World Food Day observed<br />

DHAKA : The World Food Day was observed in the country and elsewhere across the world<br />

yesterday in a befitting manner through organizing various programes.<br />

The theme of the day was 'Work paves the way for future, work to build a hunger free world<br />

by 2030.'<br />

The observance of the day globally was aimed at increased action to achieve Zero Hunger<br />

by 2030 set by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and 130<br />

other countries across the world.<br />

President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina gave separate messages wishing<br />

the success of the day's programmes.<br />

In a message, the President called upon all including scientists and extension workers to<br />

pay their attention to inventing stress tolerant crop varieties, technology and extension<br />

suitable to adopt with climate change.<br />

He suggested that a safe food zone be built through strengthening the rural agriculture<br />

dependent economy by taking into consideration the gradual increase of population and the<br />

consequence of climate change.<br />

The Prime Minister in her message put emphasis on nutrition security. "We have already<br />

ensured the food security through achieving food autarky …so now we have to engage our<br />

efforts in ensuring nutrition," she said.<br />

The Agriculture Ministry organized a seminar and a three-day fair on the occasion. Besides,<br />

a 3-day food fair began at Krishibid Institution Bangladesh (KIB) to mark the day.<br />

Man killed in Kushtia road<br />

KUSHTIA : A young man was killed as a tractor overturned on Kushtia-Meherpur road at<br />

Taltola in Mirpur upazila on Tuesday morning, reports UNB.<br />

The deceased was identified as Saddam Hossain, 30, son of Jannat Hossain.<br />

Witness said the tractor overturned on the road around 9:30 am after the driver lost his<br />

control over the wheel for reckless driving, leaving Saddam and its driver critically injured.<br />

The injured were rushed to Kushtia General Hospital where the duty doctors declared<br />

Saddam dead.<br />

Female UP member<br />

dies as sharee gets<br />

tangled with wheel<br />

SYLHET : A female union parishad member of Osmaninagar<br />

upazila was killed on Monday evening as her sharee got<br />

tangled with the wheel of motorcycle on Tajpur-Balaganj<br />

road in Mollapara area, reports UNB.<br />

The deceased was identified as Shipra Rani Dutta, 40, wife<br />

of Mohon Lala Dutta of Basia village in Usmanpur union and<br />

also a UP member of reserved 7,8,9 no wards.<br />

Quoting the witnesses, assistant sub-inspector Rumi<br />

Akhter of Osmaninagar Police Station said Shipra's sharee<br />

got tangled with the wheel while she was returning home<br />

riding on a motorcycle around 5 pm.<br />

Later, she fell down from the bike and sustained critical<br />

injuries, police said.<br />

The injured was rushed to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical<br />

College where she succumbed to her injuries in the evening.<br />

Beheaded body found in Barguna<br />

BARGUNA : Police recovered the beheaded body of an<br />

unidentified young man from Kismat Koruna village in<br />

Betagi upazila on Monday night, reports UNB.<br />

Locals spotted the body in the village at night and informed<br />

police, said Md Kamruzzaman, officer-in-charge of Betagi<br />

Police Station. Later, police recovered the body around <strong>10</strong><br />

pm and sent it to Barguna Hospital morgue for an autopsy.<br />

Export-import thru Benapole<br />

BENAPOLE : Export and import activities between<br />

Bangladesh and India through Benapole land port will<br />

remain suspend for four days from Tuesday on the occasion<br />

of Durga Puja, the largest religious festival of Hindu<br />

community, reports UNB.<br />

Kartik Chakrabarty, general secretary of Petrapole C&F<br />

Agent Staff Welfare Association, said trade between the two<br />

neighboring countries will remain halted for four days on the<br />

occasion of Durga Puja. The business will resume on October<br />
