THE POWER TO DELIVER THE LARGEST FLIES. 

Muskies and other Predators are often looking for a meal that pushes the 

limits of what a fly angler can feasibly cast, and targeting these fish with flies 

often takes Model hours or days of casting between opportunities. Fatigue 

can mean not having the fly in the water when your fish is ready to eat, or 

not being physically prepared to execute a hook-set at the critical moment. 

The Exocett Predator rod is specifically designed to meet these demands. 

Increased length of 9‘ 4“ facilitates longer overhead casts and keeps the fly 

deeper on the retrieve. A powerful rod tip easily lifts wet flies from the water 

and supports loop shape while casting the largest flies behind 350-500 

grain sinking and ultra- compact floating lines. The grip is an elongated full 

wells with a generous rubberized composite reinforcement on the higher 

impact upper grip. A large flare full wells and elongated fighting butt

Fishing in the surf presents some unique opportunities and challenges for the fly angler. Wind and waves make

Durability 

The coatings on Monic Fly Lines do not contain the volatile chemicals that must be added to PVC in 

order to create a typical fly line. This shift in technology is important to maintain the durability of the 

line. Previously, these added chemicals would constantly leach out into the environment. For the same 

reason we stay away from PVC water bottles, food containers or baby toys, PVC emits poison. As those 

chemicals migrate out of the plastic, a void is created in the compound. Not only does this alter the 

compound from its initial, intended characteristics, but that void forces the compound to crack over time. 

This is where the circumferential cracks on a PVC fly line are born. Add dirt, oil, and other foreign debris 

to the cracks and performance degrades. Monic Fly Lines do not lose material over time, and therefore 

do not crack. This is important in the overall durability of the line and its performance longevity for the 

angler.

THE START 

Manuel stands at the tailout 

of an amazing pool that 

shimmers with a multitude of 

blue and green variations on 

the Soca river. He repeatedly 

chucks out his streamer. The 

sunn is high, it´s warm out, and 

his surroundings resemble leftovers 

distributed from the Caribbean 

flyts and dumped into 

this New Zealnd - like rainforest. 

From time to time Manuel 

feels some slight grabs, but nothing 

serious. 

´Lets go the next spot,“ the 

others shout over to him. 

Manuel starts to reel in his line 

and nearly gets his rod ripped 

out of his hand. He must be 

careful not to lose the fish to 

one of the many rocks in the 

roaring river. By the time the 

fish is in the net, he sees it is 

a marble - a massive marble - 

but with the shape of a bream! 

Maunuel suddenly feels himself 

pulled forward with a force 

he cannot explain. It becomes 

stronger and stronger - intil he 

wakes up, the servere braking 

on the highway we are driving 

on jostling him from his dream. 

I can tell you, marble fever 

is a servere issue and it can hit 

you hard. 

Back to reality. We are three guys from nothern Germany. Usually we fly fish slow-moving 

trout streams, lakes and the Baltic coast for sea run brown trout. But at least one or 

two times per year, a trip to Alps is required. 

Is is in the Alps where one can experience what we feel is the essence of fly fishing: a 

breath-taking enironment with high altitude lakes, rivers running as wild, clean and cold 

as ever, each holding wild beautiful salmonides in them. And among the many amazing 

fishing areas in the Alps, one has a special appeal for us: Soca valley in Slovenia, with its 

emerald streams and endemic fish.

THE SPOT 

Honestly, the description described in 

Manuels dream as being Caribbean flyts 

embedded in a New Zealand rainforest 

is absolutly true. The Julian Alps, as 

they are called, is a mountain range that 

mainly consists of limestone - the rocks, 

the riverbed and the gravel banks-which 

varies from bright yellow to pure white 

color. The spring-fed streams are GIN 

GLEAR and the limestone lends a range 

of blue green shades to the water. As the 

region is close to the Adriatic Sea, which 

makes for a dense, seemingly mythical 

forest embellished with ferns and 

lichens. 

THE FISH 

the fish are far from normal. The area a battlefield in both 

World Wars - shows scars here and there. The once starving 

residents used the rivers as their food source, but their fishing 

with and grenades soon produced emty rivers. 

