What could be the perfect ending
a family holiday, delicious leftovers
and shopping deals? Norwood's
Holiday Extravaganza, of course!
Due to its popularity, this holiday
party expanded its activities, and
offers even more events all ages
can enjoy. Maybe it should be
renamed, the Norwood Holiday
Extraordinary Extravanganza!
On Thanksgiving weekend,
while stores and shopping malls
are offering their weekend specials
to kick off the holiday season,
Norwood hosts a great afternoon
that has become a favored holiday
tradition, The Holiday Extravaganza.
The fun-filled (and FREE)
family event will be held on Saturday,
a storefront decorating contest,
a reindeer dash, hayrides, entertainment,
arts & crafts, holiday
Paying it Forward
You are never too young to learn generosity
By Kara Shea
Paying it forward is the notion
that one can respond to a
person’s kindness, by being kind
to someone else. A simple concept
in theory, but one with exponential
power and possibility;
and 8th grade student Caeleigh
Brown can attest to this more
than most.
As a three sport athlete in
Norwood, Caeleigh is used to
rigorous training and activity.
So in 2016, her father suggested
she try the New England Kids
Triathlon, as it would combine
her love of swimming, with
running and biking. Overall,
it would be a great physical
challenge for her, and he was
correct. Caeleigh enjoyed the
Triathlon so much, that she
planned to do it again the following
year.
Plans changed however,
when Caeleigh was diagnosed
with a rare form of cancer
called Acute Promyeloid Leukemia
in January of 2017.
“It came as a huge surprise
to everyone, and it happened
fast” Tracey, her mother noted.
“One minute Caeleigh was a
regular kid, a student athlete in
the prime of swim season; and
the next, she was a child diagnosed
with a life threatening
disease.”
For 10 months, Caeleigh
received chemotherapy as part
of her treatment. Around 4-5
hours every single day were
spent within the walls of The
Jimmy Fund Clinic, battling her
own body. But with the help of
those around her, she never lost
her spirit.
“I would try and focus on the
bright side,” Caeleigh recalled.
“The Jimmy Fund is a happy
place and there are so many
people there that want to make
you smile. The air is always
filled with an abundance of love
and encouragement. “
To add to this encouragement,
Caeleigh had her best
friend Livvy Bedard right by
her side during treatment. The
two were inseparable before the
diagnosis, but as the times got
tough, this was a bond that persevered
through it all.
In fact, Livvy and another
friend, decided to run the triathlon
in tribute to Caeleigh in July, 2017.
It was friendship in its truest formindividuals
supporting each other.
This selfless act of love inspired
Caeleigh. So, when she finally
went into remission on October
6th of 2017, her mission was to
get back in shape to participate
once again in the triathlon. But
this time, she wasn’t running for,
or by herself.
“Once I found out that I was
in remission, I knew that I wanted
other children to experience something
that makes them smile like I
did,” Caeleigh said.
Therefore, the 2018 Triathlon
would be for all of the children still
receiving treatment at the Jimmy
Fund. Those who still spent hours
each day undergoing chemo. It
would be about something bigger
than herself.
Caleigh and a passionate group
of nine of her friends and family
participated in the Triathlon together,
and decided to raise money
to honor the The Jimmy Fund. Although
this was not a charity race,
Caeleigh and company believed in
paying it forward so that all of the
children still in treatment could experience
something joyful during
their difficult time.
The team’s original goal was
to raise $500-$1000 dollars. But
in the end, the girls came together
and raised a total of $3,500. A
truly commendable sum.
This money was presented to
The Jimmy Fund, and is intended
for a holiday party for the children.
They will see their nurses
dressed up in their favorite characters,
receive presents, and it will
ultimately keep the clinic in good
spirits throughout a challenging
time of year for families.
Running under the name
Team Caeleigh, the girls sported
shirts that read “Together Everyone
Achieves More.” A sentiment
that carried through the day as
each girl not only participated in
the race, but finished it.
“I remember as one would
cross the finish line, they would
wait for the next orange shirt to
come across as well, cheering the
entire time,” Caeleigh recalled.
Currently, with the race finished
and the money donated,
Team Caeleigh is adamant on
continuing to pay it forward. The
girls have one last year to participate
in the kid’s triathlon, and the
goal is to expand their team and
raise even more money for a worthy
cause. With this sort of mindset,
the possibilities are endless.
For those so young, this team
has come to understand a general
truth about life throughout this
process. You don’t always get to
choose what happens to you, but
you can choose how you react to
it. For Caeleigh and those around
her, this means taking any chance
to help and support others, and to
always pay it forward.
a Pediatric Oncology Nurse
Donations Needed!
WBN's 3rd Annual Mitten/Scarf Drive begins November 1.
by Bella Caggiano
The Women's Business Network of Norwood
(WBN) is holding its Third Annual
Mitten/Scarf Drive, Donation boxes will
be located at Blue Hills Banks, 111 Lenox
St., Norwood Senior Center, 275 Prospect
Street, and the Morrill Memorial Library,
33 Walpole St., November 1 through December
1. The first week in December, all
items will be donated to the Norwood Food
Pantry and the Home for Little Wanderers
Thrift Shop, in Roslindale.
In its inaugural year, this event yielded
a tremendous a response and the generosity
of Norwood residents was impressive.
