Council staff will meet with club officials to discuss options for a grant funded clean up and beautification of the club’s grounds after a request was made to last Tuesday night’s council meeting from club stalwarts Ron Ryan and Dorian Guardala. “The beautification work we need is beyond the best efforts of our volunteers,” Mr Ryan said. Councillor Roy Maggio (Ind) and Clr Trenton Brown (Lib) spoke in favour of the club’s request, because the site is owned by The City of Ryde and leased to the club. “What I am asking for and all I am asking for is that we assist the club to beautify the City of Ryde and to source the funds to do it from our local MP,” cLR Maggio SAID. Councillor Brown said the City of Ryde shouldn’t expect elderly bowlers to be digging up weeds. “It is a community club and like a lot of bowling clubs it is favoured by elderly members from our community,” he said. “At their age they cannot be weeding and we cannot ask them to get out there with a whipper snipper.” Questions asked by Clr Dr Peter Kim (Labor) revealed that the club’s lease does, in fact, require the club to upkeep the grounds. “Are we asking ratepayers to (spend money) to beautify a bowling club, a private business ?” ‘‘We could open a floodgate by doing this.” Liberal Chris Moujalli took up the point. “If someone has agreed in a lease to maintain the upkeep they should keep the agreement and the points made by Clr Kim are entirely correct,” he said. “But I would be happy for our staff to assist, with funding.” City of Ryde Director (City Works) Wayne Rylands it is possible for his staff to assist and to even offer design assistance while Clr Sarkis Yedelian OAM (Lib) said it is the City of Ryde’s duty to assist. Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts is expected to receive a letter requesting a grant. Birthday girl’s appeal for baseball net A BIRTHDAY WISH from a 13 year old City of Ryde girl for a baseball net at Pioneer Park in North Ryde looks like it will be granted. Emma Hooper turned 13 on Tuesday but gave up her family celebration to make this appeal to councillors. “Today is my 13th birthday but I think it is more important to come here and ask for baseball nets,” she said. “Nets help young baseball players like myself to focus on our swing without the risk of someone getting hit. We are now hitting the balls a long way and that only increases the risk.” Councillors have called for a staff report on the cost and feasibility of nets in consultation with North Ryde RSL Baseball Club and the Macquarie Saints Baseball Club.
Wednesday 7 November, 2018 THE WEEKLY TIMES 31 TWT SPORTS STARS NO 5, 6,7 Honours for Hockeyroo Mikaela, bowls ace Jack and super runner Leon BY CHRIS KARAS HOCKEYROOS sensation Mikaela Patterson, lawn bowls whiz Jack McShane and rising middle distance runner Jacob Leon are the fifth, sixth and seventh monthly winners in the 2018-19 TWT Club Six/Ryde Sports Foundation Sports Star of the Year Award. Boom Ryde-Hunters Hill midfielder Patterson made her senior international debut for the Australian womens hockey team in a test series against Japan in Adelaide last September; 13 year old McShane represented NSW City in the annual bowls challenge against Country while talented athlete Leon stamped himself an endurance runner of the highest calibre after collecting a swag of medals at State and National Championships this season. All three will be recognised for their achievements at a Presentation Evening this Friday November 9 at Gladesville Sporties Club from 6pm. * * * MIKAELA PATTER- SON is one of the most exciting attacking midfielders on the national hockey scene and a fine ambassador for the famous Ryde- Hunters Hill Panthers Hockey Club. 22 year old Mikaela earned her international spurs last season when she made her debut for the Hockeyroos against Japan in Adelaide followed by a Four Nations tournament in the island nation. A dynamo on the field, Patterson demonstrated her poise and skills against more seasoned opponents to push her claims for a regular spot. The Panthers’ Senior Club Captain has now chalked up seven appearances for the Hockeyroos over the past twelve months and is currently on tour with the Australia A team in China. It has been a rewarding period for the Panthers product who was earmarked for higher honours from an early age - representing NSW at school and junior level and figuring prominently in national championshipwinning teams and being named in the Hockey Australia Futures squad. Mikaela was involved in the Ausralian junior hockey set up for four years, playing a key role in the Australian