Scenes from last season’s festival
Welcome to the 2018-2019 Greater Naples
Jewish Book Festival!
The Jewish Book Festival Committee is pleased to present 25 amazing authors
in 16 exciting programs from October 2018 through April 2019.
While we thought it would be difficult to top last year’s group of authors and
events, we think that once you flip through the pages of this brochure, you’ll
agree that this season’s lineup is our best ever.
We kick off the festival with several extraordinary speakers and personalities,
including comedian Carol Leifer, actor Stephen Tobolowsky, financial expert
Jean Chatzky and Dr. Michael Roizen. Whether your book choices are fiction,
memoirs, humor, Israel or entertainment, you’ll find several programs to whet
your appetite.
Similar to last season’s festival, look for more than just book talks. Enjoy these
cultural highlights:

A singer and pianist will perform several Leonard Bernstein hits as part of
Jamie Bernstein’s presentation about “Growing Up Bernstein.”

Jewish Comedy Night with author Jeremy Dauber will feature several local
residents performing stand-up Jewish comedy routines. Be sure to come
and cheer them on.

As part of the program with author Beverly Gray discussing Seduced
by Mrs. Robinson, enjoy a screening of the 50 th anniversary edition of
The Graduate.

Delight in a luncheon program with Jeff Oliver, a former executive at
Food Network, where he developed the hit series Cutthroat Kitchen.
As coordinator for what has become the Greater Naples Jewish community’s
most-talked-about program, I am honored to work on this incredible festival
with co-chairs Phil Jason, Susan Pittelman and Robin Mintz (pictured at left
with author Bryan Mark Rigg), our devoted festival committee members, and
Federation Community Program Coordinator Reneé Bialek. We each devote
hundreds of hours to ensure we meet the festival’s mission (see below).
The book festival would not be possible without numerous people and
organizations. First and foremost, recognition must go to the Jewish Federation
of Greater Naples and its leadership, including Jeffrey Feld and Jane Schiff.
Special thanks to our Patrons, whose generosity and support are a testament to
our amazing community. We couldn’t produce such an extensive festival without
our financial and in-kind Sponsors. Covering a broad range of companies and
organizations from both the Jewish and the Greater Naples community, their
support is greatly appreciated. And much gratitude goes to our incredible volunteers
who help to assure that every aspect of every program runs smoothly.
I invite you to join us at this season’s Jewish Book Festival as we celebrate
and enjoy amazing authors, talents, characters and stories!
Warmly,
Ted Epstein, Coordinator, Greater Naples Jewish Book Festival
Praise for this season’s festival authors and books
“They don’t make people funnier or more clever
than Carol Leifer. She’s insightful, big-hearted and a
brilliant writer.”
– J. J. Abrams, film director, producer, screenwriter,
actor and composer
“Carol’s gift is that she sees ordinary, everyday things
in a very funny way. She’s made other comics say,
‘Why didn’t I think of that?’”
– Jay Leno, comedian, actor, writer, producer and
television host
“Stephen Tobolowsky has found his true calling as a
storyteller. He is candid, insightful, often profound
and very, very funny. By blending sharp memories of
his childhood with astute, adult observations of the
world around him, he weaves a spell not unlike Jean
Shepherd or Garrison Keillor… but he has a voice all
his own, and I love it.”
– Leonard Maltin, film critic and author
“Izzy Ezagui may be the most inspirational figure
you’ll meet. Gruesomely wounded as a volunteer
soldier, he allows nothing to stop his quest to return to
a normal life. That he tells his story with irreverence
and laugh-out-loud humor makes reading Disarmed
a joy. People thrown by lesser obstacles will benefit
from reading this moving and triumphant story.”
– Seth M. Siegel, author of New York Times bestseller
Let There Be Water
“Martin Fletcher, who headed up NBC TV’s Tel Aviv
News Bureau, knows his territory and it shows on
every page. Promised Land is a great sweeping epic,
reminiscent of Leon Uris’ Exodus; a moving story
of triumph and tragedy, new love and historic hate,
expertly told by a cast of unforgettable characters.
Fletcher’s writing rises to the level of importance that
this story demands and deserves. Historical novels
don’t get much better than Promised Land.”
– Nelson DeMille, #1 New York Times bestselling
author of The Cuban Affair
“Today Show financial expert Jean Chatzky and Cleveland
Clinic chief wellness officer Dr. Michael Roizen,
with Ted Spiker, find vital connections between health
and wealth, A positive, practical book for anyone
middle aged or older.”