As Europe found peace, the rivers were restocked and the result 

is found now in the chub, barbel, brown trout, rainbow 

trout, Adriatic grayling and the precious, endemic, marble 

trout that speckle waters. 

Unfortunately, the introduced brown trout and marles mix 

and produce hybrids, although their variations produce some 

of the prettiedt fish aou can find. The rainbows are self-reproducing 

and can grow to remarkable sizes, resulting in a true 

sportfish. 

But for us, the real deal is the pure-strain marble. A Amrble 

trout might be compared to bull trout, given its big head, large 

jaws, long and slender body, large dorsel fins and snakelike 

swimming motion. They are, quite simply, pure predators, 

but with a weakness for dries from time to time. 

They are hard to fool, easy to spook and due to their camo 

colorings - they move like ghosts trought the river waters.

THE COUNTRY 

Slvenia is a spcial county, even if you are not there for the fishing. It grants a eclectic mix of Slavic, Alpine and Italian Mediterranean 

influences. The laid back people populate the small histroic and ols stonehouse towns that produce some of the 

best coffee, cheeses, ham, spritis and pizza. 

THE REALITY 

Well so much for the facts, but this 

year we had a bit of bad luck. Our trip, 

scheduled for mid September, normally 

prodvides good dry fly fishing and 

pleasant weather. But But for us, not 

this year. 

It didn´t rain a lot for the whole season, 

so it was way too dry, But salvation 

came with the three of us, because we 

brought the pleasant north German 

rain with us to Slovenia. What shall 

I say ? We were a bit disouraged. The 

rain was massive and it wasn´t scheduled 

to stop for the next four days. The 

rivers were raging and after 1.200km 

ride, we were too! 

Luckily, we still had our joker, a good friend, Matthias 

Esslinger, who two years ago had found his center life 

in this area. Being a keen fly fisherman himself and 

knowing the rivers like only few others can.. 

We met Matthias right away and started one of the 

most essential procedures in fly fishing: drinking coffee. 

We made our plans, and the rest is (unfortunately) 

already history. We had a physically demanding week, 

being wet and miserable, finding single rays of sunshine, 

enjoying overwhelming happiness catch our fish 

and consuming the best burgers humans have ever 

built, but most of all great companinship. 

Overall marble fever isn’t too bad. It makes me think of amazing 

experiences when battling an everyday life, so no medication 

neede. It is also more an addiction than a disease. 

And you know what they say about addictions: 

It is only an addiction, when you’re trying to stop!

PLANNING AND WEEKS OF DEPRIVATION TO SOME OF THE MOST OUTSTANDING 

MOMENTS YOU WILL EVER EXPERIENCE. AND THE BEST THING ABOUT IT: 

YOU DON´T NEED TO BE RICH. 

THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS ARE STAMINA AND A PASSION FOR THE ADVENTURE.

IT´S COMPLETELY DARK 

2 in the morning and we are hauling 

our backpacks and fishing rods over a 

remote, trackless saddle in the middle 

of nowhere. Dense rainforest is surrounding 

us, giving us the feeling of 

walking through a bucket of glue. Every 

couple of meters my legs disappear in 

rotten wood. And often steep cliffs or 

giant fallen trees are forcing us to take 

another route. It´s exhausting, sometimes 

frustrating and it will take us 

another hour to cover the last kilometre 

back to our camp. But it´s well worth the 

effort. We are tramping through some 

of the most amazing landscapes we 

have ever seen, in search of large trout, 

seldomly visited by other anglers. 

THIS COUNTRY 

is probably one of the best destinations to 

venture, if you are planning a backcountry 

trip on your own. There is nothing out 

there that could harm you (snakes, bears 

etc.) - except your own dumbness- , the 

fishing license is cheap and you will find 

an excellent infrastructure for trampers, 

including good tracks and cosy backcountry 

huts. And the most important thing: 

There is a vast number of excellent trout 

fishing streams. Even if you would spend 

your whole life fishing there, you wouldn´t 

be able to cover all the water. 

During our four weeks trip in January 

2018 we fished high country spring 

creeks in Canterbury, remote rivers in Fiordland 

and the Kahurangi National Park 

and a couple of streams in the Nelson 

region. All of them are crystal clear, offering 

the opportunity to sight fish for large 

trout.