Jillaroos side that claimed a bronze medal at the Women’s U/21 World Cup in Santiago, Chile during 2016. She waa also a key member of the NSW Arrows team that captured the Women’s Australian Hockey League title with an epic 7-6 victory over Queensland Scorchers last month. But while realising her dream of playing for the Hockeyroos, one of Mikaela’s proudest achievements was helping Ryde-Hunters Hill clinch an historic Sydney Women’s Hockey Metro League 1 premiership last season. Tim Collier’s courageous Pantherettes produced a stunning display to bury title favourites Gordon-North Sydney 5-2 in the 2017 Grand Final at Sydney Olympic Park and bring home Ryde’s first-ever top grade women’s premiership since their promotion to the top tier Sydney Women’s Premier Hockey League eight years ago. Inspired by Patterson - the best player on ground - the Ryde team displayed skill and courage to upset the highly fancied GNS and claim bragging rights. Young Mikaela showed her class as she sparked the attack with her precision passing and elusive running to engineer a rousing triumph and stamp the Pantherettes as local heroes. * * * PROMISING lawn bowler JACK Mc- SHANE has a rosy future in the sport, if recent achievements are any guide. The 13 year old Cumberland High School student has capped a meteoric rise with selection in the NSW State Junior Gold Bowls squad after outstanding feats with Denistone Sports Mens Bowling Club. Capable Jack showed a maturity that far belies his years when he won the Club’s Minor Singles title at the age of 11 - then followed it up by claiming the Major Singles Championship in 2017. A testimony of his natural ability is the fact that hot shot Jack has played in Denistone Sports Club’s top pennant team for the past three years. Under the guidance of leading coach Mark Barton and mentors Bill Sutcliffe and Ted Lean - two Denistone bowls legends who run the Zone 10 Junior Academy - young Mc- Shane has developed into one of the State’s brightest prospects. Barton, Sutcliffe and Lean have been huge influences on Jack’s bowling career at club and Zone 10 level, honing his skills from the moment he took up the game as a three year old. Jack was introduced to the sport when he tagged along to the greens with his mother Kathy and father Andrew - a Denistone bowls stalwart - with a small set of carpet bowls. With the help of bowler Peter Turner, he delivered his first bowl as a bright eyed toddler! By the age of 11, Jack had won the Zone 10 Bowling Association Rookie Singles Championship; the Club’s Minor Singles title and forced his way into the top Pennant team. More honours followed when he won the Zone 10 Junior Fours Championship; Denistone Major Singles; Drakes Pride U/15 Singles championship and finished runner up in the NSW State Junior Fours Championships in Warilla at the age of 12. His potential was confirmed in 2018 when he was skipper of the Club’s Open Fours championshipwinning side and finished runner up in the NSW State Junior Pairs Championship with Luca Houze and the Zone 10 Open Fours. Earlier this year Jack represented Sydney West in the NSW Combined High Schools competition and gained selection for State City in the annual bowls challenge with Country. Jack aspires to one day represent Australia at school, junior and senior level and follow in the steps of Australia’s former world junior bowls champion Aaron Wilson and don the green and gold at the Commonwealth Games. * * * JACOB LEON of Concord has continued Ryde Athletics Club’s proud tradition of producing stellar middle distance runners. Ryde-Hunters Hill’s dynamic midfielder Mikaela Patterson in action for the Hockeyroos against Japan. At the age of 14 and under the tutelage of master coach Ross Forster, young Jacob has left his mark on the track with record breaking performances to earn a spot in NSW Junior Athletics teams. Over the past twelve months the determined Leon has sliced 12 seconds off his 800m; five seconds off his 1500m and 13 seconds off his 3000m times to prove himself a calm young athlete and superb first leg runner for both track and cross country relays. He took up athletics at the age of 12 and just like his father - former Ryde middle distance runner Carl Leon - was an instant success, winning the Sydney North Region Boys 800m. Jacob won silver in the NSW CHS 800m and followed that up with a fifth place in the 13yrs 800m on debut at the NSW All Schools Carnival - achieving a national qualifying time. Last November Jacob spearheaded the U/14 Boys 4x 1500m team to a silver medal at the Athletics NSW State Relays and again handed