PRIMARY SCHOOL
We are passionate about our work as educators and committed to ensuring each of our children can
thrive and reach their full potential. The Primary School is the starting point of a child’s educational
journey and our aim is that their initial experience is enjoyable and motivating in every aspect.
In the Primary School we
recognize the need to foster
a love for learning in
ourchildren so they
remain enthusiastic
and motivated to
continue their
learning
beyond the
classroom.
At St. John’s, academic excellence and personal growth are promoted within a caring, welcoming international community; grounded
by our school’s mission and values and our Christian heritage. I hope you will find that this overview communicates to you what makes
St. John’s special.
THREE MAIN PRINCIPLES GUIDE ALL THAT WE SEEK TO DO:
1
Each child is unique
It is our belief that each child is a special
and unique whole person with individual
learning styles and personal strengths.
Their identity and culture are valued and
we aim to instill in each one a sense of
self-worth. Children are entitled to and
provided with guidance, opportunities and
experiences that lead them to academic,
social, emotional, physical and spiritual
growth.
"At St. John's, learning is fun."
2 3
The work we do is child-centered
The well-being of our children is the main
focus of all that we do in the school
day, and central to our strategic plans to
develop the curriculum and the learning
environment. From the earliest phase the
Primary School encourages children to
interact with the world around them, to
wonder and question, to cultivate caring
and positive relationships and to be
responsible.
A love for learning
The dynamic world we live in requires that
successful individuals be able to continually
adapt to change and new discoveries.
Our programmes are designed to inspire
and generate creativity. Our children are
taught skills that enable them to access
and extract the information they need from
the vast sources available to them. They
are introduced to a solid foundation of
knowledge and conceptual understandings
are nurtured.
THE CURRICULUM
The Primary School is accredited by the International
Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) to teach the Primary Years
Programme (PYP).
The PYP is a recognized international curriculum framework
designed for children from 3-12 years. The programme is
regularly reviewed to keep abreast of best practices and
innovations in both national and international systems,
worldwide. The philosophy and methodologies of the
programme are an excellent fit to our guiding principles and
school wide values.
The PYP focusses on the development of the whole child,
affecting hearts as well as minds. The social, physical,
emotional and cultural needs of children, in addition to
academics, are met through a progressive set of learning
outcomes for each of the subject areas alongside the attributes
of the IB Learner Profile. For further details visit www.ibo.org
The core of the PYP philosophy is learning through structured
inquiry and students and teachers collaborate to answer 3
related questions. What do we want to learn? How best will
we learn? How will we know what we have learned? From
this basis a comprehensive and rigorous curriculum is built
that employs the best of teaching strategies and incorporates
effective assessment procedures.
The curriculum is comprised of the
following disciplines:
Language Arts
Mathematics
Science
Social Studies
Art
Physical Education (PE)
Music
Drama
Dance
French
Character Development
Information Communication Technology (ICT)
DUAL LANGUAGE PROGRAMME
PRIMARY SCHOOL
Our dual language programme in English and French is currently implemented from Pre-K to Grade 5 with a view to
an annual extension plan. Students will follow the same curriculum as the English classes but will work with 2 teachers
during the weekly schedule, each teacher representing one language.
Throughout the year students engage in Units of
Inquiry (UOI) that address the following global
concepts;
• Who are we?
• Where are we in place and time?
• How do we express ourselves?
• How does the world work?
• How do we organize ourselves?
• How should we share our planet?
These themes are revisited each year with a fresh focus
and students follow related ideas of inquiry that deepen and
broaden their learning. The UOIs are designed to be inclusive
of all abilities, cultures and backgrounds.
The PYP is transdiciplinary in nature and encourages
holistic learning and the transfer of knowledge, skills and
understanding from one curriculum area to another.
TIMBERTOPS
This is a purpose built facility that provides a warm
and safe learning environment for children age two
and a half years to five years.
Children here develop a strong feeling of
belonging as they develop self-confidence and
emerge into independent learners. The teaching
team utilises both the inside and outdoor spaces
to create exciting and magical experiences for our
youngest students.
TIMBERTOTS
Children here spend fun filled days participating in
guided activities and play related to a number of
topics that are meaningful to them e.g self-care, the
seasons, colours and shapes, celebrations etc.
Children develop their physical and social skills as
they learn to interact and communicate within a
group.
Children can join this programme when they are 2
years and 6 months old.
10 ST. JOHN'S INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
PRE-KINDERGARTEN
Children join Pre-K at age 3. An emphasis is placed on fostering
independence, imagination, creativity and learning through inquiry and
hands-on activities through 4 Units of Inquiry (UOI).
Teachers draw from a plethora of teaching strategies and materials including circle work,
activity centres, cookery, gardening and construction approaches in order to stimulate
language learning and number readiness. Children have the opportunity to nap after lunch.