The local networking group were so proud
of the Norwood community last year as the
donations doubled with over 150 winter
mittens, gloves, scarves and hats, most brand
new with tags, many hand knitted, collected
throughout the month. Two large donations
were made to the Norwood Food Pantry to
combine with their winter coat drive, and
many bags were delivered to the Home for
Little Wanderers Thrift Shop. According to
the Norwood Food Pantry Donations Coordinator,
these donations were greatly appreciated
and helped many Norwood families
keep warm during the winter months.
Our Town … Getting to Know You
Engineering Department
by Donna Lane
This is the fifth in a 6-part series on
the Town’s departments and key employees
within them.
Norwood’s Engineering Department
is a lean three-person
team — Mark Ryan, the Town
Engineer, who also does double
duty as the Director of Public
Works; Andy Murphy, Assistant
Town Engineer; and Brian Murphy,
Civil Engineer — all of whom
have degrees in Civil Engineering.
All three are also approved by the
Department of Environmental
Protection as Soil Evaluators, and
both Ryan and Murphy are registered
Professional Land Surveyors.
The team is assisted by a part-time
draftsman. That’s a lot of knowledge
and expertise for our Town!
This team provides a broad
range of services to all of the
boards and committees of the
Town, including the Selectmen,
Planning Board, Board of Appeals,
the Conservation Commission,
the Department of Public
Works (DPW), the Recreation Department
and the General Manager,
about development and
problems with traffic, sewer, drainage,
roadway and construction
issues. They also work with residents,
builders, private engineering
groups and the Massachusetts
Department of Transportation
(MassDOT).
What are some examples of
what they do? For the Planning
Board, they review plans, provide
cost estimates and inspection services;
for the Board of Appeals
and Conservation Commission,
they provide plan reviews and engineering
opinions. They also
provide construction design,
cost estimates and engineering
services to the DPW and assist
the Rec Department on a variety
of projects. Their universe
is wide-ranging and no two
days are ever the same!
They perform all of the
design work for our roadways,
including traffic islands, curbs,
sidewalks and paving. They provide
construction administration
and supervision of the annual
road resurfacing project. And they
perform surveys for roadway and
utility projects and keep all of the
utility records for the Town. They
also maintain all of the Town’s tax
maps and some of the residential
property maps.
They work to resolve drainage
problems and have redesigned
drainage systems to alleviate flooding
in various areas of town, and
they provide engineering assistance
for water main projects.
When builders have a question
as to where utilities are located or
what construction requirements
they must follow, they seek advice
from Engineering. Residents who
have questions about their property
also call on the department
for help as do private engineering
companies tasked with completion
of residential and commercial
projects.
The projects that hit closest
to home for many residents as
having immense value are those
that the Engineering Department
has been working on solving
for a while: two of the most
needed improvements to safe
and adequate service needed for
our roadways — the take-yourlife-in-your-hands
Upland Road
and Prospect Street intersection,
and the-wait-for-ten-plus-lightchanges-to-get-to-the-highway
University Avenue/Everett Street
intersection at Route 1.
For the first project, the department
has been managing the
design of intersection improvements,
including the installation
of traffic signals at Upland and
Prospect streets. The project will
be funded by MassDOT in calendar
2020/2021.
For the Route 1 problem, the
Engineering Department has provided
input to MassDOT and its
design engineer on improvements
to this intersection. The Town
has, in fact, put pressure on the
State since 1996 to upgrade this
intersection. Construction is expected
to be funded in calendar
2021/2022. The wheels have
moved slowly, but both of the improvements
will bring a huge sigh
of relief to those residents who use
these areas daily.
We cannot always see what the
folks in Engineering do and we
don’t always recognize what their
contributions are because their
work is often advisory. And, really,
how many people get excited
about relining sewer pipes or resurfacing
roads? We just take these
services for granted. So, it was interesting
to learn about something
that’s rather exciting for the
department — the development
of a GIS (Geographic
Information System) that
will make record keeping
more efficient. The GIS
is basically an intelligent
mapping system that can
pinpoint where assets are located,
such as water mains,
gate valves, street maps and
utilities.
Imagine that there is a
fire or flood and information
is needed rapidly. The
GIS can pull up the map of
an area, locate the problem
area and who is affected.
Informed decisions can be
made quickly and repair
teams dispatched with precise
knowledge of what
needs to be done. When
speed and accuracy are important,
a fully functional GIS will
be invaluable. Currently, the Assessor’s
tax maps, the zoning map,
and the water, sewer, and drain
systems have been converted to
electronic format.
“Up to now, funding for the
GIS has been limited, but we have
Having spent decades saving
for retirement, it can feel like a
major shift for retirees to transition
to spending down their hardearned
assets. Recent research
from Ameriprise Financial revealed
that 68 percent of retirees
have not tapped into their retirement
savings, except for taking
required minimum distributions.1
Many of these retirees are reluctant
to dip into their principal for
fear of running out of money, the
anticipation of increased healthcare
expenses and other factors. If
you share these or other concerns
about the longevity of your savings,
know there are steps you can
take to help you feel more confident.
Here are some tips to help
you get started:
Understand the arc of retirement
spending. Annual expenses
generally are highest within the
first few years of retirement. This
is because retirees are often taking
advantage of their newfound leisure
time to pursue hobbies, travel,
dine out and shop. Spending tends
to slow down with advancing age.
