2018 MARKED TEN YEARS SINCE LIVERPOOL WAS NAMED EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF
CULTURE AND IT HAS BEEN A BREATH-TAKING ANNIVERSARY YEAR FOR THE CITY REGION.
A year-long schedule of ground-breaking exhibitions,
festivals and events has meant that Liverpool is now
more popular than ever and is firmly cemented
as a major European city break destination.
The perfect base to explore the North West region,
Liverpool is a dynamic and thrilling city with an
unrivalled cultural offering. A packed itinerary of
events will continue long after the anniversary year
is over and with 2 UNESCO accolades to its name
it’s no surprise that Liverpool was voted 3rd in the
TripAdvisor Travellers Choice Awards, sitting only
behind the capital cities of London and Edinburgh.
Liverpool is home to more national museums than any
other city outside of London and visitors can take in
various blockbuster exhibitions. Double Fantasy: John and
Yoko continues to tell the story of the couple in their own
words at Museum of Liverpool until Spring 2019 whilst the
Walker Art Gallery will host exhibitions from both Charles
Rennie Mackintosh and Leonardo da Vinci in 2019.
2019 will also see two of the city’s most iconic locations
transformed, making them the ideal stop off for visitors.
Royal Liver Building 360 will bring guided public tours to
Liverpool’s most iconic landmark, The Royal Liver Building,
for the very first time. Strawberry Fields, made famous
by The Beatles song of the same name, is set to open its
gates to the public with the creation of a brand new visitor
centre alongside a training and work placement hub.
Visitors to Liverpool can also take a trip outside of the
city centre to one of the many galleries across the city
region including Lady Lever Art Gallery in Port Sunlight
or The Atkinson in Southport. Thrill seekers can hope
the weather works in their favour as they whizz around
the Land Rover Experience and of course the world’s
most famous steeplechase, the Randox Grand National,
will return to Aintree Racecourse in April 2019.
With so much to see, do and explore, Liverpool is
the perfect destination for your city break. Make
sure you keep an eye on visitliverpool.com for
all the up to date information and events.
ARTS AND CULTURE
LIVERPOOL IS KNOWN FOR BEING A CULTURAL DESTINATION, WITH MORE NATIONAL
MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES THAN ANYWHERE ELSE OUTSIDE LONDON. WITH A
THRIVING CONTEMPORARY ARTS SCENE AND TWO UNESCO DESIGNATIONS.
WE’VE PICKED OUT JUST SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OVER THIS SEASON.
VISITLIVERPOOL.COM

ART
The Royal Albert Dock Liverpool welcomed a new major
commission in late 2018, when Ugo Rondinone’s Liverpool
Mountain became the acclaimed Swiss artist’s first public
work in the UK. Inspired by naturally occurring Hoodoos
(spires or pyramids of rock) and the art of meditative rock
balancing, this 10-metre high sculpture consists of coloured
rocks, stacked vertically which seem to defy gravity.
Its arrival has only increased the area’s art credentials.
Shadowing over the new sculpture is Tate Liverpool, one
of the most critically and commercially successful galleries
in the country. Highlights of its winter season include a
reconstruction of Alex Katz’s studio with many of his major
works in it, a solo exhibition of French artist Fernand Leger
and a dazzling display of Op Art works. However,
visitors can also immerse themselves in the
gallery’s permanent collection, which
is always evolving.
A short walk along
the waterfront is
Open Eye Gallery,
a specialist
photography space
which has a glowing
reputation for its displays
and exhibitions, and will have a
lot of activity this season in the
lead-up to the LOOK Photo Biennial.
QUENTIN BLAKE AND JOHN YEOMAN
AT LADY LEVER ART GALLERY
TATE LIVERPOOL: OP ART
Walker Art Gallery houses one of Europe’s finest
collections of paintings, drawings, sculpture and
decorative art and is always a must-visit. It has a particularly
busy 2019, with a major exhibition on Charles Rennie
Mackintosh from 15th March and a selection of Leonardo
da Vinci’s greatest drawings from 1st February.
