Graduation set for
Sunday at Arena
By Jenny Horstman
and Courtney Plooster
As the school year draws to a
close, Warrior seniors are realizing
that their days at WHS
are quickly coming to an end.
Tears will fall and memories will
be made as family, friends and peers
gather to watch the commencement
exercises for the class of 2004 on
Sunday at the Sioux Falls Arena. The
graduates will celebrate their special
event at 3 p.m. with seniors Kayla
Tramp and Miranda Pratt delivering
memories and thoughts for the future
as class speakers.
Before Warrior caps are tossed,
Roosevelt High School seniors will
receive their diplomas at 1 p.m.
Lincoln High School will follow
WHS at 5 p.m.
Pratt said she is excited to speak to
her fellow graduates.
“It’s an honor that I was chosen to
speak to the rest of the class of
2004,” she said. “I’m really nervous,
but I’m excited at the same time.”
Pratt said she wants to prove a
point to the class of 2004 in her
speech.
“I want to remind the class that
each day is important, so live it to the
fullest,” she said.
Tramp, the other speaker for the
class of 2004, said she is also excited
but nervous at the chance to speak in
front of her classmates and their
families.
“I will be nervous when the day
comes,” she said. “All of my experiences
over the past four years have
taught me lifelong lessons.”
Both speakers plan on sharing the
most import things they have learned
during their time at high school
“You need to learn from each mistake
you make, and grow to be a better
person after making the mistake,”
Pratt said.
Pratt and Tramp will speak after
the 480 graduates enter the Arena
and the combined choir and symphonic
band present music. Other
dignitaries will also speak.
Seniors gather for last time at party
By Kady Hopp
Every year after the commencement ceremony,
the graduates come together for one last
hoorah at the Senior Class Party.
Seniors are expected to check-in between 10
and 10:30 p.m. on Sunday at the front doors of
WHS and will not be headed home until 5 a.m.
the following morning.
Throughout the evening students may play a
variety of games, race over inflatables, be entertained
by karaoke and enjoy a banquet of free
food. There will also be a retreat where seniors
can relax and have a good beverage, but parents
are hopeful that this will just be a short break
before returning to the party.
Seniors will begin the evening with a number
of tickets, which they may add to by participating
in and winning games. These tickets will
allow the individual to be eligible for drawings
of certain prizes that will be given out at the
conclusion of the festivities.
One event that some seniors are looking forward
to is the hypnotist. From 1-2 a.m. Monday
morning all of the students and involved parents
will be crammed into the auditorium for a
special performance. Seniors will be selected to
be hypnotized and will be the entertainment for
the hour.
Senior Sarah Eberhard said she is looking
forward to the experience.
“I am really excited because I want to see the
hypnotist,” Eberhard said. “Maybe I will be
lucky and win something, also.”
Senior Sam Norberg said he also is looking
forward to the excitement of the hypnotist.
Senior survey reveals post-graduation plans
Survey of 480 graduating seniors
conducted by newspaper staff
Each spring the News of
Washington surveys the graduating
class at WHS to find what each
senior plans for after graduation.
This information is collected
from a volunteer, non-scientific survey
of all class members. This year,
the News of Washington also asked
seniors to provide their favorite
memory and a piece of advice to
underclassmen. Some of those
pieces of advice and memories are
also included in the survey results.
On pages 2-8 are the results of
the survey. After the name of each
student, listed alphabetically, students
indicated what school, branch
of the military or work opportunity
they plan to pursue next year.
Many respondents also chose to
provide a favorite memory or piece