You may find it reassuring to realize
there’s a good chance your lifestyle
expenses in retirement could
level out or decrease over time.
Plan for healthcare costs.
Healthcare is consuming an increasing
proportion of many
retirees’ income. You can start
preparing for these expenses today
by researching your insurance and
savings options and developing a
strategy to cover your needs. Your
options could include a combination
of the following: Medicare,
Medigap supplemental insurance,
health savings accounts (HSAs),
long-term care policies, continuing
health insurance through your
current or former employer, and
other dedicated healthcare savings.
Having funds and protection
in place can help you feel more
prepared to handle a medical
emergency or more routine care.
Understand the level of risk in
your portfolio. As you turn your
savings into income, it’s important
to review your portfolio and assess
your level of risk. This means
ensuring that you have a diversified
portfolio that suits your anticipated
spending and balances your
needs for liquidity and growth. For
example, consider having a year
to several years of easily accessible
investments to provide income in
case of a market downturn or an
unexcepted financial event in your
life. At the same time, it’s important
to also have investments that
are positioned for growth, or at
the minimum, keeping up with
inflation. Many retirees spend decades
in retirement, so plan your
investment strategy with longevity
in mind.
Devise a sustainable withdrawal
strategy. A well-crafted
retirement income plan can help
you avoid running out of money
and feel more confident about
spending your hard-earned assets.
Tally up your various sources
of retirement income, which may
include Social Security, annuities,
retirement assets and other investment
earnings. Then, decide
which assets you will tap into first,
and when you will claim Social
Security benefits. Remember that
at 70 ½ years of age, you are required
to take required minimum
distributions from your traditional
IRA and employer-sponsored
retirement plans, so work this income
into your plan.
Consider the tax consequences.
Reducing the tax bill on
retirement income is a priority for
many retirees, yet according to the
research, 53 percent of retirees feel
understanding the tax impacts of
Slip Sliding Away
As winter forges on, we are
forced to deal with ice and snow
and poor weather conditions. We
have to be vigilant with our driving
and certainly walking on icy
streets. Slips and falls, and especially
auto accidents, can create
more damage than just a bump
and a bruise. If you are experiencing
the following symptoms
for more than three days from an
accident or fall, you should seek
professional help: back pain, neck
pain, headaches, nausea, difficulty
concentrating, focusing with reading,
or difficulty sleeping.
Michael H. was rear ended
while stopped at a red light. He immediately
felt a twinge in his neck
and his lower back, but thought it
was ok. As time went on, however,
the pain intensified and he started
to get headaches. Since he didn’t
normally get headaches, he knew
something wasn’t right.
A friend told him to seek the
help of Dr. Goldstein, at The
Holistic Center at Bristol Square.
Dr. Goldstein performed a consultation
and examination and explained
how he could eliminate his
discomfort and pain. Once under
care with Dr. Goldstein, Michael’s
symptoms started to resolve. His
headaches became less frequent
and were less intense until they
went away altogether. His neck
and lower back pain improved
with chiropractic adjustments and
a home exercise program. Today,
Michael has resumed all the activities
he enjoyed prior to the accident.
If you have had a slip and fall,
or have been in an auto accident
and are experiencing symptoms,
Norwood Landfill Solar Project – Winter Street – FAQs
What are the benefits of putting a
solar array on the Norwood site?
According to Massachusetts
Department of Energy Resources
(MA DOER), solar arrays are an
optimal use of landfill areas, generating
electricity on typically unusable
land. One financial benefit
for the Town is predictable and
below market wholesale rates. Bottom-line,
the solar array reduces
Norwood’s purchased energy costs
and puts Norwood’s Winter Street
landfill to good use.
Why is this site ideal for a solar
array?
Like many landfills, the Winter
Street landfill has excellent exposure
and orientation to sunlight.
The area that is planned to be
covered by solar panels is free from
shading from trees or buildings
and is primarily south west facing,
providing for good sun light.
How big is the solar array and how
much energy will it generate?
The array will cover approximately
70% of the landfill area
and is rated at 2.6 MW of peak
power. This size array will produce
~1% of Norwood’s total annual
load. The array will generate
over 3 million kWh annually, the
annual average power consumed
by 600 typical Norwood homes. In
a typical day, 15 minutes of Norwood’s
entire energy use can be
provided by this project.
Who will pay for it?
The Town will not pay for any
construction costs related to the
PV system. The PV system on the
landfill will be paid for via a commercial
Power Purchase Agreement
(PPA) with Tangent Energy.
The Norwood Light Department
plans to sign a PPA with Tangent
Energy to purchase the solar electricity
produced at the landfill for a
25-year period at a rate currently
below our average cost of energy.
The Town of Norwood will have
the option to buy the equipment
at certain intervals throughout the
contract.
Will this solar array be “green” and
renewable?
Solar panels convert sunlight in
to electricity and hence, are considered
renewable energy sources.
Nonrenewable electricity sources
burn fuel which generate emissions,
including CO2. This solar
array is renewable and is projected
to avoid over 1,400 tons of CO2
annually.
How big are the solar panels?
The solar array consists of
over 7,000 solar PV panels, each
mounted on a ground-level racking
system. Each panel is 77 inches
tall, 39 inches wide, and 2 inches
thick.