THE SMALLEST CREEK 

we fished in Canterbury, had a flow rate of just two cumecs per second. It is a tiny tributary of a bigger river system, where 

salmon climb up every year to spawn. As we were walking along the first section of the creek, we didn´t expect a single 

fish in it, because it was so small. But after a couple of meters we sighted a nice brown trout. And... it was slurping nymphs 

just from below the surface. Unbelievable! Patrick approached the fish very carefully from below, tossing a pheasant tail in 

size 16 on a 18 feet leader in front of the fish. After the third cast the fish swung to the side and inhaled the fly. It was on... 

and fighting as hell, stripping of nearly the whole flyline with the first run. After ten minutes, the fish was carefully towed 

to the net. And it was -a lot- bigger than we thought, probably around 8lb. What a nice kick-off. After another hour we had 

spotted six fish of a similar size -unfortunately spooked most of them- and landed another nice brown with 5lb. A fishing 

day, we will never forget. 

But it didn´t come always this easy. Imagine, standing 

in the wilderness -three walking days away from 

civilisation- and spotting a big double figure brown 

sipping off dry flies from the surface just below your 

feet. We had this sort of situation a couple of times in 

the Kahurangi National Park. Even when approaching 

the pool crawling in slow motion and casting, just 

when the fish was looking away from us. Even with 

super long 7x tippets, presenting the dry fly 18 feet 

in front of the cruising fish, we were simply not able 

to catch them. It felt like fishing for trout, smarter 

than ourselves. But even if we didn´t catch them, 

observing those fascinating creatures was something

they will see you, before you see them 

and seek for a shelter. But sometimes 

they are feeding frenzy. I remember one 

week in Fiordland, were the rainbows 

attacked nearly every dry fly, we were 

presenting. None of these fish was below 

4lb ,some of them were stripping 

off the line to the backing with the first 

run and some others jumped four feet 

out of the water. It was probably the best 

fishing week we had in our lives and we 

didn´t encounter another fishermen in 

that area. 

THE TRIP 

wasn´t only memorable in terms of fishing. Experiencing extreme tranquillity -without any man made noise-, viewing the 

stars -undisturbed by any other source of light- and being totally free -away from any other human being- is something you 

have to experience, in order to be able to understand. The food tastes better than in any five star restaurant -even though 

it is freeze dried-, you smell and see a lot more -because your senses are not flooded- and you start to realise what life is 

about. It´s not about your status in society, nor about houses or fancy cars - 

IT´S ABOUT ENJOYING EVERY SINGLE MOMENT.

DAS BLAUE WUNDER 

Beim Anflug auf das Archipel verfliegt jeder Zweifel über die Maschine. Der 

Anblick auf die unzähligen Inseln und Flats, welche umhüllt von türkisem 

Wasser unter uns liegen, lassen jedes Fliegenfischerherz höher schlagen. 

Nach einem kurzen Spaziergang über sandige Wege durch das 1500 Seelendorf 

beziehen wir unsere Posada (Gasthaus). Ein einfaches aber gemütliches 

Zuhause für die nächsten 12 Tage. Für Eike und Manuel sowie für mich ist 

es der erste Trip in tropische Breitengrade, nur Matthias hat die Insel vor ein 

paar Jahren schon einmal inspiziert und uns zum Glück dieses Mal mitgenommen. 

Durch seine Vorkenntnisse und komplette Organisation der Reise, 

konnten wir noch am ersten Tag bei einer kleinen gemütlichen Session am 

Abend unsere ersten Bonefische überlisten. 

GEISTERJAGD 

Ein kleines Aufblitzen, ein schneller Schatten oder nervöses 

Wasser sind die kleinen Indikatoren um die fast unsichtbar 

errscheinenden Geister der Flats zu fangen. Matthias hatte 

unseren Trip bis ins Detail geplant und organisiert. Nun war es 

an der Zeit seiner Planung Taten folgen zu lassen und dies war 

unser Job. Unsere Guides haben uns bereits am Vorabend auf 

ein kleines Meet & Greet besucht. 