PRIMARY SCHOOL
"Our children are blossoming, learning new things every day,
exploring and acquiring yet another language.
They are happier than ever before.”
GRADES 3-5
COMMUNITY LIFE
KINDERGARTEN
The progamme gently begins to blend into a more solid academic foundation
maintaining stimulating surroundings and creative opportunities.
The PYP is fully implemented with 6 UOIs. Daily language learning focusses on speaking and
listening, oral expression, reading skills, spelling, word and sentence writing and handwriting.
Kindergarten children enjoy their own exclusive lending library. Math is taught with a
visual and conceptual approach using manipulative resources. Mathematical vocabulary is
emphasized and topics covered include problem solving, classification, measures, pattern and
shape, all taught alongside computation with a focus on addition and subtraction. The school
operates an Early Intervention Programme from K – Grade 2.
GRADES 1-2
Differentiation and enrichment strategies are key factors in ensuring each
child is making progress.
The curriculum continues to build on where each individual child is in their personal development,
in each subject area. Daily language lessons reinforce reading skills through the teaching of
phonics, whole word recognition, sentence awareness and verbal presentation skills.
Math instruction has a focus on proficiency in computation, in all number operations, whilst
continuing with an investigational approach. The scientific inquiry process and the subject
areas of History and Geography are introduced in more detail through the UOI. The swimming
programme starts in Grade 2.
Language and literacy become more holistic
according to each student’s development.
The focus moves to the teaching of higher order thinking skills.
Math lessons reinforce knowledge of number and the other topic
areas whilst they become more demanding in the understanding
and conceptual implementation of principles.
The demands of the Unit of Inquiry (UOI) become greater as
knowledge of the scientific process is needed to participate
in experiments and investigations. Similarly, the social studies
elements of the curriculum depend on the pre- acquisition of
knowledge and skills in order to carry out effective research
on factual topics and to collaborate within a team to reach a
specific goal.
Standardized tests are administered to assess student progress
and achievement. Students participate in annual overnight field
trips in Belgium and Europe which further enhance their studies
and social development.
THE PYP EXHIBITION
The Exhibition is the culmination of the PYP. It is an individual
student led inquiry project in Grade 5. Students are given the
opportunity to use all their previous learning to research into an
issue they are passionate about and to present it to the school
community, using a range of media. This is a remarkable and
memorable experience for our students which results in substantial
personal growth, evidence of the Learner Profile attributes and
action service in the community.
The Primary School is an active, happy
community and this is so important as the
relationship between school and parents can
have such a positive impact on a child’s learning.
There are many ways you as a parent can become involved at
St. John’s. Volunteers are welcomed with open arms. Building
relationships with the wider community also brings additional
possibilities to enhance teaching and learning.
Other activities for parents and families include:
• Regular school assemblies that build community and provide
opportunities for students to perform in public, to celebrate and
to share their learning experiences. Parents are a most welcome
audience.
• The Primary student council coordinates events and projects and
this provides an avenue for students to develop and demonstrate
organizational and leadership skills.
• The Peacemaker Programme trains students in Grades 3-5 to
facilitate conflict resolution between peers during recess times,
encouraging all our students to live our school values.
• Students participate in various curriculum field trips and extracurricular
activities offered at St. John’s.
Finally, our team of dedicated, excellent practitioners are always
available to meet with you to discuss any questions or concerns
you may have.
Curriculum Handbooks are available for each grade on request.
We provide challenge and support, appropriate structure and appropriate freedom to make this time of change as positive as
possible.
"Our child is very happy and already shows more confidence
and interest in learning than in our previous school."
A St. John's Parent
The Middle School experience has two over-arching goals, designed to respond to the needs of young people at
the threshold of adolescence:
GUIDING PRINCIPLES
1
2
We develop in our students the foundational knowledge, skills,
habits and character strengths that allow them to flourish in High
School, university and beyond. We recognize that the personal
and academic habits set in Middle School can effect people
throughout their lives.
We provide multiple and diverse opportunities for Middle School
students to explore new interests and develop new passions.
With specialized teachers in all disciplines, we bring expertise
and enthusiasm to children’s learning experiences that invite them
to imagine themselves as future scientists, artists, writers, social
analysts, athletes, mathematicians or anything else the dream of.
MIDDLE SCHOOL
EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES
St. John’s Middle School offers a comprehensive range of extra-curricular activities throughout the school year, some of which
carry a fee. Some programmes include competition with and travel to other international schools.
The options are varied and have in the past included some of the following activities:
THE CURRICULUM
As a candidate MYP school, the Middle School
curriculum aligns with the International Baccalaureate.