– Library Journal
“Beautifully written, A Father’s Story is a moving
and gripping account of how a father transformed
his grief over the murder of his daughter into a quest
for spiritual meaning and – though opposed by even
elements of his own country’s government – a fierce
battle against the scourge of Islamic terror. A reminder
of the importance of belief and principle in a world
that often seems to have forgotten.”
– Daniel Gordis, author of Israel: A Concise History
of a Nation Reborn
“For those of you who like food and reality TV, this
book will make your mouth water and smile simultaneously.
Oliver has cooked up a fresh perspective on
the possibility of a terrorist-turned-cheftestant, with
a dash of humor and wit!”
– Andy Cohen, host and Executive producer of Watch
What Happens Live With Andy Cohen
“Gregory J. Wallance’s beautifully written and meticulously
researched account of Sarah Aaronsohn’s
leadership of the Nili spy network during World War
I casts a long overdue spotlight on one of the most
fascinating personalities of the early Zionist era and
should be required reading for anyone interested in
modern Jewish history.”
– Ronald S. Lauder, president of the World Jewish
Congress
“Growing up in the presence of a super famous
parent is no easy thing. Jamie Bernstein presents an
undisguised and understanding picture of her father,
family and friends. She chronicles her emergence as
a partisan of ideals in which they believed. The book
is full of inside stories and personal perspectives on
the inspiring, spontaneous and often no-holds-barred
challenges of Bernstein’s multiple worlds.”
– Michael Tilson Thomas, American conductor, pianist
and composer
“Perhaps the greatest compliment I can bestow on
this accomplished and compelling book is to say that
Gray will send you rushing to Netflix to watch The
Graduate again, and when you do, you will see a
familiar movie in an entirely new way.”
– Jewish Journal
“Cove has a light touch and an eye for regional
and temporal detail… Most who either recall or are
curious about this free-loving period of history will
find themselves satisfied by Cove’s re-creation of his
journey out of boyhood.”
– Kirkus Reviews
“In this brilliant and groundbreaking book, Jeremy
Dauber shows that Jerry Seinfeld and Sarah Silverman
are just the latest members of an ancient tradition of
Jewish humor that stretches all the way back to the
Bible. Writing with dazzling scholarly insight and in
a style as appealing as his subject, Dauber reveals
what made Jews laugh over the centuries. In doing
so, he tells a crucial part of the story of Judaism.”
– Adam Kirsch, author of The People and the Books
Praise for this season’s festival authors and books
“This book is beautiful and brilliant. The substance of
Elie Wiesel’s teaching will always be with us. Now,
thanks to Ariel Burger – a writer of great spiritual
and intellectual integrity – we have access to the way
Wiesel taught generations of students, not only
through his words but in the way he lived his life
and held his relationships. Wiesel was a treasure of
true humanity in the face of unspeakable suffering.”
– Parker J. Palmer, author of On the Brink of Everything
and The Courage to Teach
“Sarvas’s rich and engaging second novel is worth
the decade’s wait since his first... Sarvas couples
a suspenseful mystery with nuanced meditations
on father-son bonds, the intricacies of identity, the
aftershocks of history’s horrors, and the ways people
and artworks can – perhaps even must – be endlessly
reinterpreted.”
– Publishers Weekly
“Erbelding writes vividly of intrigue and espionage,
secret negotiations, money laundering, ransoming of
victims, and rescue ships... Erbelding’s history is an
important contribution to understanding America’s
humanitarian efforts during and after WWII and a
timely perspective, given questions about today’s
world crises.”
– Booklist
“The Intermission deftly pulls apart the puzzle of one
couple’s marriage and lays the pieces bare, posing the
question: Would you walk away from your marriage
in order to save it? A provocative, insightful look at
the intricacies of marriage, the role of fate, and the
unpredictable nature of love.”
– Jamie Brenner, bestselling author of The Husband
Hour
“This exquisitely crafted and compassionate novel
offers a lesson in honesty, regardless of how difficult
the truth may be. It will offer plenty of discussion for
book groups.”
– Library Journal
“Long renowned as a master of historical fiction,
Alyson Richman spreads her wings and soars with
the contemporary story… The Secret of Clouds is an
unforgettable gift.”
– Pam Jenoff, New York Times bestselling author of
The Orphan’s Tale
“A mysterious collection of papers hidden in a historic
London home sends two scholars of Jewish history
on an unforgettable quest... Kadish’s characters are
memorable, and we’re treated to a host of them: pious
rabbis and ribald actors, socialites and troubled young
men, Mossad agents and rule-worshipping archivists.