Der erste Tag unseres Guidings begann mit einer kurzen aber 

ruppigen Bootsfahrt. Wir passieren ein paar mit Mangroven 

bewachsene Inseln ehe wir uns endlich einem Flat nähern 

und im knöcheltiefen Wasser aussteigen. Für mich war es 

eine extreme Umstellung meine Augen, welche darauf eingestellt sind nach steigenden Forellen und Äschen an der 

Oberfläche ausschau zu halten, an die Fischerei im Salzwasser anzupassen. Es bedarf etwas Zeit um in dieser völlig 

neuen Umgebung seine Ziele anstreben zu können. Mit etwas Hilfe und vielen Richtungsanweisungen von meinem 

Guide sowie von Matthias konnte ich meinen ersten Bonefish sehen und ihn glücklicherweise davon überzeugen meine 

Fliege zu nehmen. Im weiteren Verlauf des Tages haben wir einige Bonefische gefangen aber um einiges mehr gesehen 

und gespookt. Auch auf dem zweiten Boot, auf dem sich Eike und Manuel befanden wurden die ersten Fänge gemacht. 

Neben unzähligen Bonefische in großen Schulen oder auch einzeln crui- senden, wird man den ganzen Tag von Rochen 

begleitet. Auch Schildkröten sind keine Seltenheit und immer beeindruckend anzusehen. 

Als wir uns auf den Weg machen, um uns 

zum Mittagessen zu treffen, wird mir die 

Größe des Archipels zum ersten Mal wirklich 

bewusst. Unser Kapitän steuert das 

Boot in Richtung Horizont, vorbei an Flats 

so groß wie mehrere Fußballfelder, Inseln 

umrandet von weißen Stränden mit meterhoch 

gestapelten Muschelformationen 

und von Pelikanen bewohnten Mangroven. 

Wie aus dem nichts taucht eine kleine 

Insel auf, auf der eine kleine Fischerhütte 

zu erkennen ist. Es ist ein wirklich fabelhafter 

Ort um eine kleine Pause zu machen, 

um sich mit seinen Freunden bei einem 

kühlen Bier und ein paar hausgemachten 

Empanadas auszutauschen ehe man zur 

zweiten Hälfte startet.In den ersten beiden 

Tagen konnten wir einige Bonefische 

fangen, was zum einen sicher an der Hilfe 

der Guides lag, zum anderen aber auch an 

Los Roques selbst.

DIE ZÜGE DER MEERE 

Korallen knirschen und knacken unter 

meinen Füßen. Bei jedem Schritt spüre 

ich wie die scharfkantigen, abgestorbenen 

Teile versuchen sich in meine Flats 

Boots zu bohren. Wellen prallen auf das 

Riff und erzeugen mit tosendem Wind 

und starker Strömung ein raues Terrain. 

Nein, wir haben es nicht mehr auf 

Bonefische abgesehen, heute widmen 

wir uns uns ganz den Papagei- und Triggerfischen. Es ist atemberaubend 

die meist leuchtend grün und braun gezeichneten Fische im flachen 

Wasser zu beobachten. Weit ragen die in stattlicher Größe vorhandenen 

Papageifische mit ihren Schwanz- und Rückenflossen aus dem 

Wasser. Zusammen mit einigen Artgenossen bilden sie Schulen von bis 

zu 20 Exemplaren. Es ist eine sehr technische und ebenso fesselnde Fischerei. 

Nachdem ich nach mehreren Anläufen nur gebrochene Haken 

und einen Verlust an den scharfkantigen Korallen verzeichnen kann, 

beginne ich mich zu fragen, wie es möglich sein soll diese Giganten in 

diesem Terrain zu dominieren. Doch ein Blick nach links gibt mir direkt 

die Antwort auf meine Frage. 

Manuel drillt einen starken Papageifisch und scheint 

die Oberhand zu haben. Der wirklich skurril aussehende 

Fisch kämpft mit seiner ganzen Kraft und ähnelt dabei 

eher einer Dampflock als einem Bewohner des Meeres. 

Glückli- cherweise gelingt es Manuel ihn geschickt um die 

vielen Hindernisse zu leiten und nach wenigen Minu- ten 

in den Händen zu halten. Was für ein faszinierender Riffbewohner! 