Middle School students engage in age-appropriate
scientific and mathematical investigations, historical
research, literary analyses, language study and
artistic performances that prepare them for success in
High School.
In addition, students follow Advisory, Religious
Studies and Physical Education curricula that develop
their social-emotional competencies, inter-cultural
understanding and habits that lead to excellent
fitness, nutrition and general health.
ATHLETICS AND THE PERFORMING ARTS
Middle School students have multiple options to engage in competitive after-school
sports in all three seasons, competing against international school teams throughout
western Europe. Student-artists can develop their acting, singing and instrumental
talents through year-round choral and ensemble opportunities and through international
arts workshops and exchanges.
EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
Students learn by doing. At each grade level, there are multiple opportunities for
day-long field experiences to connect classroom learning with real-world experiences
in Belgium. In addition, each grade engages in a week-long learning experience
focused on key trans-disciplinary goals for the grade level.
To challenge all students at their levels of current
ability, the curriculum appropriately differentiates
for students in the areas of math and language
acquisition (English and French, as well as Dutch,
German, and Spanish at the Grade 8 level).
The intended learning outcomes for our
Middle School courses are based on an
analysis of the knowledge, skills and
understandings required by the IB DP
final external assessments.
They are given the skills, knowledge, understandings and
dispositions which will enable them to demonstrate personal
excellence.
The difference with our programme is that we are fully inclusive and
any of our students can begin the full IB Diploma course of study.
This is a unique and different approach in comparison to some other
international schools where students would be expected to show a
certain grade point average or set of results.
We want our students to acquire the
knowledge and skills to allow them to
live happily, work successfully and truly
live our values to, ‘Impact the World’
Our commitment to international mindedness,
leadership, information technology and academic
challenge ensures that students are well-equipped
to succeed in an increasingly competitive and
demanding world.
The 21st Century makes ever greater demands for
the qualities and values promoted by St John’s High
School.
The curriculum offers both breadth and depth in eight key
learning areas: Mathematics, Biology/Chemistry/Physics,
English Language & Literature, Additional Languages including
French as the host country language, Public Speaking and
Debate, Social Sciences, Visual and Performing Arts, Religion
and Physical Education. The IB Learner Profile and our core
values of ‘Companionship, Integrity and Respect' are central to
the approach and students are assisted to become, inquirers,
knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, openminded,
caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective. These are
the dispositions which we would expect our students to form as
they grow and develop.
Similarly, in keeping with the IB ethos, the curriculum
accentuates personal enquiry, independent study, international
mindedness, and service learning. In addition, all students
The curriculum is
developed and
articulated by St.
John's High School
teachers to meet the
aspirations of an
increasingly diverse
intake of students
who have a variety of
linguistic and cultural
backgrounds and as
preparation for
the IB DP.
have an advisory programme, which encourages them to
reflect on their own personal, social, emotional and intellectual
development.
At the heart of our High School curriculum as a whole lie the
IB’s approaches to learning; we are helping students to be
confident and fluent in their thinking, communication, social,
self-management and research skills. These are the transdisciplinary
and transferable skills which students acquire as a
result of attending St John's.
To support these goals, all students follow a learning path
which seeks to expose them to as broad an experience as
possible. In this way we ensure a breadth of experience and
a logical progression to the full IB Diploma. We believe that it
is important that students in their formative years discover their
strengths and interests.
HIGH SCHOOL
THE ADVANCED PLACEMENT
(AP) PROGRAMME
The programme is designed to enable students to
think deeply and take personal responsibility for their
learning.
The Advanced Placement (AP) programme allows students to pursue
university-level studies while in high school. Students can earn a firstyear
university credit for each AP credit achieved. In grades 10 and
11, students in the AP programme will fulfill the requirements of high
school study, while experiencing additional enrichment to prepare
them for AP tests usually taken at the end of Grade 11.
Subject areas include English, Mathematics, Economics Science,
Social Science and French.
WHAT DOES THE PROGRAMME LOOK LIKE?
The Diploma Programme prepares students for effective participation in a rapidly
evolving and increasingly global society as they:
THE IB DIPLOMA - GRADES 11 AND 12
THE IBO MISSION
The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring,
knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create
a better and more peaceful world.
• develop physically, intellectually,
emotionally and ethically
• acquire breadth and depth of
knowledge and understanding, studying
courses from 6 subject groups
• develop the skills and a positive attitude
toward learning that will prepare them
for higher education
• study at least two languages and
increase understanding of cultures,
including their own
• make connections across traditional
academic disciplines and explore
the nature of knowledge through
the programme’s unique theory of
knowledge course
• undertake in-depth research into an
area of interest through the lens of one
or more academic disciplines in the
extended essay
• enhance their personal and interpersonal
development through creativity, action
and service
To this end the organization works with schools, governments and international
organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and
rigorous assessment.
