Mike’s Tavern on First Street in Cle Elum has been under new ownership
for one year now with favorable fan feedback. Shannon Weaver recalls
her first job was at a family-owned cafe in Ohio. She has always loved

KVH Medical Assistant Apprenticeship Program

One year ago, KVH launched its first medical assistant apprenticeship
program in partnership with the Washington Association of Community
and Migrant Health Centers. With few spaces and many applicants, being
selected for the apprenticeship was, and is, a significant achievement.
Two of those selected were Alisha Liedtke and Miranda Flores. Both were
already KVH employees. Both loved what they were already doing when
they were approached to consider applying. But after some time thinking
about the opportunity, both women decided to commit.
Today, they’re an integral part of their care teams at KVH Family Medicine
- Ellensburg, and strongly encourage the apprenticeship program to
anyone who would enjoy spending their days providing patient care.
Medical Assistants are considered front-line members of a clinic patient care team, acting as a patient/provider liaison.
They’re typically the first person a patient sees after check-in, and the one who first hears why they're there for the visit.
In addition to performing certain procedures, MAs are trained to listen and observe. Before the provider ever enters the
exam room, the MA has communicated what they’ve learned to their team, both in-person and via computer charting.

Kelsey Schmidt is the owner of C.W. Barbershop in
Ellensburg, which specializes in men’s haircuts. Kelsey
has 14+ years experience and has owned the shop since
May 2, 2007. Accompanying Kelsey is Dannica Wulf,
who has been at the shop for 5 1/2 years. The shop also
welcomes Leah Lewis and Kassondra Merryman who
are new to the Ellensburg area.

Barbershop has a wide variety of clientele; from baby’s
first haircut, to old timers, locals, and students. In fact,
barbering is not new to the location – there has been a
shop there since at least the 1970’s.
The ladies find that getting to know their customers is
very rewarding – hearing stories of times gone by,
current events and the joys and sorrows of life. “Barbers
make great listeners; our customers are like family. We
share in their lives,” said Kelsey.

The Cottage Cafe & Fireside Lounge was established
in 1935 and is owned by Ben and Wanda Goldie. The
Cottage, which has 45 employees, specializes in familystyle

for her small craft spirit’s company she quotes her
husband Justin, who refers to it as “Washington’s most

Alaska that developed several businesses, Jennifer is
right at home bringing award winning spirits to customers
not only in the Pacific Northwest, but around the

in London this past Spring.

The Kittitas County Chamber of Commerce is
proud with the recent hire of Ms. Amy McGuffin
as the new CEO of the organization.
Ms. McGuffin has been a staff member of the
organization for more than seven years. Most
recently, as Director of Tourism, Ms. McGuffin has
successfully driven the quality and breadth of the
marketing that the Chamber performs for both local
municipalities as well as Kittitas County in general.
For example, earlier this month, the Chamber’s
“DiscoverCleElum.com” TV commercial from 2017 was
Amy McGuffin
nominated for a regional Emmy award from the
Northwest Chapter of Academy of Television Arts
and Sciences.
The organization is looking forward to Ms.
McGuffin continuing this legacy of service to the
community now and into the future. She is joined
by other women, Jennifer, Tippy, Laura, Gemma
and Amy Kaiser. These women bring over 20 years
of professional experience and dedication in nonprofit
management. Their duties include Economic
Advancement, Membership Services, Visitor Experience
and Commercial Properties Management.

Attic Treasures Thrift Store has been a thriving part of
Cle Elum’s shopping experience for over 10 years. Terra
Silvasy, the current owner, has been at the helm for 2
years. She’s accompanied by Sara Sahlinger and Calley
Lowatchie – her two loyal, hardworking “rock stars”.
Attic Treasures is a second hand store that works hard to
prevent waste by keeping items out of the dumps and
landfills – what may be trash to some is another’s treasure.
The store accepts donations and sells quality clothing,
housewares, books, vintage and retro items, and lots more.
They are mindful to wash textiles and dishes before selling
them. They also make t-shirt bags from damaged shirts,
recycle old electronics and appliances, and get damaged
clothing to sewers. The ladies love helping people in the
area while helping to “save our earth” as well.
They are constantly innovating ideas to improve the
shopping experience in the store and to meet the needs of
the community. Terra says, “We have plans to expand in
the future, but mum’s the word until we get all of our
ducks in a row. Changes are coming and I think the
community will like them.”

Horse Park supporters know “it takes a village” to sustain
the Park, and the picture (at left) shows the small team
that hosted close to 40 events and over 30,000 visitors during
the 2018 season. While Leslie and Aunna handle administration
from the office, Vickie, Cole, Amber and
Terry provided boots-on-the-ground muscle and ran heavy
equipment during many long days in all kinds of weather
from April through October. Amber has worked for the
Park for 4 years and will be joining the Coast Guard in
November – her hard work and sunny personality will be
sorely missed. Vickie and Cole decided to pursue other interests
as the 2018 season ended. Terry is the ulmate “seasonal
employee” – he has been with the Park for 8 years
during the summer and spends his winter months as a senior
manager at Snoqualmie Summit for the 23rd year. According
to Leslie, “Terry’s knowledge of the Park and the
skills he’s developed are essential”.
Aunna is new to the Park this season, but has quickly become
Leslie’s right arm – she balances her busy schedule at
the Park with her second job as a makeup artist at Winning
Foundations in Cle Elum. Hats off to all these dedicated and
hardworking individuals who keep the Park humming.

- 5pm and Saturday, 10am - 3pm. They offer a