How are the panels mounted on
the landfill?
The panels are mounted to a
metal racking system that is “anchored”
into cement filled tubs
spaced evenly under the racks.
The cement filled tubs keep the
arrays properly aligned and positioned,
despite high winds, rain,
hail, or snow. This approach
avoids any piercing of the landfill
membrane cap, maintaining
the integrity of the landfill cover.
How tall is the array when
mounted over the landfill?
The racking system allows
the panels to be oriented toward
the sun at an optimal average
angle (fixed tilt and rotate). The
lower edge (south west) of the
panels are often 2 – 3 feet off the
ground. The back edge (north
east edge) ranges from 5 – 10 feet
off the ground, partially dependent
on the slope of the ground
underneath.
How long will it take to install
this solar array on the landfill
site?
A solar array of this size typically
takes 6 -12 weeks to install
over a landfill. Working hours
are typically 7:00 am to 5:00 pm,
primarily weekdays only. Small
and light-weight utility vehicles
are used to move materials onto
the landfill and the installers utilize
handheld power tools.
Does the array make noise?
The panel themselves do not
make noise. The inverters condition
the electricity and convert it
to AC power before delivering it
to the Norwood electric distribution
system. Solar PV arrays are
very quiet systems.
Do the panels cause glare?
No. The panels are designed
to absorb light and convert in
to energy. The panels have an
“anti-glare” coating to increase
efficiency. The glass used in PV
panels is less reflective than water
and is not expected to impact airplane
pilots or passing drivers.
Will snow, rain, or hail damage the
array?
The panels are designed to
withstand a wide range of weather
conditions, over several decades.
Rain, ice, and snow roll / melt
off the panels given the tilt. These
panels typically meet class 4 hail
testing. If a panel is damaged, the
instrumentation alerts to a fault
and the individual panel is replaced,
without affecting the production
of the other panels.
What is the life expectancy of this
system?
These panels will be in operation
for more than 25 years.
Solar panel output slowly reduces
over time (less than 1% annually).
These solar panels come with
a performance warranty for 25
years, specifically, the panels will
generate at least 80% of rated
output in year 25. Very few manufactured
products have a 25-year
warranty, and fewer still include a
performance warranty over that
time frame.
Will the grass cover remain over
the landfill and how do we ensure
environmental compliance?
Yes, the grass that currently
covers the landfill with remain.
The grass will be periodically cut,
under the current cutting schedule.
Spacing between the rows of
solar panels will allow for mowing
equipment to continue to be
used. The Town plans to engage
environmental consultant CDM-
Smith for permitting, construction
document review, inspection
during construction and any other
assistance needed to ensure compliance.
What ongoing maintenance is
involved?
Solar arrays do not require
much maintenance. The panels
themselves are solid state and
have no moving parts to wear out.
The inverters are installed at the
east edge for this site, on concrete
pads for easy access and update/
replacement as needed (typically
every 10 years).
What type of panels will be used?
We will use crystalline-silicon
panels which are both non-hazardous
and recyclable. There is an
existing and growing solar panel
recycling program in place worldwide.

Ballot Questions
Due to space, below is a short summary
of the Massachusetts Ballot Questions for
the 2018 State Election. To view all in the
information on each question in its entirety,
visit, https://www.sec.state.ma.us/ele/
ele18/ballot_questions_18/ballot_questions18.htm.
Question #1
Do you approve of a law summarized
below, on which no vote was taken by the
Senate or the House of Representatives on
or before May 2, 2018?
SUMMARY
This proposed law would limit how
many patients could be assigned to each
registered nurse in Massachusetts hospitals
and certain other health care facilities. The
maximum number of patients per registered
nurse would vary by type of unit and
level of care.
A YES VOTE would limit the number of
patients that could be assigned to one registered
nurse in hospitals and certain other
health care facilities.
A NO VOTE would make no change in
current laws relative to patient-to-nurse limits.
Question #2
Do you approve of a law summarized
below, on which no vote was taken by the
Senate or the House of Representatives on
or before May 2, 2018?
SUMMARY
This proposed law would create a citizens
commission to consider and recommend
potential amendments to the United
States Constitution to establish that corporations
do not have the same Constitutional
rights as human beings and that campaign
contributions and expenditures may be
regulated.
A YES VOTE would create a citizens
commission to advance an amendment to
the United States Constitution to limit the
influence of money in elections and establish
that corporations do not have the same
rights as human beings.
A NO VOTE would not create this commission.
Question #3
Do you approve of a law summarized
below, which was approved by the House
of Representatives and the Senate on July
7, 2016?
SUMMARY
This law adds gender identity to the list
of prohibited grounds for discrimination in
places of public accommodation, resort,
or amusement. Such grounds also include
race, color, religious creed, national origin,
sex, disability, and ancestry. A “place of
public accommodation, resort or amusement”
is defined in existing law as any place
that is open to and accepts or solicits the patronage
of the general public, such as hotels,
stores, restaurants, theaters, sports facilities,
and hospitals. “Gender identity” is defined
as a person’s sincerely held gender-related
identity, appearance, or behavior, whether
or not it is different from that traditionally
associated with the person’s physiology or
assigned sex at birth.
A YES VOTE would keep in place the current
law, which prohibits discrimination on
the basis of gender identity in places of public
accommodation.