The Bluecoat is the oldest building in the city centre,
and is a true hub for arts. Its galleries are home to several
linked exhibitions throughout the season, and its event
space hosts a regular programme of performance art,
music and drama. It has a long and strong history of
artistic education and development, and there are still
more than 30 studios dotted around the building, some
of which are open to the public with prior booking or for
classes and workshops in skills such as screenprinting or
etching. Finally, make sure you have a look in the wonderful
Bluecoat Display Centre, which showcases contemporary
designers across jewellery, ceramics and ornaments
and is a wonderful place for buying a special gift.
FACT, situated on Wood Street, is the UK’s leading
media arts centre. Its main exhibition for this season is
Broken Symmetries, which brings together artists who
aim to understand and question the physical world by
navigating the shifting realities of modern science.
The rest of the city region has some excellent galleries
as well. Port Sunlight village is arguably a work of art in
itself, and in its centre sits Lady Lever – a beautiful gallery
packed with wonderful eighteenth and nineteenth century
British art and which this season hosts an
exhibition celebrating the magnificent
partnership between Quentin Blake
and illustrator John Yeoman.
Southport’s The Atkinson has delved into its archives
to present The Art of Noise, a wonderful
exhibition of paintings and sculpture
documenting the links between visual art
and music which runs until 16th March.
HERITAGE
Just like Stonehenge, Florence and the Taj
Mahal – Liverpool also holds UNESCO World
Heritage Status.
Liverpool’s iconic waterfront is home to the Three Graces
– the Cunard Building, the Port of Liverpool Building and
of course the Royal Liver Building. Atop of the latter sit
two Liver Birds, the symbols and ‘guardians’ of the city,
perching 300 feet above the streets below. From spring,
Royal Liver Building 360 brings guided public tours to
Liverpool’s most iconic landmark for the very first time.
For further evidence of why the city is so decorated, take
a stroll around the Royal Albert Dock Liverpool. The
Dock, which dates back to 1840, is the largest collection
of Grade I listed buildings in the country and has
played an integral part in Liverpool’s fortunes
for more than 170 years. But it is far from just a
heritage site – it is nowadays home to exceptional
restaurants, bars, museums and some of
Liverpool’s most popular visitor attractions.
If you want to get a sense of the ever-evolving
story of Liverpool, you only need to look
up and glance at the buildings. Liverpool
has some of the best examples of
neoclassical architecture in the
world, such as the magnificent
DID YOU
KNOW?
St George’s Hall. Or just over William Brown Street,
visit Central Library to see how stunning original
features like the Picton Reading Room have
been merged with contemporary architecture
to become an architectural wonder.
The Georgian Quarter is a very different
but equally striking area, home to
Liverpool’s two famous cathedrals; the
soaring neo-gothic Liverpool Cathedral
(the largest in the UK) and the modernist
Catholic Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the
King with its glorious stained glass windows.
It’s unsurprising that when RIBA was looking
to open a new national architecture centre, it
chose the waterfront. As well as offices there are
exhibitions open to the public, and architectural
tours running through different themes of the city.
MUSEUMS
The Museum of Liverpool impresses with its landmark
waterfront location and unique exhibitions. Inside, visitors
can explore how Liverpool’s port, its culture and its people
have shaped the city. Also currently showing is Double
Fantasy: John and Yoko, which tells the story of their
relationship in their own words, and using many items
which Yoko Ono has allowed to be seen for the first time.
Just along the waterfront at the Royal Albert Dock
Liverpool, there is the Merseyside Maritime Museum,
where you can find out all about the people, ships
and the companies connected to this port city.
Housed in the same building is the International
Slavery Museum, which gives an unflinching account
of the slave trade and the city’s role within it.
Port Sunlight is a must-see when visiting the city region.
The model village located in Wirral is packed with history,
and the story of how it was built by William Hesketh
wonderfully told at the Port Sunlight Museum.
PERFORMANCE
Liverpool’s performance spaces do a roaring trade in both
laughter and tears, sometimes on the same night.
