Living Things CREATURE FEATURES IN DIFFERENT PLACES Lesson 2 Teacher Notes Science Inquiry Focus: Where do animals live and what external features do they have that help them survive? Skills Development/Working Scientifically: • Questioning and predicting • Observing • Investigating and experimenting • Analysing • Recording and communicating Science Learning Outcome: • Make observations about the habitats animals live in and how their body parts help them survive in that environment. Technology/Engineering/Mathematics Links: • Participating in and using online interactive tools. • Using technology to conduct research. Background Information • Living things make a home in various environments, called their habitat. Plants and animals are specific to their environments because they are best suited for survival in those conditions. • The basic needs of living things include air, water and food. Animals’ needs also include shelter. Different animals have different needs; for example, a badger needs leaves and grass to create a sett. • The external features (body parts) of animals help them survive in their environment. Different animals have different body parts, but some may be the same. Their body parts serve a purpose; for example, a giraffe’s long neck allows it to graze on leaves at the tops of trees which other animals cannot reach. Assessment Focus: • Use the resource sheets on pages 9 to 12 as a formative assessment of the pupil’s understanding of the concept that animals live in places and have certain body parts to help them survive. • Observe the pupil’s ability to research information using technology.
