Eleven New Trier students traveled to New York for the festival, which took place Oct. 5-7. Senior Olivia Luna submitted two films that were selected for the festival: one public service announcement titled “Oversharing” produced with fellow seniors Marion Madanguit and Lilly Meehan-Egan, and a short film titled “No New Messages.” Junior Eleanor De Fer’s short film, “Ribbon,” and senior Ben Senior’s short film, “Velveeta,” were also selected. All official selections were screened at the AMC theater in Times Square. Photo Submitted sophomore Ryan Zabors also attended. “Our long-term goal is to continue to submit, have multiple films selected annually, and win awards as well,” New Trier media teacher James Syrek said. “There are specific awards presented at the Teen Indies Awards Ceremony that come with scholarship money, and my goal is for our students to be nominated in these categories, win and receive the support they deserve to pursue their filmmaking dreams.” Students also went on an NBC studio tour during the trip, after which they met with New Trier alum Arthur Meyer ’02, Supervising Writer at “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” Meyer spoke to students about his path through high school, Boston University, and a career in television. At New Trier, Meyer was a theatre student and was highly involved with “No Questions Asked,” the school’s short-form improvisation troupe. “Our group represented the best New Trier throughout the weekend in New York City via their professionalism, support of fellow peers, enthusiasm towards attending panels and workshops, as well as networking with other filmmakers from schools around the country,” Syrek said. School News Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Wilmette resident earns league award for tennis Student-athlete Tess Lubin, of Wilmette, was chosen for a weekly award in women’s tennis by the Liberty League. In a pair of road matches at the beginning of October, the New Trier graduate won both of her singles matches, both at No. 1 to earn Performer of the Week, against Manhattnville and Western Connecticut State on successive days. I just want the community I live in to be free of prejudice, to be culturally diverse.