The legendary Everyman theatre was completely rebuilt in
2014, winning the RIBA Stirling Prize for the UK’s best new
building and, more importantly, adoring fans for its bold,
intelligent and fun productions. Together with sister theatre
Playhouse, it attracts some of the best companies in the
business as well as developing local talent.
The Empire is the largest theatre in Liverpool and stages
the big musicals and spectacular shows, often straight from
the West End.
The Royal Court offers a range of long-running plays and
one-off nights, and the Epstein Theatre is Grade II listed
with a striking interior and whole host of entertainment of
all varieties.
The Unity Theatre, which plays host to some of the most
innovative theatre and performance in the city, has been
joined in the Georgian Quarter by the Hope Street Theatre
– recently opened in the Masonic Hall, and adding yet
another string to Liverpool’s theatrical bow.
Elsewhere, the Floral Pavilion in New Brighton, the seaside
resort of Southport’s Theatre and Convention Centre and
St Helens Theatre Royal all have varied programmes of
theatre, family shows, comedy and music.
Each November Homotopia, the month-long LGBT+
arts festival, brings cutting-edge performance to the
city. Immerse yourself in its eclectic mix of drama, music,
workshops, drag and dance – with a headline draw being
John Waters’s only UK show in 2018.
Regular comedy nights can be found everywhere in the
city – with Comedy Central, Hot Water Comedy Club or
Laughterhouse at The Slaughter House.
Then there is the Echo Arena – in addition to music
superstars it hosts all the big names of comedy. Over
the Christmas period its pantomime is Peter Pan, with A
Christmas Carol at the Everyman, Jack & the Beanstalk at
the Empire and Aladdin at the Floral Pavilion amongst the
other highlights.
The Beatles put Liverpool on the map, and things in
the city were never the same. You can fully experience
Beatlemania in many of Liverpool’s venues and attractions.
The Beatles Story and Magical History Museum are great
places to start, to see how four local lads in a skiffle group
evolved into the global phenomenon which defined the
1960s. Discover fascinating memorabilia, including the
band’s original instruments and outfits, rare album sleeves,
photographs and hand-written lyrics. Take a trip down
memory (and Penny) Lane on the Magical Mystery Tour,
which takes you to the childhood homes of Lennon and
McCartney plus Strawberry Field and many other iconic
locations. The tour finishes on Mathew Street, home to the
famous Cavern Club which was the centre of the rock and
roll universe in the 1960s, and still hosts live music every
night – including a set by Paul McCartney himself in 2018.
Within the Royal Albert Dock Liverpool is The Beatles
Story, an illuminating interactive experience which will
take you through the history of the band from their
earliest days through Beatlemania and then their
subsequent solo careers. With separate rooms devoted
to key periods and albums, such as Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely
Hearts Club, their time in India and finally with a touching
John Lennon tribute, it’s an in-depth look at the band.
mix of hidden bars, floor-to-ceiling whiskey
cellars, confetti canons and bingo bonanzas.
If you’re on the hunt for a hive of activity then Seel Street
is the place to be. Filled with bars and clubs, take a
walk from one end to the other and you’ll be sure to
find one that takes your fancy. For the ultimate carnival
atmosphere head to Alma de Cuba. A converted
church (yes, you read that right) which is now home to
Latin dancers and confetti showers every weekend.
Across the road, Peacock is the perfect place to dance
the night away while Heebie Jeebies has 3 floors of
musical madness and a courtyard where you’ll find
half of Liverpool convening at the end of the night.
Stray just off Seel Street and you’ll find a myriad of bars
to ensure you don’t lose pace. Berry and Rye on Berry
Street is Liverpool’s very own speakeasy, keep your eyes
peeled for a blackened door and window; cocktails
taste so much better when you’ve had to hunt them
down after all! Whiskey connoisseurs should pay a visit
to Whiskey Business on Colquitt Street or if gin is your
SPORT
SPORT IS A VERY SERIOUS MATTER IN LIVERPOOL, AND IS ONE OF THE THINGS THAT DEFINES IT.
