The Extracorporeal
Life Support Organization
(ELSO) is
pleased to announce
the creation of a
structured organization
entitled Euro-
ELSO. As an integral
part of ELSO, Euro-
ELSO will supervise
and undertake
scientifi c initiatives
and activities meant to promote multidisciplinary
ECLS application, investigation, research,
education and training in Europe in
the fi eld of extracorporeal support for cardiocirculatory
or respiratory failure.
Th is group will also strengthen collaborative
eff orts between European, North
American, and worldwide ECMO centers
in improving the outcome of these critically
ill patients with cardiorespiratory failure in
whom extracorporeal techniques are being
applied in increasing frequency. Th e formation
of Euro-ELSO is the fi rst of expanding
collaborations around the globe to ECMO
centers outside North America.
In order to offi cially present Euro-ELSO
and to promote professional experience exchange
and scientifi c activities in this respect,
ELSO will organise the 1 st Euro-ELSO meeting
which will be held in Rome, Italy, from
May 11 th till May 13 th , 2012. Th e conference
location will be at the Ergife Hotel and Conference
Centre, 10 minutes from the Vatican
State and St. Paul’s Cathedral.
Th e conference will follow the usual ELSO
annual meeting format (half day, full day,
half day) followed by a Post-Conference
Course (May 13 th -May 14 th ) titled “Practical
Aspects of Extracorporeal Support in Respiratory
Failure”.
www.elso.med.umich.edu
1 st Congress - Rome, May 11 th -13 th , 2012
Post-Conference Course - May 13 th -14 th , 2012
Besides invited lectures and a “Lectio Magistralis”,
there will be space and time for free
communications (oral and poster). Based on
the great interest and the multidisciplinary
approach in ECMO, ELSO expects a large audience
and attendance in Rome.
ELSO hopes that your Institution/Company
will take into deep consideration to attend
the conference or other parallel scientifi
c or social activities which will make these
events a unique opportunity to discuss and
exchange scientifi c knowledge and experiences
about ECMO.
All the details and information about the
1 st Euro-ELSO meeting are available on the
ELSO website (www.elso.med.umich.edu) or
through direct contacts with the ELSO Offi ce
(Peter Rycus at prycus@umich.edu), by contact
Educational Corner
Demonstrations, Simulations, and Hands-On
Please join EURO-ELSO at the 1st Congress in Rome in the exhibition hall’s Educational Corner where
institutions from around the world will showcase their ECLS education programmes. Highlights will include
the latest and most advanced systems and programmes for simulation and training in the ECMO
and ECLS fi elds.
Demonstrations of simulation software, mannequins, computer simulation tools and a high fi delity simulation
will be available for participants to get hands on experience. Established centres in Europe, Australia
and the United States will share their experience in personnel training, educational pathways and
ECMO training curriculum. Audience participation in selected ECMO simulation scenarios will be encouraged
to enhance the understanding of simulation principles.
Stage Presentations will allow large audiences to participate in educational training activities.
Small Group Forums will allow smaller groups to get hands on experience and also allow an educational
environment for exchange of information. Th ese sessions will run for two hours with repeating presentations
every hour. Th ree institutions will
simultaneously present their programes
during the Small Group Forum.
Please plan accordingly to allow time to
attend two of the three presentations.