A NO VOTE would repeal this provision
of the public accommodation law.
Call of Duty
By R. Christopher Cook
At the Norwood VFW Post #
2452, the Norfolk County Marine
Corp League meets every month.
One man, always in attendance, is
Joe Collins, and this is the story of
how he heard his call. It came on
December 28, 1965. That is the
day he received his draft notice,
a belated Merry Christmas from
Uncle Sam. Like four other men
from Charlestown, five from South
Boston and five from Dorchester,
they all received the notice on the
same day. Four weeks later, they
traveled to Parris Island for training
in the US Marines. Eight
weeks later, they were in infantry
training at Camp Legume.
Before he left home, Joe’s dad,
who was a veteran from World
War II and had served in General
Patton’s 3rd Army at the Battle
of the Bulge, gave Joe one bit of
advice: once you’re there, pay attention
to the job at hand and
don’t think about missing home.
Joe realized how important of that
guidance when only six days after
landing in Da Nang he survived
his first rocket attack. He was assigned
to an electrical engineering
unit and just did his job like dad
said.
Collins was lucky enough to
leave Viet Nam on Jan. 10, 1968
and return to Boston. Upon returning
home, he took a job working
on the drawbridge by the
Science Museum in Boston, and
then moved over to the Charlestown
Navy Yard doing electrical
work again. The yard closed in
1974 and that’s when Joe heard
the call again. He enlisted in the
Army National Guard and was
promoted from sergeant to staff
sergeant and finished his tour of
duty in 1983. I asked why he felt
the need to volunteer again. He
said there are many funny stories
about volunteering in the service.
The one he remembered and
stood out in his mind was one day
an officer came into a room full
of enlisted men. The officer asked
does anyone here know how to
type? One private raised his hand,
the officer then said, follow me.
The kid never said he could type
he just raised his hand, he was one
smart kid. He spent the rest of his
tour of duty assigned to Headquarters
and there he learned to
type.
Home once again in January
of 1984, Joe went down to Otis
Air Force Base and once again enlisted
in the Air National Guard.
Promoted to Master Sergeant he
figured sooner or later he would
get around to the Navy. He was
sent to Berlin and the wall was still
there. It didn’t come down until
1990. Years later, he shipped off to
Kuwait, and eventually on to Iraq,
where he found he was still ducking
from rockets and remembering
his dad’s advice.
In 2006, he turned 60, which is
mandatory retirement age in the
armed services. Today, he lives in
Franklin, with his wife Mary Ann,
and they have been married for 47
years. He is still very active with
various Veterans organizations,
such as the VFW and Marine
Corp League. Since he slipped by
my question the first time, I asked
again, why did you keep reenlisting?
This time he replied, because
I realized serving one’s country is
not just a privilege, it’s an honor.
Thanks for your service Joe…
Pet Corner
Hi readers...We are encouraging you to send in your questions for
Tabby to answer. Submit your questions to info@baystateanimals.org
Follow up to last month’s question regarding Kennel Cough. Several
veterinarians have recently diagnosed “kennel cough” as a result
of a tracheal bronchitis being spread around. It has been minor but
is a perfect example of a cough caused by something other than Bordetella.
Dear Tabby,
My owner recently got my dog license and I want to know if I need
to wear yet another tag on my collar and if yes, why?
Thank you,
Rebel
Dear Rebel,
Yes you do need to wear this tag and here’s why. Not only does this
tag identify that you are owned or in the case of an abandoned dog,
were owned, but it tracks down your owner to insure you get home.
It’s also required by the town you live in and your owners will be fined
if you are not licensed. The license is granted with a current rabies
certificate, though your rabies certificate might be expired by the end
of your license year, it gives a bit more assurance that you are rabies
vaccinated. Your rabies tag should also be on your collar which also
verifies you are vaccinated.
Lastly, it’s the law in Massachusetts that a dog be licensed. If you
decide to find a way to leave home and venture into the community
you will hopefully be picked up by an animal loving citizen or the local
Animal Control Officer and temporarily housed while your owner is
contacted.
Without your appropriate tags you may have to reside at a less than
“comfy” location for an entire weekend or even longer if you strayed
too far and your owners can’t find you. The Animal Control Officer
cannot release you to your owner IF you are not licensed until the appropriate
town department is open for business to provide you with a
license.
Wear your tags proudly, it could save your life!
Thoughtfully,
for their Furrever Home
Meet Mama!
Mama is a
great cat who
is timid when
she first meets
you. She takes
a bit to warm
up, but once
she does, she’s
a sweetheart.
An experienced cat human will
understand her best as her current
foster home does! Her foster family
says she is a sweet, young, female cat
that loves to talk and play. Mama,
like most felines, enjoys a good cat
nap and appreciates chin scratches
and belly rubs. Once she becomes
a true family member she will greet
you at the door with meows and
head butts. She would be fine with
other cats but also would be fine by
herself.
Hi Finbar!
Finbar is a neutered male, 4 to 6
years old. He's a bit shy and prefers
to be an "only" cat. Finbar would do
best in a home with an experienced
cat owner. He is feisty, the kind of cat
who will purr in ecstasy for 3 pats,
but then let you know he's all done
with patting. . He uses a litter box
and scratching post faithfully. Kind
of a sedentary guy, he loves sleeping
beside someone and watching cats
on You Tube clips. He hasn't had
any exposure to young children, and
he tends to hide whenever there's
any type of commotion.