With two Premier League football clubs, the world’s
most famous horse race and a host of championship
golf courses, the city region offers something for all
Liverpool Football Club has an extremely rich history,
winning 18 national league titles and 5 European Cups,
narrowly missing out on a sixth in 2018. The club’s museum
and stadium tours allow visitors to immerse themselves
in one of the world’s most famous clubs through stateof-the-art
technology, learning about legends such as
Bill Shankly and Kenny Dalglish as well as following in
the footsteps trod by Jurgen Klopp’s current side.
Across Stanley Park, Everton Football Club are also one of
the most storied clubs in the country. As well as being one
of the original founding members of the football league,
they are the fourth most successful club in England,
having won 9 league titles, 5 FA Cups and one European
trophy while boasting legends such as Dixie Dean, Alan
Ball, Neville Southall and, most recently, Wayne Rooney.
Visit their historic Goodison Park to see one of the finest
examples of a traditional English football ground.
2019 sees Liverpool host the Netball World Cup, which
promises to be one of the most anticipated events
on the calendar. Fresh from their success in defeating
Australia in their own backyard at the Commonwealth
Games, all eyes will be on England and whether
they can win their first Netball World Cup. Sixteen
countries from across the world will be descending on
Liverpool throughout July, with games from 12-21st.
LIVERPOOL FC
Aintree and Haydock Park Racecourses both host
Class 1 horse racing throughout the calendar.
The highlight of course is each April, when the
Randox Health Grand National comes to town,
attracting tens of thousands of spectators as well
as more than 600 million TV viewers worldwide.
However it’s not just horse racing. In December, the
Liverpool International Horse show returns to the
Echo Arena, bringing world-class dressage and show
jumping to the city in an end-of-year spectacular
that’s ideal for enthusiasts and newcomers alike.
The city region’s coastal locations means it’s a perfect
spot for golf courses, boasting 19 in total. The jewels
in the crown are the two Royal links courses – Royal
Birkdale and Royal Liverpool – which regularly host
the Open Championship. The Claret Jug most
recently came here in July 2017, when Jordan Speith
triumphed on the Sefton coast. And if you want to play
a round yourself, most courses welcome visitors.
Rugby League fans will know the stature of St. Helens,
who have been at the forefront of the game since
it started. The city region is also home to a second
EVERTON FC
Super League team, Widnes Vikings, and if you’ve
never been to the thrilling spectacle that is a rugby
league game, there’s no better place to start.
And if you fancy getting involved in a sport yourself, the
city region has you covered. Take a look at Liverpool
Watersports Centre or Crosby Lakeside Adventure Centre,
two fantastic facilities which offer beginner
lessons in sports such as canoeing,
windsurfing and open-water swimming.
WHEN YOU WANT THE BEST
AFTERNOON TEA IN LIVERPOOL
Originated by the Duchess of Bedford, afternoon tea
was a convenient way of bridging the hunger gap
between lunch and evening meal. It soon became a
fashionable social event and still is today. Birthdays,
engagements, valentine’s day celebrations, spa breaks
often centre around afternoon tea – now often served
with bubbles such as Prosecco or Champagne.
So we’ve decided to discover some of Liverpool’s best
places for Afternoon Tea. From the traditional, to the
jaw dropping to even Beatles themed. We’ve found it.
OFFER THEN YOU’VE PROBABLY WORKED UP QUITE THE APPETITE.
34
Luckily for you the city is bursting at the seams with
everything from burgers to bagels…the only problem is that
after you’ve sampled them all, your clothes might be too!
It doesn’t matter where you are in the city, you’ll be
sure to find something to whet your appetite.
HOPE STREET
For a fine-dining experience like no other then head to one
of Liverpool’s most loved neighbourhoods, Hope Street in
the Georgian Quarter. If you’re after a special meal that puts
fresh, local produce and great flavour as the priority then
60 Hope Street, The Art School or The London Carriage
Works are all perfect options. For something a little more
relaxed head to The Quarter, we recommend grabbing
one of their sharing boards to tuck into with a friend or
make a beeline for HOST and sample their small plates.
