HAMELIN
Young people from our Barnet and Enfield
performing arts classes, joined forces to breath
life into a brand new promenade musical.
Back in March, all four of the
weekend performing arts
classes at Bodens produced an
amazing, large scale immersive
Musical named HAMELIN based
on the story of the pied piper
of Hamelin.
Hamelin begins with a small
town in Germany, the town’s
elder has died, and the townsfolk
decide that the best way to
move along with the times
would be to have an election to
find a mayor. Campaigns begin,
promises are made, and after
a long wait, the results are in!
However, the new mayor is not
quite what she seemed, and
while her and her council sit in
their heated swimming pool,
the rest of the town becomes
infested with rats. Faced with
rebelling townsfolk, the mayor
offers to pay a mysterious piper
1000 guilder to rid the town
of the rats. The piper keeps
his end of the bargain, but the
mayor does differently, offering
only 50 guilder to the piper.
The piper gets his revenge by
taking the children of Hamelin.
The townsfolk grieve their loss
for a whole year before we
discover that the ‘hardworking’
mayor of Hamelin has been
secretley keeping money for
herself. Angered and shocked,
she is banished to the outskirts
of Hamelin. Meanwhile, a little
lame boy has taken the mayor’s
undeserved wages and used them
to pay the piper, the children
return home and Hamelin is happy
once again!
Hamelin was a spectacular
production, and performances
like this require a lot of effort
THE PLACE FOR PERFORMING ARTS
behind the scenes. The rehearsal
process largely involved all
the students working together
to devise songs, characters,
and additional aspects of the
storyline. I really enjoyed
having the opportunity to
insert my ideas and voice my
opinions on the piece!
When we knew we were going
to be involved in writing a
musical as a company, we had
to have ideas for our songs. We
began by writing these down
along with themes, words,
characters (basically anything
we could think of)that would
help us create the songs for this
brand new musical.
