THE KINGS
COME TO TOWN
From the moment the NBL schedule was
released, everyone has had this game
pencilled in their diaries.
It’s finally here; Melbourne v Sydney in a
Melbourne Cup Day Eve blockbuster at
Melbourne Arena.
The match-ups are tantalising across the
court, with star power at every position.
From Casper Ware and Jerome Randle doing
battle, to Boomer teammates Chris Goulding
and Kevin Lisch facing off, to Dave Barlow
and Brad Newley going head-to-head and
of course the big man battle between Josh
Boone and Andrew Bogut.
And don’t forget the likes of Mitch McCarron
and DJ Kennedy for Melbourne and Daniel
Kickert and Brian Bowen for Sydney – all
four will have plenty of say in the outcome
of the game.
Both teams meet on Monday night having
played earlier in the weekend. The Kings
are coming off a home game against the
Illawarra Hawks, whilst United have returned
from a road trip to Cairns.
The connections between the two teams
are almost endless. Bogut, arguably
the best basketballer Victoria has ever
produced and Melbourne basketball’s
favourite son, Andrew Gaze are leading the
charge for Sydney. Whilst former United
players Kickert and Kyle Adnam are now the
enemy.
Vickerman, a former assistant to Gaze
in Sydney, led Melbourne to the
Championship last year and Craig Moller’s
NBL career started in Sydney with the Kings.
All these connections will mean little when
the first tip goes up on Monday night
though.
Whenever Casper Ware and Jerome Randle
go head-to-head, fans are treated to a show.
Two of the craftiest guards in the league,
who are both capable of taking over a game,
going toe-to-toe is what makes the NBL so
fun to watch. Neither will take a backwards
step and if one gets hot, they may just be
the game-breaker.
The big man battle between Josh Boone and
Andrew Bogut has been much talked about
and Boone is ready to go. He lives for the big
battles and there’s no doubt this match-up
is exactly that.
Bogut currently leads the league in
rebounding (11.2 per game), while Boone is
second with 10.4. Not much splits the pair in
the blocks department either; Bogut leads
the league (3.2 per game) and Boone is
again second with 2.2.
The battle for the boards will be massive.
Melbourne has struggled at times to control
grab defensive rebounds, thus allowing
second chance points for their opponents.
This simply can’t happen against a team like
Sydney as they will make you pay and take
advantage at every opportunity.
If Boone, along with Pledger, can fight tooth
and nail for every board and control Bogut’s
playmaking abilities by shutting down the
space he has to operate in, Sydney’s offence
simply won’t run as smoothly.
Chris Goulding and Kevin Lisch are two of the
biggest stars in the NBL and have been for a
long period of time. The 2010 NBL Grand Final
MVP in Lisch, and Goulding, the 2018 NBL
Grand Final MVP, both know what it takes
to win in this league and are leaders of their
respective teams.
Goulding, currently averaging 20 points, 3.5
assists and 2.7 rebounds per game, has been
in great form to start the season and despite
a recent knee injury, should be ready for
action come Monday night.
Lisch is finding his feet this season after
missing much of last season through injury.
He hit a pair of clutch triples in Sydney’s
overtime win against Cairns last round and
finished the game with 22 points, 5 rebounds
and 4 assists.
There are superstars across the board and
with it being Andrew Bogut’s much-hyped
first game in Victoria, it is time to get loud and
get behind your team, Melbourne!
This is going to be a good one.
MERCHANDISE
MITCH MCCARRON
IS ON THE MONEY!
Mitch McCarron spent two seasons in
Cairns doing a bit of everything. He scored,
passed the ball and rebounded at a very
high rate. Oh, and he produced just a few
highlight plays.
After returning home from playing his former
side; the Cairns Taipans, for the first time on
Saturday night and having played a handful of
games in his new colours, McCarron is doing
all that and more for Melbourne United
McCarron has already proven he fits within
the United system and provides whatever is
needed for coach Dean Vickerman.
Whilst McCarron feels at home in Melbourne,
he admits there’s still plenty to work on as a
unit.