Coffee connoisseurs should pay a visit to 92 Degrees’
coffee who believe they’ve found the perfect temperature
for coffee extractions, yes you guessed it, 92 degrees.
COMMERCIAL DISTRICT
Don’t be fooled into thinking Liverpool’s Commercial
District is just full of busy workers heading to and from
the office, the area is also full of great restaurants and
bars. Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill, in
Hotel Indigo, offers phenomenal dishes in a beautiful,
understated elegance. For the best pancakes this side
of the Atlantic head to Moose Coffee, the ultimate place
If you find yourself taking in Liverpool’s picturesque
restaurants, many of whom have a view to die for. Lunyalita
whose famous hanging kebabs are not to be missed.
A local favourite, Rough Hand Made Bakery, can also
be found at the Royal Albert Dock. With everything
from savoury pasties to sweet treats it will take a whole
lot of will power to walk past without popping in!
For some of the best views in the city head to Panoramic
34; a restaurant that offers floor to ceiling views from the
34th floor. We recommend treating yourself to afternoon
tea with a view of Liverpool’s famous Liver building.
LARK LANE
Just outside of the city centre you’ll find Lark Lane, a
street that comes alive at night with an abundance of
independent restaurants. For carnivores, Meat Factory
is the place to go with some of the best burgers in town.
Liverpool ONE draws in visitors from all over the world.
With over 170 stores, restaurants and bars located in the
contemporary open-air complex, it’s a stylish must-visit for
those who love to shop, eat, drink and relax. Shopaholics
will love the variety of high-street brands such as John
Lewis, Zara and H&M. If it’s designer style you’re after then
head to Peters Lane and indulge in brands like Michael
Kors, Hugo Boss and Ted Baker.
Beauty lovers will be in their element at Harvey Nichols
Beauty Bazaar, the first of its kind in the UK as a one-stop
destination for all things beauty over three glamorous floors
offering the finest in make-up, fragrances, skincare and
treatments. You can take a break from the hustle and bustle
in their lavish Champagne and Cocktail Bar or relax in one
of their private spa rooms; retail therapy at its best!
One of the hidden gems within Liverpool ONE is the
Bluecoat’s independent retailers. Highlights include Probe
Records, Kernaghan Books and the wonderful design
showcase that is Bluecoat Display Centre.
BOLD STREET. Lonely Planet rated Bold Street as one of
the best shopping streets in the country, and it’s easy to see
why. Its eclectic and charismatic mix of independent shops
and eateries charm you from the get-go. Unearth vintage
gems and reworked clothes in Cow and Pop Boutique or
discover the latest street-style in Size and Resurrection.
Utility is a favourite with locals and visitors, you can find two
of their stores on Bold Street with different formats. The
larger store at No. 60 is their interiors store where you will
CITY CENTRE. Church Street is the traditional centre of
Liverpool’s retail offer, and is home to big names such as
Marks & Spencer, Primark, Next and Clarks. There’s also
a TK Maxx which, for our money, has the best selection
of any we’ve been to! Performers are dotted down the
street, and help to ensure the whole area is always busy
and buzzing.
Metquarter is a shopping centre which prides itself on
designer brands both major and local, as Hugo Boss,
Gieves & Hawkes and Kurt Geiger rub shoulders with
Francesca Couture and House of CB.
OUTSIDE THE CENTRE. If you love vintage then you
should head Red Brick Hangar, situated in Cain’s Brewery
Village. You can lose hours in here exploring each of
the different trader stalls from some of the city’s best
independents, with artists, jewellers, boutique designers,
tattooists and barbers.
The coastal town of Southport is a short drive (or train ride)
away from the city centre and offers a wonderful selection
of boutique, independent stores within a procession of
classic Victorian Arcades located on the famous Lord
Street boulevard. It’s said that Napoleon III was inspired
by Southport when remodelling Paris, and it’s easy to see
why! There are also department stores, specialist shops
and all the major high street names.
