you how to write each letter.
The arrows and numbers will show
you the order to follow.
arrows to write the letter.
Helpful Tips
Writing Legibly
When writing you want to make sure
the letters and numbers are easy to
read. This is what legible means.
There are four types of tips that you
will see in this book:
Size – Follow the guidelines
to keep capital letters tall and
lowercase letters on the baseline.
Shape – Using careful strokes
to draw the shapes helps
improve legibility.
Slant – Writing the slants at a
good angle makes the letters
easy to read.
Spacing – Letters and words
should not be touching or too
far apart.
Helpful Tips
Letter size
Write using short letters
that reach the midline or
tall letters that reach the
headline. Some letters
descend below the
baseline.
• Draw a heart around a
short letter.
• Cross out a tall letter.
• Circle a letter that
goes below the
baseline.
3
Using basic strokes, you
can make shapes that
are easy to read.
• Circle a letter that has
a circular line.
• Draw a line above
any letter that has a
vertical line
• Put a star in front of
any letter that has a
slanted line
• Draw an X through
any letter that has a
horizontal line
• Use the opposite hand
to move the paper.
• Place the paper in the
right direction.
• Sit up straight, arms
Letter spacing
Letters shouldn’t be
scrunched or too
far apart.
• Review the spacing
as you write.
• Allow space for
your pinky finger in
between words.
• Keep letters close,
not tight.
13

Follow the guidelines
There are four basic guidelines: Writing lines,
capital letters, lowercase letters and numbers.
Writing Lines
There are three lines: Skyline, midline and baseline.
Skyline
Midline
Baseline
Capital Letters
Capital letters sit on the bottom line, the baseline. They touch the top line, the skyline.
14

Spot Check
When you see the SPOT
CHECK icon on the right
side of the line, circle the
best letter from that line.
Lowercase Letters
Some small lowercase letters only reach to the middle line, the midline. Letters below
the line touch the midline and extend below the baseline. Tall letters reach the skyline.
Numbers
Numbers sit on the baseline and reach the skyline. This is true for all numerals.
15

THE LITTLE NEST
A little picture haunts me;
It comes and comes again;
It is a tiny bird’s nest,
All wet from the rain.
It clings in a birch tree
Upon the water’s edge,
Between the branches,
High above the hedges.
The sky is gray behind it,
And when the winds blow,
The tree shivers,
And tosses to and fro.
I wonder, does it haunt them,
The birds that flew away?
And will they come to seek it,
Some sunny summer day?
Evaleen Stein
Pick two lines from the poem to rewrite.
17

Write this story in your
best handwriting.
I froze in place,
bees swarming around me.
The big net I was wearing,
would keep the bees away.
18

Write the next four lines
of the story below.
Once a fuzzy creature,
without beauty and grace.
Bees fly in songlike harmony,
in all of time and space.