off the team a brilliant start the next day in the 4 x800m where they brought home a bronze. Earlier this year Jacob took on the double of 3000m and 800m at the NSW Junior Track & Field Championships - clocking a time of 9m 33.39sec in the 3000m to secure bronze which was almost 27 seconds under the national qualifying mark. In the 800m, Jacob’s time of 2min 06.78s earned him another bronze and a second qualifying event and spot on the NSW team for the Australian Junior Championships which was a remarkable feat for his first season. At Little Athletics Jacob was also achieving excellent results. He clean swept every event from 400m, 800m, 1500m and 3000m at the Zone Carnival before setting a new Region 800m record in 2m 06.83s. Jacob won gold in the 1500m and 3000m, qualifying him for the NSW Little Athletics State Championships for all three events. He placed third in the 1500m in a time of 4m 23.59s and won the 3000m State title with a PB 9min 28.52 - a clear winner by almost nine seconds. Jacob’s performances at Little A and for Ryde Seniors saw him recognised at the 2017/18 Presentation where he collected the Davis Lewis Trophy for Outstanding Middle Distance runner; Shannon Arnott Single Most Outstanding Performance Trophy and Outstanding Individual Performance in Middle Distance. He sealed his credentials as a team player when he helped Ryde’s U/16 Boys 4 x 3000m team win bronze at the NSW Cross Country Relay Championships. At the Sydney North Region Cross Country Championships Jacob was first boy home in the 14yrs 4000m and later won three titles at the Region Athletics Carnival - U/14s 800m and 1500m and the 12-15yrs 3000m. Jacob was in top form at the NSW CHS Carnival in September - snaring silver in the 14yrs Boys 800m with a PB of 2 mins 06.66s and 1500m with a PB 4m 18.81s. At the NSW All Schools Athletics Championships, Leon won silver in the Boys 3000m and picked up a bronze in the 14yrs 1500m final with a super time of 4m 22.70s. The versatile Concord High School student is also a talented boxer and a promising centre back with Parramatta-Melita Eagles in the National Premier Soccer League. After stints with Concord Juniors and Inter Lions, the gifted Leon was a standout in this year’s U/14 competition. Mikaela, Jack and Jacob will receive their $1000 awards at the Sports Star of the Year Gala Dinner at Ryde Eastwood Leagues Club on May 3, 2019. Sydney FC To Recognise Remembrance Round Sydney FC’s Hyundai A-League clash away against Newcastle Jets at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday 10 November will coincide with Remembrance Round and will be dedicated to remembering and acknowledging the service men and women who sacrificed their lives during times of conflict and also coincides with the Centenary of the Armistice. ‘Remembrance Round’, a joint initiative between Football Federation Australia (FFA), the Hyundai A-League Clubs and the Australian Defence Force (ADF), will be observed at all matches during Round 4 of the Hyundai A-League as well as at the Westfield Matildas v Chile match at Panthers Stadium. Remembrance Round will help promote the observance of Remembrance Day nationally, provide benefits to ADF personnel, and utilise the Hyundai A-League and Westfield Matildas as a vehicle to effect meaningful social change by shining a spotlight on the significance of Remembrance Day. Remembrance Round is a significant opportunity to be able to commemorate Remembrance Day with the ADF, RSL (Returned & Services League of Australia), and the Football Community in Australia. FFA Chief Executive Officer David Gallop AM, was proud that the FFA is once again partnering with the ADF and the RSL to recognise the brave men and women that have served their country. The Sky Blues will pause to remember the countries serivemen and women on Saturday. “Remembrance Round allows us to support the observance of Remembrance Day nationally and reflect on the heroes who have given their lives in the line of duty,” said Gallop. “This year’s Remembrance Round takes on an added special significance as it coincides with the one hundredth anniversary of the Armistice that ended the first World War. “Lest we forget those that have sacrificed their lives to ensure that our way of life is preserved.” All Hyundai A-League clubs hosting matches this weekend will have special ticket offers for serving ADF members to recognise and thank those in the defence forces and all clubs will use the opportunity to raise funds for the Poppy Appeal through the auctioning off of their commemorative playing kits which will be used during the round.