Lark Lane is considered one of the city’s most popular
streets, situated in South Liverpool. You can find bohemian
independents such as Larks and Number 13, treasure
troves full of quirky gifts, cards, incense and jewellery. Up
the road Frieda Mo’s is not only a vintage boutique but
also a bakery and event space stocking your favourite
SOUTH LIVERPOOL
IT’S AN AREA OF PARKS, INDEPENDENT EATERIES AND BARS, HISTORIC LANDMARKS
AND DISTINCTIVE AREAS. IT’S ALSO VERY EASY TO NAVIGATE, WITH REGULAR BUSES,
MERSEYRAIL TRAINS AND GOOD CYCLE ROUTES.
40
As wonderful and entertaining as the city centre is,
we’d heartily encourage you to spread your visit out
to take in some of the other areas of the city region.
Where better to start than South Liverpool?
It’s an area of parks, independent eateries and
bars, historic landmarks and distinctive areas. It’s
also very easy to navigate, with regular buses,
Merseyrail trains and good cycle routes.
Sefton Park, the largest park in the whole city region, is a
good place to start. It’s home to events throughout the
year including food festivals, Africa
Oyé and LIMF, but is well worth a
visit at any time. The spectacular
glass Palm House is a must-see and
as well as hosting events, is open
virtually all year for visitors hoping
to see its constantly-evolving botanical
collection. Take some peas to feed the swans and other
birds in Sefton Park lake, and stroll through the Fairy Glen.
Adjoining the park is Lark Lane, a hub of independent
shops, restaurants and bars which is popular with
visitors as well as locals. It’s hard to narrow it down to
a few places, but we’ll try. Boutiques such as Larks and
Number 13 have you covered for one-off clothing,
jewellery and gifts, and the Tea House stocks beautiful
handmade teaware as well as serving you some delicious
conconctions. For food and drink, Keith’s Wine Bar is
a local institution, Green Days café serves delicious
vegetarian breakfasts and brunches, and Monkey Grinder
offers up some perfect and unusual cocktails. Lark Lane
also offers flavours from around the world – Turkey (Elif
and Belly), Greece (Cypriana), Thailand (Chilli Banana),
the Middle East (Lark Lane Bistro) and Italy (Nonno’s).
Many Beatles fans make
pilgrimage to Penny Lane in
South Liverpool. You can get
there on the Magical Mystery
Tour or a number of other
Beatles tours operating in
Lark Lane has a farmers market on the fourth
the city.
Saturday of every month, with delicious fresh
produce from all kinds of retailers, whether
you’re looking for ingredients or something to chow
down there and then. And if you’re in the city on the first
Saturday of the month, you absolutely can’t miss the
Granby Street Market, which is always buzzing. It offers
great food as well as arts and crafts, on-the-spot portraits,
new and second hand clothing and free bike repairs.
Smithdown Road, the heart of student population, has
quickly gained a reputation for a premium food and drink
offer. Craft beer fans are guaranteed to find something
they like at Craft Taproom or Handymans, in an old DIY
shop. Evil Eye is a burrito shack with a distinct ‘day of
the dead’ feel, and Naked Lunch offers lots of unusual
but delicious combinations. Recent arrival Belzan has
Calderstones Park has a rich history to tell - the ‘CALDER
STONES’ are the remains of an ancient burial mound and are
around 5,000 years old. The 1,000 year old ALLERTON OAK is
thought to be where the sittings of the local court where held.
The park is in the suburb of ALLERTON which is mentioned in
the Domesday Book of 1086.
up elegant food in a relaxed environment. Brainchild of
the same people behind city centre cocktail bar Filter
Another area well worth exploring is the charming Woolton
village. As well as being the site for where John Lennon
first met Paul McCartney (and where Eleanor Rigby’s
gravestone lies), it is packed with highlights. The Elephant
is a pub and restaurant owned by Simon Rimmer, who
all manner of vegan treats. Woolton Picture House is a
beautiful single-screen independent cinema dating back to
the late 1920s, and the phenomenal selection at Liverpool
Cheese Company gives you something to take away.
This is only scratching the surface, but hopefully
gives you a starting point to explore.
