Sinharaja Awareness Workshop
2018

Introduction
World University Service as the leading welfare organization in
University of Moratuwa has been actively involved in environmental
conservation projects and related activities for a considerable period of
more than 31 years.
We are proud to state for the past 31 years, we have been able to
produce fine citizens for the country through this Sinharaja awareness
workshop including leaders, managers, engineers, architects who take
vital decisions in this country at present. The main purpose of this
program is to enhance the bond between university students and nature
so that one day they will take ecofriendly decisions leading to
maximum possible environmental conservation. Therefore we are
looking forward to carry out this program for the 32 nd time with the
aim of producing people who are passionate with the natural
environment.

World University Service
World University Service is a voluntary non-government organization
of students and staff which runs in the universities in Africa, Asia,
Europe and the America.
WUS University of Moratuwa branch was established in 1980 to
promote the objective “student welfare and social responsibility
through learning” of WUS international within the university where
every student of the university is counted as a member of WUS.
WUS University of Moratuwa branch can be considered as the key
welfare and service provider within the university premises providing
essential facilities to the student population and the staff. Such as;
● Bookshop
● Photocopy centers
● Communication centers
● Saloon
WUS Bookshop acts as the main stationery supplier in the university
while photocopy centers, saloon and the communication Centre
providing some other essential services to the university community.
Some other projects that WUS get involved during the past years is
Tsunami Housing Project, which was carried out in aid of a university
student who lost his house due to the Tsunami disaster 2004. With the
tremendous support of WUS Germany we have been able to make this
project a success.

Annual Sinharaja Awareness Workshop
Sinharaja awareness workshop is one of the major annual events carried out
by the WUS which will be a five days program held within the Sinharaja
Rain Forest Reserve with the participation of 25 students including all the
departments such as Engineering, Architecture, Information technology and
Business studies to expose the natural environment to increase their
awareness on ecological issues.
1. Introductory Lecture -
This lecture will be conducted by Prof. Kotagama, senior lecturer Department
of Zoology, University of Colombo with the participation of university
students from all three departments in order to give the idea behind this
workshop including its structure and objectives.
2. Preliminary Workshop
As the number of participants is restricted to 25, they will be selected
through a preliminary workshop held at the university premises. The basis of
this selection program would be the level of performance of the students at
this pre-workshop which will be illustrated by a report submitted at the end of
the day. Activities in the pre-workshop involve observation of birds,
butterflies and a number of analytical studies concerning flora and ecostructure.

3. Sinharaja Workshop
The selected 25 students will be then participated for a five days residential
workshop held within the Sinharaja Rain Forest Reserve. Prof. S.W
Kotagama a Professor of Environmental Science, acts as the key resource
person for this program. While Dr. Nirmali de Silva, senior lecturer Faculty
of Engineering, University of Moratuwa also plays a major role as the
President of WUS. This program will be conducted with the assistance of
about ten resource personnel who will be highly recognized leading
environmentalists of Sri Lanka with expertise in number of environmental
subjects.
It will consists of following activities;
Flora: Identification of tree, plant structure, differences between Primary and
Secondary forests and study of different plant species with special importance
to pitcher plants and its scientific composition would be the main section of
the study.
Fauna: Studying the behavior of birds, especially Blue Magpie (Endemic to
Sri Lanka) and bird flocks of Sinharaja; butterflies, reptiles, amphibians, and
mammals will be included. Statistical survey of leeches will also take place.
These exercises are met with great enthusiasm of the participants.
Discussions and clarifications: Give the opportunity for the students to
clarify their doubts and enhance their knowledge at the discussion table held
every evening.
Special lectures: some interesting lectures will be conducted by Prof. Sarath
Kotagama and many other specialists on topics such as Identification
methods of birds, Bird flocks, Lichens, Sustainability designs, Nature and
wildlife photograghy and its habitat and behavior.

4. Award Ceremony
At the end of the workshop, each student is expected to submit a report based
on his/her personal experience and the knowledge gained through the
exercises. Prizes will be given for the first best three reports based on their
analytical knowledge and notion for the future. As well as a certificate for the
students as an appreciation for the participation.