From Shakespeare’s Dark Lady to Spinoza’s philosophical
heresies, Kadish leaves no stone unturned in
this moving historical epic. Chock-full of rich detail
and literary intrigue.”
– Kirkus Reviews
“Tova Mirvis has already established herself as a
first-rate novelist with The Ladies Auxiliary, The
Outside World and Visible City. With The Book of
Separation: A Memoir, Mirvis shifts genres, reveals
some of the autobiographical germs of her fiction,
and compellingly chronicles the process of separating
from Orthodoxy... The respect for intra-Jewish
difference that Mirvis models for her children – and
for readers – is a precious gift to the Jewish literary
world... Beautiful and poignant.”
– Lilith magazine
“With warmth, intelligence and a wryly humane
voice, Carol Zoref gives us an unforgettable heroine
and shines a light on a forgotten chapter of the American
story. Richly atmospheric and deeply tender,
Barren Island is a thought-provoking pleasure.”
– Brian Morton, author of Starting Out in the Evening
and Florence Gordon
“The book offers practical advice, interesting narratives,
and a sound perspective on how to change
one’s viewpoint from drudgery to exploring an older
adult’s wealth of knowledge and experience in a
positive manner.”
– Portland Book Review
“Nuanced, sharp and beautifully written, Sadness Is
a White Bird manages, with seeming effortlessness,
to find something fresh and surprising and poignant
in the classic coming-of-age, love-triangle narrative,
something starker, more heartbreaking: something
new.”
– Michael Chabon, novelist and short story writer
“Graceful, instructive, wry speechwriter memoirs
like Litt’s are the exception rather than the norm...
Thanks, Obama will join the ranks of lasting works
about the texture of political life, and of coming-ofage
accounts by staffers who grow up personally and
politically at the same time.”
Famous Father Girl: A Memoir of Growing Up Bernstein
7:00 - 9:30 pm • Hilton Naples
Sponsored by TheatreZone,
Dr. Barrett Ross Ginsberg
and Steinway Piano Gallery
The oldest daughter of revered composer/conductor Leonard Bernstein offers a rare
look at her father on the centennial of his birth in a deeply intimate and broadly evocative
memoir. In Famous Father Girl, Bernstein mines the emotional depths of her
childhood, and invites us into her family’s private world. A fantastic set of characters
populates the Bernsteins’ lives, including the Kennedys, John Lennon, Mike Nichols,
Jerome Robbins, Richard Avedon, Stephen Sondheim and Lauren Bacall. The memoir
is an intoxicating tale and an intimate meditation on a complex
and sometimes troubled man, the family he raised, and the music
he composed that became the soundtrack to their entwined
lives. Deeply moving and often hilarious, Bernstein’s beautifully
written memoir is a great American story about one of the greatest Americans of the modern age.
Jamie Bernstein is a writer, broadcaster and filmmaker. She travels the world as a concert
narrator. Her documentary Crescendo: The Power of Music is available on Netflix.
Lou Cove
Man of the Year
10:00 am - noon • Unitarian Univ. Cong.
Sponsored by Naples Jewish Congregation
Jamie’s passages will be
brought to musical life by a singer
and pianist performing several
Leonard Bernstein hits.
1978 promised to be another year of dislocation for 12-year-old Lou Cove, the eighth
move in his short life. His free-thinking Jewish family had just left New York behind
for working-class Salem, Massachusetts, a town not far evolved beyond the witch
trials that made its name – hardly the place for a long-haired
Mets fan on the cusp of his Bar Mitzvah. And that was before
the arrival of Howie Gordon: actor, artist, hippie, lover and
Playgirl’s Mr. November. Howie has Hollywood ambitions
and a highly unorthodox idea for achieving them: be named
Playgirl Man of the Year, 1979. When he enlists Lou as his
“campaign manager,” the unlikely duo embarks on a quest
to win the hearts and minds of the witches and wharf rats of
Salem. Man of the Year is the improbable true story of Lou’s
13 th year, one very unusual campaign and the unexpected
guest who taught him how to be a man. A fresh twist on the
coming-of-age memoir, yes, but also a tale of lost innocence.
Lou Cove is an author and a fundraising advisor. He has raised more than $70 million, mostly for Jewish causes. Lou is
Senior Advisor at the Harold Grinspoon Foundation and PJ Library, and was Executive Director of Reboot, a think-tank
and incubator for modern Jewish culture, and Vice President of the National Yiddish Book Center.