“When we talk about ourselves, I think we’re
still trying to figure that out a little bit. One thing
is – and it’s not just us, there’s other teams
in the league too – when you have a lot of
talent, you sometimes don’t know who is going
to do what at times and there is a fair bit of
crossover – we have guys that can do a lot,”
he said.
“I’m starting to feel a lot more comfortable now
in my role and I think guys are learning to play
with me and I’m learning to play with other
guys.”
McCarron’s assist numbers also tell the story
that he is truly finding his feet in Melbourne.
Currently averaging a career-high in assists
(3.8 per game), McCarron knows he needs to
stay aggressive and the rest will take care of
itself.
“I just want to stay aggressive,” he said.
“If I can create for my teammates – when
you’ve got scorers like Casper and Chris on
the perimeter – if I can help get them going or
get them some easy shots early in the game,
then I think it helps them a lot.
“It works in reverse as well. When you’ve
got guys like DJ, Chris and even Booney
garners a lot of attention down there, you find
yourself with a bit more time to get a shot off
sometimes. I’m just trying to make the most of
what comes my way and stay aggressive.”
As well as dishing out assists at a career-high
rate, McCarron is also making triples at the
highest percentage of his career. At 47%
(7/15) on three’s, McCarron is proving to be a
valuable commodity from deep in a team that
boasts the likes of sharp-shooters Casper
Ware, Chris Goulding and Dave Barlow.
He is far from content though.
“It’s nice to see some go in, but I still don’t think
it’s where it should be,” he said of his threepoint
shooting.
“I feel like I can shoot it even better and that’s
going to keep me hungry and keep working
every day at it.”
And don’t worry Melbourne fans, McCarron
isn’t fazed as to whether he is starting or
coming off the bench.
“I don’t think it matters for me. It was very
similar when I was in Cairns –
some games I started and some games I
didn’t,” he said.
“I just to try to be consistent, bring energy and
play the way I do regardless. Obviously with
the amount of depth that we have, there will
be games where I don’t’ [start], and that’s
more than okay.”
With another away-home double-header this
round, McCarron says he is getting used to the
tough scheduling and knows it’s something
that faces all teams.
“Right now, for us it’s four double-headers in a
row; it’s great, the more basketball the better –
but it is a bit of a challenge when you’ve got to
go out on the road and then back home,” he
said.
“That’s all part of it though, everyone has to do
it and the best need to be able to win those
games.”
Last Monday night’s win over Illawarra was a
dominant first half performance by Melbourne
and despite letting the Hawks back into the
game in the second half, it showcased just
how good this team can be when firing on all
cylinders.
“We probably haven’t had a whole quarter like
that – we’ve had moments and obviously
Chris got hot against Perth and Casper has
had his moments – but it was kind of clicking
for everyone at once,” McCarron said.
“It was a good reward for our defence as well
– we’ve worked really hard on the rebounding
and that let us down in Perth and it was good
to see that reward the offence.”
A key to the win over Illawarra was everyone
standing up and playing their role. Without
captain Chris Goulding, it was team effort –
and some Casper Ware magic –
that got United over the line.
“It’s important for us and I think every team will
need to have their guys that step up,” he said.
“The season is too competitive to just have the
same guys relied on game in, game out.”
Having played in front of the Melbourne
faithful a few times now, McCarron is loving
every second and thriving off the energy that
a packed-out Melbourne Arena crowd gives
him and his teammates.
“It’s been fun and we’ve had some close games
for people to really be on the edge of their
seats,” he said.
“It was nice to see a lot of people there on
Monday, you never know with Monday night
games and with it being school night, but we
had a good crowd and they were into it and it
makes it fun.”
After returning home from Cairns, Melbourne
have quickly shifted their attention to Sydney.
The Cup Day Eve blockbuster is one of the
most highly-anticipated games of the season
and McCarron has no doubt about the
challenge that lies ahead.
“Sydney are a classic example of just how
deep some of the teams are in this league,” he
said.
“You look at them on paper and they’re super
tough, but if we come out with the right
mindset, I’m sure we’ll take it right to them.”
With every game played, McCarron and his
new teammates are becoming more and more
comfortable with one another, and that sure is
a dangerous sign for the rest of the NBL.