Check out Mittens!
Mitten’s true past is a bit mysterious
but regardless BSAC’s affiliate
group the Brockton Cat Coalition
(BCC) was called when she was
found under a porch with kittens.
BCC rescued her and her 3 kittens
and they are all now safe in a loving
foster home.
She is petite and was malnourished
when rescued. She is welcoming
a regular meal and the love that
comes with it. Mittens loves attention
and cuddles! She co-existed
with other cats outside (who we
have also assisted) and now lives in a
foster who has a dog (no direct contact
at this time however). Consider
meeting and adopting Mittens.
Amazing SUCCESS
STORIES are what we
are all about!
Snowbelle has found her
new place to call home. She
is a beauty to look at but,
like many cats, she has “cattitude”
for reasons will never
be privvy to. She requested
an owner with patience, a
place with no other pets, and
someone who could let her
rule the roost. We found this
wonderful pre-med student
who is willing to give her the
chance she has requested.
Snowbelle should lose her
“cattitude” over time as her
new owner gives her all she
has requested. Snowbelle is
Norwood Sports
Norwood Field Hockey
By Christopher Tremblay
Your retreat for body and soul
Last fall, the Norwood field
hockey team punched their ticket
to the Division 1 South Tournament
for the seventh straight time,
posting a 9-8-1 record. While
the Mustangs have continuously
found their way into the tournament,
once there, they haven’t
fared too well. Over the previous
seven appearances, Norwood has
had five one and done games, and
capturing a total of three victories
in the other two years. Mustang
Coach Alison Doliner wants to
improve those stats this fall.
“We’ve had too many years
where we haven’t gotten out of
the first round,” the Norwood
Coach said. “This year, not only
do I want to get back to the tournament
but I want to actually do
something once we are there.”
As the Mustangs move closer
to this year’s midway point of
the season, Norwood is currently
5-2 overall, and 5-1 in their new
league (Tri Valley League, TVL).
Doliner is rather excited and
happy with the way the girls have
been competing but there are still
plenty of games in the season.
“Playing in the TVL, there is
as good balance of competition,
just as there was in the Bay State
League. The first time around has
been different as neither team really
knows much about the other
being that this is our first year
within in the league,” Doliner said.
“We are not playing our best field
hockey yet. The plan is to come in
and win right away, not to wait for
the second half of the season and
have to win to get into the tournament.”
With 12 games on the docket
as of this writing, the Mustangs
need to only win four more games
to earn a spot in the Division 1
South Tournament, but the squad
doesn’t want to settle for just four
victories.
Senior captains, Rose Campbell,
a sweeper this year, and Beth
Garczynski, who moved from a
forward to a center midfielder last
year, are confident and ready to
take the Mustangs to the next level.
Campbell will anchor the defense,
while Garczynski will control the
pace of the game in addition to
playing solid on both sides of the
ball. Campbell and Garczynski
both have been starters since their
freshman campaigns for the Mustangs.
Doliner will rely on Allie Mc-
Donough, Maggie Curran and
Allie Martin to provide the bulk of
the scoring. McDonough, a center
forward, was the team’s leading
scorer last year and currently has
10 goals and 3 assists this season,
while Curran, a sophomore wing,
has contributed 3 goals and 2 assists.
Martin, who was the team’s
first athlete off the bench last fall
and is starting for the first time, has
already knocked home 2 goals and
In the back, junior center back
Noelle Connelly has been playing
fantastic defense for Norwood,
while freshman Talia Fruci has
been minding the net with the best
of them. The first year keeper has
faced 49 shots in her first seven
games, while allowing only 8 to
get by her.
“Talia is having a phenomenal
season so far,” Doliner said.
“While the opposing teams have
49 shots on her, 21 alone came in
the Walpole game where she gave
up 2 of her 8 goals.”
Kate Rogers is the team’s backup
goalie, while the rest of the
team includes junior left mid Julie
Salviggo, freshman starting right
back Maddy Barry and starting
right mid Shannon Gover and defender
Delaney Gover (Shannon’s
twin sister). Also looking to help
Charlie Hanoian, Norwood Golf
By Christopher Tremblay
Having first picked up a golf
club around the age of three, one
would have expected Norwood’s
Charlie Hanoian to focus all his
time and energy on the greens.
The Norwood senior, however, explored
other athletic avenues since
he picked up that golf club many
years ago.
“I eventually stopped playing
golf to play all the other sports,”
Hanoian said. “Then when I was
in seventh grade I had found out
that the high school had a golf
team so I figured I’d give it another
try.”
Hanoian began practicing
religiously in hopes that he’d be
able to earn himself a spot on
the Norwood team. During the
eighth grade, would suit up for the
basketball team in the winter and
then took out his golf clubs in the
spring practicing just about every
possible day.
Eventually, he made the varsity
roster during his freshman campaign,
but not without the normal
first year jitters.
“Tryouts that freshman year
were nerve racking as I really
didn’t know what to expect,” Hanoian
said. “Besides a few friends
who also went out for the team, I
didn’t know anyone of the other
kids or how they played. The first
day I shot a 92 through 18 holes
and a 46 through nine holes on
day two. I played around my expectations,
but there was a couple
of freshman who did better than
I did.”