Seduced by Mrs. Robinson – How The Graduate
Became the Touchstone of a Generation
1:00 - 4:30 pm • Sugden Community Theatre
Sponsored by The Naples Players
and Women’s Cultural Alliance
Beverly will speak briefly before
the film screening, pointing out a
few things to keep in mind that she
will discuss after the film. She will
also clue us in as to what makes
The Graduate a Jewish film.
Includes
screening of
The Graduate
When The Graduate premiered in December 1967, its filmmakers had modest expectations
for what seemed to be a small, sexy art-house comedy. There was little indication that
this offbeat story – a young man just out of college has an affair with one of his parents’
friends and then runs off with her daughter – would turn out to
be a monster hit with seven Academy Award nominations. While
turning the word “plastics” into shorthand for soulless work and
a corporate, consumer culture, The Graduate sparked a national
debate about “the generation gap.” Beverly Gray offers a smart
close reading of the film itself as well as never-before-revealed
details from behind the scenes. Seduced by Mrs. Robinson brings
to light The Graduate’s influence on the future of filmmaking
and explores how it rocked the late-sixties world, reflecting and
changing the era’s views of sex, work and marriage.
Beverly Gray is the author of the highly-acclaimed biographies
of Roger Corman and Ron Howard. She spent nearly a decade in the film industry as Roger
Corman’s story editor. She has covered the entertainment industry for the Hollywood
Reporter and leads screenwriting workshops for UCLA Extension’s Writers’ Program.
Jewish Comedy Night
with Author Jeremy Dauber
Jewish Comedy – A Serious History
7:00 - 9:30 pm • Hilton Naples
Sponsored by Clive Daniel Home
and Men’s Cultural Alliance
This event opens
with local Jewish community
members doing stand-up
Jewish comedy! Come out and
support them!
In a major work of scholarship that is both erudite and very funny, Jeremy Dauber
traces the origins of Jewish comedy and its development from biblical times to the
age of Twitter. Readers will encounter comic masterpieces ranging from Talmudic
rabbi jokes to medieval skits, Yiddish satires and Borscht Belt routines to scenes from
Seinfeld. Dauber also explores the rise and fall of popular comic archetypes such as the
Jewish mother, the Jewish American princess and the schlemiel; and classic works of
such masters of Jewish comedy as Sholem Aleichem, the Marx Brothers, Philip Roth,
Sarah Silverman, Larry David and many others. Jewish Comedy is a rich account of
Jewish humor: its nature, its development and its vital role throughout history.
Jeremy Dauber is the Atran Professor of Yiddish Language, Literature and Culture
at Columbia University, and the author of several books on Jewish literature, including
a biography of Sholem Aleichem that was a finalist for the National Jewish
Book Award.
Jeremy will tell the history of Jewish comedy through five jokes,
one of which, he says, is the funniest Jewish joke of all time.
Two Inspiring Israel-Related Stories
1:00 - 3:30 pm • Temple Shalom
Izzy Ezagui • Disarmed
Sponsored by JNF, FIDF,
John R. Wood Properties and
Temple Shalom Men’s Club
Combining refreshing candor with self-deprecating wit, this inspiring memoir
will encourage readers to live up to their aspirations despite seemingly impossible
odds. On January 8, 2009, Izzy Ezagui – an American who had enlisted
in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) at 19 – lost his arm in a mortar attack on the
border of the Gaza Strip. In this stirring and wryly humorous memoir, Ezagui
recounts his tortuous trek through rehabilitation to re-enlistment as a squad
commander in the IDF. His message is universal: if a self-described “nerd”
and “one-armed basket case” like him can accomplish what he set his mind
to, then anyone can become a hero in his or her own life.
Izzy Ezagui, a decorated squad commander in the IDF, is the only soldier in
the world who lost an arm in combat and returned to the battlefield.
Martin Fletcher • Promised Land
The tumultuous early years of the young Jewish state are brought to vivid life
through the eyes of two German Jewish brothers. Arie survived the Holocaust
in Europe. Peter, one year older, was chosen for the Kindertransport and sent
to America. They find each other in Israel, knowing everyone else in their
family has been murdered. Peter becomes a top Mossad agent. Arie becomes a
scheming businessman, among the richest men in Israel. Having fallen in love
with the same woman, a Jewish refugee from Egypt, the brothers’ jealousies
and intrigues are mirrored by the young nation’s very own struggles to survive.
