She will also clue us in as to what makes The Graduate a Jewish film. Includes screening of The Graduate When The Graduate premiered in December 1967, its filmmakers had modest expectations for what seemed to be a small, sexy art-house comedy. There was little indication that this offbeat story – a young man just out of college has an affair with one of his parents’ friends and then runs off with her daughter – would turn out to be a monster hit with seven Academy Award nominations. While turning the word “plastics” into shorthand for soulless work and a corporate, consumer culture, The Graduate sparked a national debate about “the generation gap.” Beverly Gray offers a smart close reading of the film itself as well as never-before-revealed details from behind the scenes. Seduced by Mrs. Robinson brings to light The Graduate’s influence on the future of filmmaking and explores how it rocked the late-sixties world, reflecting and changing the era’s views of sex, work and marriage. Beverly Gray is the author of the highly-acclaimed biographies of Roger Corman and Ron Howard. She spent nearly a decade in the film industry as Roger Corman’s story editor. In a major work of scholarship that is both erudite and very funny, Jeremy Dauber traces the origins of Jewish comedy and its development from biblical times to the age of Twitter. Readers will encounter comic masterpieces ranging from Talmudic rabbi jokes to medieval skits, Yiddish satires and Borscht Belt routines to scenes from Seinfeld. Dauber also explores the rise and fall of popular comic archetypes such as the Jewish mother, the Jewish American princess and the schlemiel; and classic works of such masters of Jewish comedy as Sholem Aleichem, the Marx Brothers, Philip Roth, Sarah Silverman, Larry David and many others. Jewish Comedy is a rich account of Jewish humor: its nature, its development and its vital role throughout history. Jeremy Dauber is the Atran Professor of Yiddish Language, Literature and Culture at Columbia University, and the author of several books on Jewish literature, including a biography of Sholem Aleichem that was a finalist for the National Jewish Book Award. Jeremy will tell the history of Jewish comedy through five jokes, one of which, he says, is the funniest Jewish joke of all time. $25 in advance • $35 at the door includes beverage and light snacks prior to Jeremy’s presentation