That freshman year, Hanoian
was an alternate on the team, but it
wasn’t a problem as he found himself
learning more about the game.
Match after match he noticed that
some of his buddies were beating
him on a regular basis. That
off-season, he dedicated himself
to playing and improving his golf
game. That freshman year he was
shooting a 46, and now three plus
years later he’s writing a 39 on his
scorecard, eliminating seven huge
strokes from his game. When he
returned to school in the fall of his
sophomore year, Hanoian had secured
the number three golfer on
the squad, and each year following
moved up. During his junior year,
he was a close second and this fall
he’s the team’s top golfer.
“Charlie takes the game seriously
and works extremely hard
not just during practice and
games, but during the offseason
as well,” Norwood Coach Chuck
Allen said. “He’s a great leader,
but is more about the team than
himself. Golf is a team sport, but
it’s the individuals who are out on
the course by themselves.”
The senior captain continually
New England
looks to work on his game no matter
what the season. When it’s too
cold and snow blankets the local
golf courses, Hanoian practiced
on an indoor simulator in Dedham
that allowed him to play
throughout the winter months
and he surprisingly found it to be
rather accurate.
As a senior captain this fall, he’s
looking to make sure all the other
golfer’s priorities are set; he believes
it is his responsibility to make
sure everyone gets to practices and
games.
“Last year was my first year as
golf coach and I have seen him
mature quite a bit since then,”
Allen said. “He’s one of our top
golfers and often goes to the other
golf courses that we are going to
play on to get a feel for the course.
If it’s private, he’ll just walk it.”
As the season continues, Hanoian
is looking for the Mustangs
to make it back to the tournament,
but do much better.
“Last year was the first time
that the golf team made the tournament
in four years and we had
a blast,” Hanoian said. “I want
to get back there and do better
than our 8th place finish out of 15
teams.”
Hanoian would also like to
make it to the individual golf
tournament this fall. Last year, he
had a rough start and his driving
put him in a hole early and he was
never able to recover. Since that
tournament, he has worked extremely
hard to improve his game
and qualifying would mean a lot to
the senior golfer.
As the Mustangs continue to
work hard and earn themselves
a return trip to the state tournament,
Hanoian is also thinking
about his future after Norwood.
As graduation creeps closer with
each passing month, the Norwood
golfer would like to pursue golf
on the collegiate level come next
fall. He has been thinking about
schools here in the north, but he is
also looking into Florida Atlantic
University, where he could play
golf year round.
Finding himself a big fan of
Tiger Woods, Hanoian looks to
his idol for guidance.
“I get my inspiration from the
professionals, like Tiger Woods,”
the Norwood senior said. “Golf
starts off mentally and then you
have to apply that to physical play.
Tiger always wants to win and in
my mind that is what I am looking
to do.”
If Hanoian and his teammates
continue to put forth a good effort
on the course, there is no reason
why they shouldn’t be able to advance
into the tournament, and
then hopefully make some noise
once there.

Run in the 32nd Annual Turkey Trot!
by Bella Caggiano
The weather may be cooler,
but those cooler temperatures do
no discourage Norwood’s running
community. The Annual Turkey
Trot is held just before the town
is stripped of its fall foliage, and
locals take the opportunity to tour
the Norwood’s neighborhoods
in this favorite pre-holiday event.
The Sunday before the grandest
meal of the year, these ambitious
athletes lace up their sneakers with
Norwood’s own pre-Thanksgiving
tradition.
The popular race will be held
on Sunday, November 18, 11 a.m.,
beginning and ending at Norwood
High School, 245 Nichols St. Preregistration
ends November 16, 7
p.m., with a $30 race fee, and $35
the day of the event. Register at
www.runsignup.com.The Kids
Trot, at 10:30 a.m., is FREE!
Once Halloween is over, the
anticipation begins to build. For
over three decades, the Turkey
Trot participants have held their
Thanksgiving cravings for the
Sunday where adults, teenagers,
kids and families "trot" their way
through the familiar streets of
their hometown. Athletes are invited
to run individually or with a
team. Young runners can even
join the event with the Kids Tot
Trot. There will be a 100-yard
dash for kids five years old and
younger and a 1/4 mile run for
kids nine years old and younger.
These events begin at 10:30 a.m.,
and are free of charge, but must
be registered at www.runsignup.
com.
The four-mile route is both
challenging and charming as it
leads runners down Nichols St.,
winding around the Willett Parkway
neighborhood and finishing
with cheering crowds at Norwood
High School. In previous years,
the race has included over 700
participants, many who call Norwood
home and some travel from
as far as Cape Cod and northern
Massachusetts. Chip timing will be
provided by Harrier Race Management.
Runners of all ages are welcome
to participate in the race and
prizes and awards are presented
to the top three male and female
runners in each age group. Longsleeve
t-shirts will also be given out
to the first 300 registered runners
and free raffles to all runners. To
top off the event, there is also a
post-race party!
Not a runner? Join in the fun
by grabbing a lawn chair and
cheering on your local athletes, especially
for homes along the race
route! Who knows, you may be
so motivated, you'll find yourself
soon training for next year's trot!
Dear Editor,
The Norwood Transcript published
a headline front page article
October 18 about “the importance
of voting yes on #3”. It is a
twisted rationale that serves to create
a sense of justice and protection
for transgender people somehow
being "deprived" in public places.