Martin Fletcher spent many years as the NBC News Bureau Chief in Tel Aviv,
and has won numerous awards including the National Jewish Book Award,
a Columbia University DuPont Award and five Emmys.

Stephen M. Flatow • A Father’s Story
Two Authors Share Their Personal and Inspiring Stories
1:00 - 3:30 pm • Naples Conference Center
Ariel Burger • Witness
Sponsored by Wollman,
Gehrke & Associates, P.A.
Stephen M. Flatow says he was “just a real estate lawyer in New Jersey” – until
April 9, 1995 – the day he learned his daughter Alisa, a 20-year-old college
student traveling in Israel, had been the victim of a terrorist bus-bombing.
After he discovered the Iranian government had directly sponsored the bomber,
Flatow decided to sue the terrorist state. Working with a Washington lawyer
and an astute forensic researcher, Flatow not only won a dramatic verdict
against Iran, but collected a huge judgment. A Father’s Story recalls the events
surrounding his successful lawsuit.
Stephen M. Flatow is a lawyer in New Jersey. His successful lawsuit against
Iran is legendary throughout the international legal community. This is his
memoir. A major motion picture based on Flatow’s life is in development.
Gregory J. Wallance • The Woman Who Fought an Empire
The Woman Who Fought an Empire is the improbable but true odyssey of a
bold young woman – the daughter of Romanian-born Jewish settlers in Palestine
– who became the daring leader of a Middle East spy ring. Following
the outbreak of World War I, Sarah and her ring of Nili spies operated behind
enemy lines to furnish vital information to British intelligence in Cairo. She
was caught and tortured by the Turks in the fall of 1917. To protect her secrets,
Sarah, who was only 27, shot herself. Set at the birth of the modern Middle East,
her story is both an espionage thriller and the tale of the Jewish Joan of Arc.
Gregory J. Wallance is a lawyer and writer in New York City. He is the
author of Papa’s Game, about the theft of the French Connection heroin,
which received a nonfiction nomination for an Edgar Allan Poe Award.
Sponsored by Dr. Barrett Ross Ginsberg and
The Holocaust Museum & Cohen Ed. Ctr. of SWFL
Ariel Burger first met Holocaust survivor and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Elie
Wiesel Wiesel at age 15. They studied and taught together. Witness chronicles
the intimate conversations between these two men over decades, as Burger
sought counsel while navigating his own personal journey. In this hopeful,
thought-provoking and inspiring book, Burger takes us into Elie Wiesel’s
classroom, where the art of listening and storytelling conspire to keep memory
alive. As Wiesel’s teaching assistant, Burger gives us a front-row seat in and
out of the classroom, sharing these stories, making us, the readers, witnesses.
Ariel Burger is a teacher, artist, lecturer and rabbi. He worked in the education-innovation
sector for many years and now lectures and leads workshops
on spirituality, creativity and social change.
Rebecca Erbelding • Rescue Board
Rescue Board tells the unknown story of the War Refugee Board, FDR’s unpublicized
effort to save Jews. In January 1944, a Treasury lawyer named John
Pehle convinced FDR to create the Board. Over the next 20 months, Pehle
pulled together D.C. pencil pushers, international relief workers, smugglers
and millionaires to run operations across four continents. They tricked Nazis,
forged papers, recruited spies, laundered money, and funneled millions of
dollars into Europe. The War Refugee Board saved tens of thousands of lives.
Rebecca Erbelding is an archivist, curator and historian at the U.S. Holocaust
Memorial Museum in D.C. She has a PhD in American history from George
Mason University. Her work has been profiled in The Washington Post, The New
York Times, The New Yorker, on the History Channel, NPR and other outlets.
Jenna Blum • The Lost Family
The Lost Family features a husband devastated by grief he cannot voice, a
frustrated wife competing with a ghost she cannot banish, and a daughter
sensitive to the pain of her family and another family that was lost before she
was born. Spanning three cinematic decades, The Lost Family is a charming,
funny, elegantly bittersweet study of loss and love.
Jenna Blum is one of Oprah’s Top Thirty Women Writers. Her first novel,
Those Who Save Us, won the Ribalow Prize, awarded by Hadassah magazine
and adjudged by Elie Wiesel. Blum interviewed Holocaust survivors for the
Four Fabulous Fiction Authors
9:30 am - 12:00 pm • Naples Conf. Ctr.