Zu unserer Überraschung handelt es sich um 

einen wunderschön blau gezeichneten Papagei, welcher 

sich unter seinen grünbraunen Artgenossen versteckte. 

Nach diesem Fang war Manuel „ON FIRE“ und konnte sich 

einen seiner größten Träume erfüllen. Ein paar hundert 

Meter weiter sahen wir erneut einen der zahlreichen 

Triggerfische. Schwarze große Flossen durchbrechen die 

Wasseroberfläche und scheinen Manuel zu zuwinken. 

Wir können uns etwas hinter eine Steinformation verstecken 

und den Trigger aus kurzer Distanz beobachten.Mr. ON FIRE 

präsentiert seine Fliege ein paar mal vor dem Maul des Fisches doch 

die starke Strömung macht es ihm nicht leicht den Kontakt zu Fliege zu 

halten. 

Beim nächsten Wurf scheint alles perfekt zu sein, der Strip Strike sitzt 

und der Kampf beginnt. Seine Flucht zieht ihn in Richtung Flat und 

nicht in Richtung der scharfen Korallen, in denen er vermutlich den 

Kampf ziemlich schnell für sich entscheiden könnte. Ich konnte sehen 

wie die Anspannung in Manuels Gesicht von ihm abfiel als ich den 

grauen, grimmig blickenden Triggerfisch sicher greifen konnte. Ich 

bin mir sicher wir werden diesen Tag nie ver- gessen und noch lange 

darüber sprechen können.

EIN GROSSER SCHATTEN 

Ich stehe im knietiefem Wasser während Matthias mit unserem Kapitain aufmerksam das Wasser hinter uns und um uns 

beobachtet. Mein Guide befindet sich ein paar Schritte vor mir, wir laufen in Richtung eines weißen Sandstrands. 

Plötzlich bleibt Javier stehen. STOP!...CAST...STRIP...STRIP...WAIT...STRIP... 

Mit kurzen Zügen bewege ich die Fliege auf uns zu, der kleine Schatten auf dem hellen Sandboden springt an und verfolgt 

diese bis unter die Rutenspitze. Als mir kein Raum mehr bleibt um weiter zu strippen bemerkt der Fisch ebenfalls 

dass etwas nicht stimmt und da sein erster Instinkt sich zu verstecken ist, entschließt er sich zwischen meine Beine zu 

flüchten. Es ist ein Zitronenhai...obwohl er wirklich klein ist, ist es ein unangenehmes Gefühl einen Räuber mit messerscharfen 

Zähnen zwischen seinen Füßen zu haben. Als ich mich etwas entspannen konnte ruft uns Matthias zu, Eike soll 

auf dem anderen Boot einen wirklich großen Hai gehakt haben. Wir rennen zurück zum Boot um uns das Spektakel 

anzusehen. Wir nähern uns Eike und Manuel als plötzlich hinter dem kleinen Schiff eine dunkle Kreatur auftaucht. 

Es ist beachtlich großer Schatten! 

Eike drillt einen ca. 260cm langen Zitronenhai auf 

seiner 10er T&T Exocett. Der Hai verlangt alles von 

seinem Gerät ab, mittlerweile geht der Kampf mehr 

als eine Stunde. Während der Fisch noch nicht wirklich 

müde wirkt ist Eike die Erschöpfung im Gesicht 

deutlich anzusehen. Für alle anderen Beteiligten ist 

es eine wilkommene Gelegenheit um in aller Ruhe 

ein kaltes Bier zu trinken und um die Füße etwas 

hoch zu legen. Die Crew wird von dem Hai quer 

durch die Lagune gezogen ehe nach etwa 90min das 

Unglück passiert. Der Zitronenhai macht eine schnelle 

Bewegung und schwimmt unter den Rumpf, das 

Boot ist zu träge um der schnellen Aktion des Hais 

zu Folgen und zwingt Eike ins Wasser zu springen. 

Für einen kurzen Moment verschwindet er mit dem 

Monster unter der Wasseroberfläche. Als er wieder 

auftaucht und mit ihm seine erschlaffte Rutenspitze 

geht ein Raunen durch die Lagune, die scharfkantigen 

Muscheln am Kiel haben das Stahlvorfach 

durchtrennt. Doch Eike hat immer noch ein breites Lächeln im Gesicht, ist bestens bedient mit der Zeit, die er mit diesem 

Ausnahmefisch verbringen durfte und verlangte erst einmal nach eine Abkühlung in Form von einem Bier. 