Nowhere does it give any inkling
that there is another side to this
issue. It gives these people special
privileges by taking away a
woman’s basic right to privacy. It
allows biological males to freely
use any and all private female accommodations
regardless of the
intrusion on the personal space of
biological women and girls. What
about OUR protection and OUR
rights?
On July 8, 2016, Governor Baker
signed into law a bill that eliminates
women’s right to privacy and
safety in public restrooms, lockerrooms,
showers and changing facilities.
This law allows biological
males to use any women's private
facility, bathrooms, locker rooms,
changing rooms, gyms, spas, etc.
simply because they "identify" as
female. It gives the same rights to
predators and sex offenders. And
if you complain about it, you can
face a fine of up to $50,000 or a
year in jail for doing so. Ladies,
we have given up our right to privacy!
Are we crazy? This means
our daughters are at risk of being
preyed upon as well. Recently a
case was made by a man who was
refused a "bikini wax" at a women's
spa!
If transgender people need special
accommodation, let them have a
private generic restroom that anyone
can use, but one person at a
time!
We have a right to privacy. We
have always had it until our state
and our governor signed it away
in 2016. This is our chance to take
it back. We can vote to have this
law repealed. VOTE NO ON
QUESTION 3!!!!!
Register O’Donnell Delivers 3rd Quarter 2018 Real
Estate Activity Report
Register of Deeds William P.
O’Donnell noted that there were
mixed results when it came to the
Norfolk County housing market
for the recently concluded third
quarter.
“The total number of real estate
sales in Norfolk County during
July through September for
both residential and commercial
property was 5,157, which was
only a 1% increase from the previous
year,” O’Donnell noted. “This
sluggishness stems from a continued
lack of inventory to meet the
needs of the market. It has been
a problem now for a considerable
period of time and has caused
hardship for those looking to buy
properties, especially for first-time
homeowners.”
Also, the Register mentioned
that the total dollar real estate sales
volume, again for both residential
and commercial real estate, increased
by a significant 15% to
$2.5 billion. Additionally, the average
property sale price for the
quarter was $728,692, an 11%
increase year over year.
Mortgage activity declined in
the 3rd quarter. There were 6,621
mortgages recorded compared to
7,300 during the same time period
in 2017. Additionally, total
mortgage borrowing fell by 65%
to $2.7 billion. However, this number
was dramatically skewed by a
$1.6 billion mortgage taken out
against a commercial property in
Weymouth during the 3rd quarter
2017. Another key factor in the
reduction of mortgage borrowing,
noted Register O’Donnell, were
the small but noticeable hikes in
interest rates.
On the consumer front, there
was a 1% increase in the number
of Homesteads recorded during
the 3rd quarter. A total of 3,572
Homesteads were recorded compared
to 3,543 year over year.
“A Homestead provides limited
protection against the forced sale
of an individual’s primary residence
to satisfy unsecured debt up
to $500,000,” O’Donnell said. “I
urge Norfolk County residents to
consider this important consumer
protection tool.”
Foreclosure activity was mixed
during the 3rd quarter. The total
number of foreclosure deeds
recorded was 63, a small 3% increase
year over year. The numbers
were more sobering with
Notice to Foreclose Mortgage
filings, the first step in the foreclosure
process. There were 127
Notice to Foreclose Mortgages
recorded during the quarter, a
24.5% increase year over year.
“I continue to be concerned
with the number of foreclosure
filings,” O’Donnell said. “The
Registry of Deeds continues to
work with Quincy Community
Action Programs, 617-479-8181
x376, and NeighborWorks Southern
Mass, 508-587-0950 to help
homeowners who have received a
Notice to Foreclose Mortgage document.
A third option is to contact
the Massachusetts Attorney General’s
Consumer Advocacy and
Response Division (CARD) at
617-727-8400.”
“Ongoing issues with available
inventory are causing prospective
buyers to pay increased amounts
for real estate,” O’Donnell concluded.
“These prices are having
an adverse impact on first-time
home buyers who are trying to
purchase property at an affordable
cost. Furthermore, the recent
increases in interest rate by the
Fed may cause consumers to think
twice before borrowing money
and going further in debt.”
Real Estate
By Bella Caggiano
Is this a good time to list a
house in Norwood? It is getting
too late for the holidays? What if
I wait until spring, will the market
turn by then? These are just some
of the questions local homeowners
may ask themselves. The answers,
however, are not always clear.
The holidays are quickly approaching
and concerns arise as
to the amount and seriousness of
potential homebuyers at this time
of year. Then there are the difficulties
of having showings with
decorations, company visiting and
demanding schedules. The quick
answer is, yes. There are still many
buyers anxiously waiting daily for
new listings to enter the market.
They are willing to move in December,
so homeowners only need
to commit to showings, packing,
and moving before the end of the
year.
Interest rates have recently
crept up, and should they experience
any more increases, the
spring market could greatly affect
housing prices and buyers may not
be able to afford as much house
later as they do today.
Comparing year to year statistics,
inventory is down from October
of last year which is following
the Norfolk Country trend of few
houses on the market to accommodate
the entry of Norwood
buyers into the local market. Bottom
line, if you are thinking and
ready to sell, dive in, the water is
still very warm.