Carol Zoref • Barren Island
Barren Island begins with the arrival of the Eisenstein family, immigrants from
Eastern Europe, and then explores how the political and social upheavals of the
1930s affect them and their neighbors in the years between the stock market
crash of October 1929 and the start of World War II ten years later. Labor strife,
union riots, the New Deal, the World’s Fair, and the struggle to save European
Jews from the growing threat of Nazi terror inform this novel as much as the
explosion of civil and social liberties between the two world wars. Barren
Island is a novel in which the existence of God is argued with a God that may
no longer exist or, perhaps, never did. It is a novel of place and passion.
Carol Zoref is an award-winning fiction writer and essayist. She teaches at
Sarah Lawrence College and New York University.
Moriel Rothman-Zecher • Sadness Is a White Bird
In this lyrical and searing debut novel, a young Israeli must reconcile his close
relationship with two Palestinian siblings and his deeply ingrained loyalties to
family and country. Moving back to Israel at age 18, Jonathan is eager to join
the army and defend the Jewish state his grandfather helped establish. But when
he meets Nimreen and Laith, his worldview is altered. And then a fateful day
arrives that lands him in prison and changes all three lives forever. Sadness
Is a White Bird is the story of one man’s attempts to find a place for himself,
discovering a beautiful against-the-odds love that flickers like a candle in the
darkness of a never-ending conflict.
Moriel Rothman-Zecher is an American Israeli writer, poet and novelist.
He is the recipient of a 2017 MacDowell Colony Fellowship for Literature.
Fiction Day Continues
Mark Sarvas • Memento Park
Elyssa Friedland • The Intermission
Told from the alternating perspectives of a husband and wife who both have
something to hide, The Intermission tunnels beneath a seemingly happy marriage
to ask: How much do we really know about the people we love the most?
Cass and Jonathan’s story examines how class and religious differences can
become devastating pressure points. As the months pass, the couple begins
to see that the worst of their problems are rooted in the personal and cultural
history that separates them – and in certain blistering secrets they may never
be ready to share.
Elyssa Friedland served as managing editor of the Yale Daily News, and is
a graduate of Columbia Law School. Her debut novel was Love and Miss
Communication.
After receiving an unexpected call from the Australian consulate, Matt Santos
becomes aware of a painting he believes was looted from his family in Hungary
during World War II. To recover the painting, he must repair his strained relationship
with his judgmental father, uncover his family history, and restore his
connection to his own Judaism. Matt’s narrative is as much about family history
and father-son dynamics as it is about the nature of art itself, and the infinite
ways we come to understand ourselves through it. Of all the questions asked
about family, art, history and spirituality – a central, unanswerable predicament
lingers: How do we move forward when the past looms unreasonably large?
Mark Sarvas is the author of the novel Harry, Revised, which was published
in more than a dozen countries.
Chapter of Hadassh
Set in London in both the 1660s and the early 21 st century, The Weight of Ink
an emigrant from Amsterdam who is permitted to scribe for a blind rabbi, just
before the plague hits the city; and Helen Watt, an ailing historian with a love
of Jewish history. Electrifying and ambitious, sweeping in scope and intimate
in tone, The Weight of Ink is a sophisticated work of historical fiction about
women separated by centuries, and the choices and sacrifices they must make
in order to reconcile the life of the heart and mind.
Marc E. Agronin • The End of Old Age
Old age is too often defined as a time of loss and decline. In The End of Old Age,
Dr. Marc Agronin presents a more hopeful view of the aging process through
inspiring stories of a Holocaust survivor who journeys back to Auschwitz each
year with Jewish students, a famous aging artist who reinvented himself after
nearly dying, as well as through other individuals. The End of Old Age concludes
with a practical action plan to help readers identify and leverage their
own emerging strengths to live with greater purpose and meaning.
Dr. Marc Agronin is a renowned geriatric psychiatrist who directs the memory
center and research program at Miami Jewish Health. He has written ten
other books on related subjects as well as articles for The New York Times and
The Wall Street Journal.
Sponsored by
Naples Senior Center at JFCS
At age 24, David Litt became one of the youngest White House speechwriters
in history. Along with issues like climate change and criminal justice reform,
he was the president’s go-to writer for comedy. As the lead writer on the White
was responsible for some of President Obama’s most memorable moments. Litt
takes us inside his eight years on the front lines of Obamaworld. His behindthe-scenes
anecdotes answer questions you never knew you had: What’s the
classiest White House men’s room? How do you force the National Security
Council to stop hitting “reply-all” on every email?
David Litt, in addition to writing for the White House, has written for The
