WELCOME TO FALL FEST!
Dear Friends,
Over 37 years ago, a few of us thought
we could find better ways to foster
family self-reliance, health and
restored environments in places like
Trenton.
How best to meet that mission?
Plan alongside neighbors, grow fresh
food in community gardens, build
energy-efficient healthy homes and
parks, create ways to save and
build financial assets, convert old
factories to public uses, train disconnected youth and adults for green
jobs, and clean up dangerous toxins that poison children and seniors.
We start with a premise: families are capable and eager to improve
their own lives and communities.
But we’ve learned that challenges facing under-resourced cities
don’t stop at their borders. Our suburbs now experience the same
pressures, so the whole region needs to be in this, together.
Isles’ Social Profit Center helps bridge those old boundaries. Isles has
made this massive investment so that social, environmental and arts
organizations can co-locate in a beautiful, high performing common
place. Affordable to organizations, companies and artists now and
into the future, the Center enables groups to work together in more
thoughtful, effective and powerful ways. The whole region benefits.
To succeed, we have to be audacious and effective, but we also rely on
friends and supporters like you. Thank you for being here tonight and
for all you do to make this work possible. It takes more than a village –
it takes a region, focused on its opportunities to make a difference.
In community,
2018 FALL FEST TRIBUTE
Paul and Anke Volcker
Former Chairman
United States Federal Reserve
VOLCKER DONORS
The following supporters have donated to Isles
in honor of Paul and Anke Volcker
Paul Volcker, Sr. served Business Administrator of Teaneck, New Jersey from
1930–1950. Highly regarded as a no-nonsense public servant and civic leader,
he took the town’s finances from bankruptcy to surplus. Later, he traveled to
Trenton and created New Jersey government’s first statewide housing fund.
His son, Paul Volcker, Jr. brought this ethically grounded, public spirit to his life
and career. At Princeton, he wrote a senior thesis, encouraged by his advisor
Frank Graham, that questioned post-WW2 federal policy on inflation. He was
later appointed by President Carter to be Chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve,
where he served from 1979–1987. He implemented the Community Reinvestment
Act, resulting in vital bank reinvestment in lower income communities.
In 2008, Paul Chaired President Obama’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board,
helping to create the “Volcker Rule” to regulate large banks and prevent
another financial crisis. In 2013, Paul founded the nonprofit Volcker Alliance to
strengthen the execution of public policies, support public leaders and rebuild
trust in government.
Paul and Anke are longtime friends and supporters of Isles. Paul kicked off Isles’
first capital campaign in 2008, and in 2018, Paul and Anke established a $1M
Challenge Grant to support the Social Profit Center at Mill One.
“Paul has been a hero, mentor, ally and friend for decades. More than
anyone I know, he has seen and experienced it all – fancy theories,
charismatic leaders, wealthy power brokers and greedy institutions.
He is unfazed by them all, remaining true to his north star – a world
where truth, integrity, hard work and fairness get rewarded. He and
Anke lead by example, reminding us that what we do matters most.”