AUF LICHT FOLGT STILLE 

Tanzende Menschen stehen vor einem Gebäude, blinkende Lichter betonen ihre Silhouetten, welche sich zum Takt der 

Musik bewegen. Ein Blick ins Innere des Gebäudes zeigt deutlich, dass sich nahezu alle jüngeren Bewohner der Insel in 

der einzigen Diskothek der Insel versammelt haben um das Wochenen- de zu feiern. Plötzlich tritt eine unerwartet Stille 

ein, welche Dunkelheit mit sich bringt. Es ist einer von vielen Stromausfällen an die man sich hier auf Gran Roque gewöhnen 

muss. Doch die Inselbewohner sind darauf vorbereitet, so hat nahezu jedes Gebäude einen Generator um Strom 

für einen gewissen Zeitraum zu erzeugen und um die Nacht tanzend zu beenden. Eine gute Wlan Verbindung gibt es in 

den wenigsten Unterkünften. Die Mehrzahl der social Media Verdorbenen sowie jene die Kontakt nach Hause pflegen 

möchten, treffen sich früh Morgens am Marktplatz, um das freie Netz dort zu nutzen.

DAS SILBER DER LAGUNE 

Moskitos schwirren um uns herum, es ist schwer zu beschreiben wie viele es tatsächlich 

sind. Ein Blick ins Innere des Bootes verrät allerdings, dass es einige sein 

müssen. Der Boden ist voll von erschlagenen Mücken. Als wir an den Mangroven 

vorbei driften stürzen sich die kleinen Blutsauger auf uns. Es fällt mir nicht leicht 

mich noch ansatzweise zu konzentrieren doch ich versuche den Schmerz und das 

Summen zu verdrängen. Heute möchte ich mir den Traum eines Tarpon erfüllen. 

Die driftende Fischerei gestaltet sich schwer, da die meisten Fische sich tief in den 

Mangroven verstecken. Abgesehen von ein paar Nachläufern können wir nicht viel 

Aktivität feststellen. Es wir Zeit für einen Plan B. Wir besprechen uns mit unserem 

Guide und beschließen in eine nahegelegene Lagune zu gehen, die Chancen einen 

Tarpon zu fangen sollen dort besser sein, auch wenn in dieser Lagune hauptsächlich 

kleinere Exemplare zu finden sind. 

Nach einem kurzen Spaziergang über 

Land erreichen wir die Lagune. Würde 

man diese nicht sehen können, würde 

man sie auf jeden Fall riechen. Wir 

kämpfen uns durch den faulig stinkenden 

Schlamm zum Inneren der Lagune. 

Als wir endlich das Wasser erreichen und 

uns darauf freuen uns zu waschen, wird 

uns schnell bewusst, dass wir schleunigst 

einige Meter weiter ins tiefere Wasser 

müssen. 

Die Wassertemperatur ähnelt einem Termalbad. 

Es ist mir eine Rätsel wie Fische in 

diesem Habitat überleben können, doch 

die vielen Kleinfische um uns rum zeigen 

deutlich, dass es möglich ist. Als wir um 

eine Kurve gehen und einen Blick in den 

größten Teil der Lagune werfen können, 

sehen wir direkt mehrere Schulen Baby 

Tarpon rollen. Leider scheinen auch diese 

kein großes Interesse an unseren Fliegen 

zu haben. Ich wechsle auf einen Clouser 

Minnow und kurz darauf schraubt sich der erste Silberbarren 

aus dem Wasser in die Luft. 

Der Tarpon ist klein und der Drill kurz, allerdings nicht 

weniger spektakulär. Ich bin überglücklich meinen 

ersten Tarpon gefangen und mir damit einen großen 

Traum erfüllt zu haben. Auf dem Weg zurück durch die 

Lagune gelingt es mir noch einen weiteren Tarpon und 

einen kleinen Snook zufangen, ein perfektes Ende am 

letzten Tag unseres Trips.
