Legacies
The Bursary Fund aims to provide access to
St Albans School for young people who would
otherwise be unable to take up their place without
financial assistance.
The Bursary Fund is especially relevant to OAs who attended
the School prior to the mid-1970s as beneficiaries of the
Direct Grant scheme. This initiative offered the chance of
a superb education to bright pupils, irrespective of their
parents’ financial circumstances. Now, in the absence of any
MUSIC SCHOOL
opening
On Wednesday 19th September,
the eagerly anticipated Music
School was opened by David
Pickard (OA 1978), Director of the
BBC Proms.
The new facility which comprises nine
practice rooms, a recording studio,
office space and ensemble area was
created through generous donors to the
Building Futures campaign. Finally, the
Music Department has a home worthy
of its name.
BURSARIES
Guests including The Mayor of St
Albans, Cllr Rosemary Farmer, were
welcomed and entertained in the Smith
Space, kindly funded by Sir Martin
Smith (OA 1960) and Lady Smith OBE.
Our grateful thanks go to them and
the following donors, without whom
the Music School would not have
been possible; Sir Roy Gardner, Mr
Chris Fewkes (OA 1958), Ian Jennings
(OA 1962), the OA Club and other
anonymous donors to the Building
Futures campaign.
state support, the Bursary Fund is vital to preserving the
mixture of academic and extra-curricular excellence with
social diversity that is so central a part of St Albans School’s
historic mission and character.
We will be launching a new campaign to build on our existing
fundraising in this area. Please look out for communication
over the next few months containing more information about
our aims and targets – helping to increase the number of
bursary pupils at the School.
THE GIFT OF
EDUCATION
Make a difference, leave a legacy
Inspired by the School’s long and distinguished
history of benefaction, our prime focus for
the Foundation are the needs of current and
future pupils. Our vision is to help each pupil
flourish intellectually and personally, developing
self-knowledge and self-confidence in order to find
meaning and purpose in life.
We strive to allow the most talented and deserving
young people to benefit from a St Albans School
education regardless of parental ability to pay the fees
and also to preserve and update the School’s historic
site to provide the best opportunities for our pupils.
In order to do this, we need your help…
A donation in your will can be a simple and taxeffective
way of making a significant gift to the
Foundation, that many would be unable to afford
during their lifetime. Any gift to a registered charity
made in your will, whether in the form of cash, shares,
property or other items, is exempt from inheritance
tax. Legacy giving enables many people who are ‘assetrich’
rather than ‘cash-rich’ to make a meaningful
contribution to future generations of pupils at St
Albans School.
Membership to the Gateway
Society is exclusive to those who
have left a gift in their will for the
St Albans School Foundation. You
will receive an exclusive Gateway
silk tie (or silk scarf equivalent for
female members), as well as an
invitation to our annual Gateway
Feast – a unique dinner at the School with a different
theme each year.
“In 1956 I was fortunate enough
to be awarded a Hertfordshire
County Council scholarship to St
Albans School under the Direct
Grant Scheme. I am convinced that
the subsequent seven years facilitated
my full career in the RAF as an
officer and pilot. I am delighted
that the Gateway Society exists to
offer a means of making available
the opportunity to benefit from the
education that I did. Accordingly,
I commend membership of the
Gateway Society to all those who
wish to support the education of
future generations.”
