After playing doubles<br />

last year, Ali Benedetto<br />

returned to singles and<br />

promptly won the No. 1<br />

singles spot, defeating<br />

teammate Emma Bhote<br />

6-1, 6-3. Macy Zaban and<br />

Ashtin Hara won the doubles<br />

competition by defeating<br />

teammates Emily<br />

Dale and Lily Bhote 6-2,<br />

6-4. The Trevians easily<br />

The Ramblers went out<br />

on the course on Saturday<br />

and shot a 16-over-par,<br />

finishing in fifth place,<br />

seven strokes behind state<br />

champion Hinsdale Central,<br />

which won its seventh<br />

state title in a row.<br />

“Coming back the next<br />

day after that was hard,”<br />

Radler said. “You want<br />

to do the same thing you<br />

did the day before, but<br />

you know it’s going to<br />

be tougher to do what<br />

you just did. Golf is so<br />

hard because you’re<br />

standing around, thinking<br />

for a long time but<br />

you have to get that out of<br />

your mind.”<br />

Other scorers for the<br />

Ramblers included Jack<br />

Crawshaw (75, 18th<br />

place), Christopher Lee<br />

(78) and Ryan Savarie<br />

(79).<br />

New Trier, which will<br />

return the top five scorers<br />

from this year’s state<br />

team, also qualified for the<br />

team competition of the<br />

state finals and finished in<br />

ninth, shooting a +24. Junior<br />

Daniel Tanaka led the<br />

way in ninth place with<br />

a 73. Sophomore Charlie<br />

Creamean (75, 18th) and<br />

juniors Brian Joseph (80)<br />

and Sam Weber (84) also<br />

scored for the Trevians.<br />

North Shore Country<br />

Day didn’t have as great<br />

of an experience in the<br />

Raiders’ first trip downstate<br />

as a team since 2014.<br />

The Raiders finished<br />

in eighth place, led by<br />

Eli Sherman, who hit an<br />

84.<br />

Girls golf<br />

The 2018 girls golf season<br />

marked the end of one<br />

of the best careers in New<br />

Trier girls golf history.<br />

Defending state champion<br />

Penelope Tir helped lead<br />

the Trevians downstate<br />

yet again as the Trevians<br />

were looking to defend<br />

their state crown and Tir<br />

her own.<br />

Unfortunately, neither<br />

came to fruition, as Tir<br />

finished her magnificent<br />

career in fourth place,<br />

shooting a +3 over the<br />

two-day tournament and<br />

the Trevians finishing in<br />

fourth after shooting a<br />

combined +51. Despite<br />

the fourth-place finish,<br />

Tir became the first New<br />

Trier girls golfer to medal<br />

in each of her four years<br />

of high school golf.<br />

“A fantastic career ends<br />

with a unbelievable senior<br />

year,” New Trier coach<br />

Scott Fricke said. “Four<br />

years in a row in the top<br />

10 in the state. Penni is<br />

one of the best we’ve even<br />

seen here at NT.”<br />

Like the boys, the girls<br />

state title had its own bout<br />

of crazy weather but was<br />

able to get both rounds<br />

of play in. Fellow senior<br />

Lizzie Kenter was also a<br />

top-20 finisher, tying for<br />

19th place with a two-day<br />

total of 155.<br />

“Our team battled hard<br />

through the tough conditions,”<br />

Fricke said. “We<br />

were able to play our best<br />

golf of the year at the<br />

state tournament. Hard to<br />

believe we can count a<br />

74,75, 79,79 and not take<br />

at least 3rd place. That<br />

shows you how good girls<br />

golf has gotten.”<br />

Loyola also qualified as<br />

a team and finished two<br />

spots behind New Trier<br />

in the standings, finishing<br />

in sixth place with a +59.<br />

The sixth-place finish was<br />

the highest since 2015,<br />

when the Ramblers took<br />

second in state.<br />

Leading the way for<br />

Loyola in 13th place was<br />

Lilly Gentzkow, who shot<br />

a two-day 152, just two<br />

strokes out of a top-10 finish.<br />

Junior Mary Boesen<br />

tied for 27th after shooting<br />

a 159.<br />

North Shore Country<br />

Day made some history<br />

of its own, as it qualified a<br />

golfer, Caroline Gray, for<br />

the first time in the program’s<br />

two-year history.<br />

The sophomore impressed<br />

as well, finishing tied<br />

for 25th after shooting a<br />

165.
