Think you have your make-up mantra all crafted up
your sleeve? It may seem that way but a little blooper
here and there in the way of leaky eyeliner or a shiny
T-zone can ruin everything. Here are nine ways in
which your beauty regimen can go awry (and be
solved, too)
1. overdoing the face powder
Yes, the step of using a face powder is a must. But
while it can appear to smoothen out lines and pores,
applying too much of it will make you look too pale.
2. Foundation, first
Do not skip the foundation. Apply it first, and
follow it up with the concealer. Foundation can either
leave the skin looking glowy and refreshed or patchy,
like you have a mask on. So, use these tricks. First
select a shade that matches your complexion. Add a
little on your palm and apply at the center of the face.
Blend it outwards in a gentle motion with a damp
sponge. It should look even on the face.
3. Contrasting concealer
Always use a concealer that matches your face
type. Rule is: when using it under the eye, select a
shade that's just a shade lighter
than your own skin tone. For the cheeks and rest of
the face, use a concealer colour that matches the
colour of the foundation that you will be using. Do
not go too light or you will risk sporting white, patchy
circles. Also, if you have an oily skin, use a matte
finish concealer and if you have dry skin, opt for a
slightly shiny-finish look.
4. Making the blush stand out
Blush can make or break the whole look, and far
too often, women overdo the blush powder. Yes, it
can highlight contours, but just let it define the face
gently. Too much rose or pink shaded blush will look
clownish.
5. leaking kohl
Eye make-up is a must, but do not go too heavy as
ArieS
(March 21 - April 20): Natives
of Aries are often confident and
energetic people, who should
consider setting up arrangements for larger
family gatherings like reunions. Natives of this
sign are often driving forces in the professional
and political areas.
tAUrUS
(April 21 - May 21): The
obstacles you face at the
moment may be daunting but
you have what it takes to overcome them.
Don't try to avoid what fate sends your way
over the next few days - it is designed to
strengthen you, not destroy you.
GeMini
(May 22 - June 21): There may
be times when you would like
nothing better than to cut
yourself off from the world at
large but that simply isn't possible. Make
the best job of what you are expected to do
and try to steal a few hours for yourself
later on.
CAnCer
(June 22 - July 23): Some
things are important and some
things are not and if you don't
yet know the difference then it's time you
found out. This should be a productive time
for you but you need to learn how to say
"no" when people ask you for favours.
leo
(July 24 - Aug. 23): If you are
not yet getting the rewards and
the respect you deserve don't
worry, in a matter of days your
name will be on everybody's lips. The sun in
Aries makes you both creative and
adventurous, so do something out of the
ordinary.
VirGo
(Aug. 24 - Sept. 23): You may be
tempted to go on a journey today
but the planets warn it could
lead you in some unforeseen directions, so
make sure you take a map and don't promise
to be at a certain place at a specific time -
because you won't make it.
there is a risk of it appearing to 'leak'. A kohl liner that
comes out of the corners of the eyes can make you
look like a watercolour. So, either opt for waterproof
eye make-up or apply a layer of compact powder over
the eye before applying eyeliner, which allows the oils
secreted by the skin to be absorbed by the powder.
6. lip trouble
A seemingly simple task of dabbing on lipstick
actually has a method to it! You can start off with
using a lip liner before applying your lip colour for a
fuller lip appearance (this is a part that most busy
women avoid). Rule is: rich, dark-toned hues flatter
thicker lips and lighter shades work better with
narrower lips. Also, nude shades are not meant to be
worn at any time. Restrict them to a daytime look,
only.
7. the right lighting
When you are applying make-up, be sure to do so
in the right lighting. Natural lighting works best for
skin.
8. Battleground t-zone
Does your nose shine out in pictures, whether you
are sweating or not? Credit that to the oily T-zone
that can prevent the make-up from looking even.
This area around the bridge of the nose tends to
glisten. Use a mattifying primer to control the oil and
shine in the area and even out the skin's texture.
Then blend in the foundation.
9. Don't stop at the jawline
A common mistake that people make is just blend
the make-up till the jawline. But experts advocate
going all the way till the neck as that is visible, too.
Blend the make-up downwards so that the face
matches the neck area. You cannot have one shade
on your face and paler or darker look in contrast on
the neck.
liBrA
(Sept. 24 - Oct. 23): At some
stage over the next few days
you will see or hear something
that makes you view the world in a new
light. A change of perspective will lead to
new ways of thinking, ways that answer all
the questions you have been asking.
