished
in eighth place, led by
Eli Sherman, who hit an
Girls golf
The 2018 girls golf season
marked the end of one
of the best careers in New
Trier girls golf history.
Defending state champion
Penelope Tir helped lead
the Trevians downstate
yet again as the Trevians
were looking to defend
their state crown and Tir
her own.
Unfortunately, neither
came to fruition, as Tir
finished her magnificent
career in fourth place,
shooting a +3 over the
two-day tournament and
the Trevians finishing in
fourth after shooting a
combined +51. Despite
the fourth-place finish,
Tir became the first New
Trier girls golfer to medal
in each of her four years
of high school golf.
“A fantastic career ends
with a unbelievable senior
year,” New Trier coach
Scott Fricke said. “Four
years in a row in the top
10 in the state. Penni is
one of the best we’ve even
seen here at NT.”
Like the boys, the girls
state title had its own bout
of crazy weather but was
able to get both rounds
of play in. Fellow senior
Lizzie Kenter was also a
top-20 finisher, tying for
19th place with a two-day
total of 155.
“Our team battled hard
through the tough conditions,”
Fricke said. “We
were able to play our best
golf of the year at the
state tournament. Hard to
believe we can count a
74,75, 79,79 and not take
at least 3rd place. That
shows you how good girls
golf has gotten.”
Loyola also qualified as
a team and finished two
spots behind New Trier
in the standings, finishing
in sixth place with a +59.
The sixth-place finish was
the highest since 2015,
when the Ramblers took
second in state.
Leading the way for
Loyola in 13th place was
Lilly Gentzkow, who shot
a two-day 152, just two
strokes out of a top-10 finish.
Junior Mary Boesen
tied for 27th after shooting
a 159.
North Shore Country
Day made some history
of its own, as it qualified a
golfer, Caroline Gray, for
the first time in the program’s
two-year history.
The sophomore impressed
as well, finishing tied
for 25th after shooting a
165.