SCorpio
(Oct. 24 - Nov. 22): Find out
why a partner or loved one is
behaving so erratically, then
do what you can to assist them. Most likely
their problems are nowhere near as big as
they think they are and can quite easily be
corrected - as can your own!
SAGittAriUS
(Nov. 23 - Dec. 21): Yours is a
sign of boundless selfconfidence
and that's good
because you will need it over
the next few days. If you are not happy in
your current environment don't be afraid to
pack a bag and take off for a few days.
CApriCorn
(Dec. 22 - Jan. 20): You seem to
lack purpose at the moment but
that will change if you look for
ways to express yourself.
Whatever challenges come your way, and there
will be plenty, see them as opportunities to be
embraced rather than as threats to be avoided.
AQUAriUS
(Jan. 21 - Feb. 19): Stay calm and
keep setbacks in perspective. If
you can learn to take yourself a bit
less seriously over the coming
week then your problems, such as
they are, will fade into insignificance. Rest
assured your successes will always outnumber
your failures.
piSCeS
(Feb. 20 - Mar. 20): It does not
matter if other people approve
of what you are doing, it
matters only that it means
something to you. The very last thing you
should be doing now is asking friends and
family for their opinions - it's your views
that count.
Skin SinS
If you are a beauty warrior, you must be
investing in some tried-and-tested products
and a few home remedies. You may also be
browsing websites doling out free DIY
skincare advice. So far, so good. But if you lap
up all the popular remedies doing the rounds
on WhatsApp, your skin may just bear the
brunt of half-baked advice. To differentiate
the good from the bad, here are some popular
skincare issues - demystified by experts.
exfoliation is for everyone
False. If you are going OTT with your
exfoliation routine, think again. This skincare
regimen is not needed every day or even weekly.
In fact, with the advent of products containing
newer ingredients the overall need for
exfoliation has reduced. Mumbai-based
dermatologist Dr Batul Patel mentions that
ingredients like monolaurin, present in night
creams and cleansers, treats excess sebum
without over drying the skin. Alpha hydroxy
acids (AHAs) act as chemical exfoliants which
help to loosen and remove dead skin cells.
"Using these products will in effect reduce the
need for exfoliating; in case you still do feel the
need, then twice a month is adequate," she says.
Those with sensitive skin, should, especially be
careful. People suffering from active acne and
rosacea should avoid grainy exfoliators, as they
can further complicate the issue.
top tip : "Use cleansers with thermal
spring water or micellar water for sensitive
skin - both remove trapped debris without
drying," adds Patel.
Advanced skincare products have effective
the right way to
shampoo your hair
The right way to shampoo your hair can make a lot of difference.
It may seem like one of the easiest steps in the morning, but doing
it right can do wonders to your hair. Here are five rules you must
follow while shampooing your hair.
Choose the right shampoo
Pick a right shampoo for your hair type. If you're confused on what
shampoo you should buy, you can consult a hair stylist or trichologist.
And, instead of buying a 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner combo, buy a
separate shampoo and conditioner bottle for better results.
Wet your hair properly
One mistake a lot of us make is not wetting hair properly. Before
applying the product, you must wet your hair under the shower for
about 2-3 minutes, so your hair is completely wet. This will help
absorb the product better.
Apply it at the right place
When shampooing, focus more on the scalp area, where the roots
are and not the hair ends. And, when you are using a conditioner,
lather it on the hair ends and not the roots.
ingredients that reduce the need for
exfoliation. - Dr Batul Patel, dermatologist
Facial facts
If you love your monthly facials at your
neighbourhood salon, then it's time to take a
hard look at its hygiene. Bengaluru-based
dermatologist Dr Shuba Dharmana suggests
watching out for basics: "The staff's uniform
should be neat, their hair tied in a neat bun
and should not be falling all over you. They
must wear gloves or use sanitiser before
touching your skin."
Overall, the place should look clean minus
clumps of hair and dirt sitting around
everywhere. Check with the staff if the combs
and other equipment are clean and sterilised.
You have the right to ask these questions as a
consumer - because you are paying for a
SHOWTIME
rinse properly
Once you have applied the shampoo, don't rinse it immediately.
Let the shampoo be on your hair for at least 2-3 minutes, so it can
work properly. Also, use cold water, instead of hot water. Cold water
will help to seal the hair cuticles, which will prevent further damage.
Don't wash your hair every day
Washing your hair every day can end up damaging your hair more
than you think. Try to limit your washes to 3-4 times a week. If you
feel your hair is greasy, you can use a dry shampoo in between.