These programmes encourage students across the world to become active,
compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their
differences, can also be right.
THE DIPLOMA PROGRAMME CORE
The Extended Essay equires students to
engage in independent research through
an in-depth study of a question relating to
one of the DP subjects they are studying.
The world studies extended essay option
allows students to focus on a topic of
global significance which they examine
through the lens of at least two DP subjects.
Theory of Knowledge develops a coherent
approach to learning that unifies the
academic disciplines.
Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) involves
students in a range of activities alongside
their academic studies throughout the
Diploma Programme. Creativity encourages
students to engage in the arts and creative
thinking. Action seeks to develop a healthy
lifestyle through physical activity. Service
with the community offers a vehicle for new
learning with academic value.
The three strands of CAS enhance students’
personal and interpersonal development
through experiential learning and enable
journeys of self-discovery.
for students.
HIGH SCHOOL
2017 IB DP RESULTS
Of the St. John’s Grade 12 students registered for the full IB Diploma Programme,
95,1% successfully completed the exams, while obtaining an average score of
34.8. (The average international pass rate is 79,3% and the global average
score is 30.)
Our top scorer obtained 44 points, which counts in the top 1% of all candidates
worldwide. An impressive 78% of students obtained a score of 30 points or
more, 49% scored 36 points or more (compared with a world IB average of
around 22%) and a stunning 22% scored 40 points or higher (compared to a
world average of 9%).
Of the candidates, 32% pursued a bilingual diploma with a 100% success rate.
Despite not being academically selective, St. John’s is known for its consistently
high IB scores and this year is no exception. We would like to congratulate all
our Grade 12 students.
The class of 2017 will now be moving on to excellent institutions of Higher
Education (click here for more information). We thank all our students for their
hard work, the grade 12 parents for their support, and our teachers for their
dedication, guidance and individual care for each of these students.
Students take written examinations
at the end of the programme, which
are marked by external IB examiners.
Students also complete assessment
tasks in the school, which are either
initially marked by teachers and then
moderated by external moderators or
sent directly to external examiners.
The marks awarded for each course range from
1 (lowest) to 7 (highest). Students can also be
awarded up to three additional points for their
combined results on theory of knowledge and the
extended essay.
The diploma is awarded to students who gain at
least 24 points, subject to certain minimum levels
of performance across the whole programme
and to satisfactory participation in the creativity,
action, service requirement. The highest total that
a Diploma Programme student can be awarded
is 45 points.
Assessment is criterion-related, which means
student performance is measured against prespecified
assessment criteria based on the aims
and objectives of each subject curriculum, rather
than the performance of other students taking
the same examinations. The range of scores that
students have attained remains statistically stable,
and universities value the rigour and consistency
of Diploma Programme assessment practice.
HELPING STUDENTS SUCCEED IN HIGH SCHOOL
We believe that successful students need to know their own strengths, are physically active, are optimistic and hopeful, can make
realistic goals for themselves, have identifiable role models and can appreciate that everyone has a spiritual dimension to their lives
whatever their personal belief.
Our children like the modern way of studying and feel the
SUPPORT SERVICES
Throughout the school, and on all levels, students are challenged, supported and encouraged in
accordance with our core value of companionship.
The various Support Services at St. John’s work closely
with all teachers to enable the individual student to thrive
physically, academically, creatively and personally.
This we do in the belief that every student should be
enabled to achieve personal excellence.
The Learning Support programme is
open to all students who have learning
differences or difficulties, or who are
struggling to achieve their full potential in
their school work. Programmes typically
focus on providing support in the core
academic areas and organizational skills
as we work together towards the goal of
successful, rewarding academic learning.
Lessons are provided either in small groups
or as in-class support, as appropriate.
The acquisition of English as an Additional
Language is recognized as requiring
special provision for some students whose
first or current academic language is not
English. Teaching staff determine the need
for additional help in English language
acquisition , and language support is
provided, as appropriate. The level of
teaching is adjusted to each student’s
needs, with a balanced emphasis on the
language comprehension and production
demanded by their classes.
The Learning Support in the 3 sections
of the school monitor, guide and support
students in matters of academic placement
and programmes in school. They also
offer advice on approaches to learning
and monitor and support student wellbeing.
In the High School, the Guidance
Counsellors help with choices and
applications for tertiary education. All the
Guidance Counsellors are available for
individual and confidential consultations
with any student seeking or requiring
personal or guidance counselling.
The School Psychologist works schoolwide
and offers consultations for specific
concerns regarding emotional or
psychological well-being.
The services of Speech & Language and
Occupational Therapists are available
upon request from teachers and parents.
Therapy sessions can be arranged during
or after the school day. The speech and
occupational therapists work on a freelance
basis, therefore their services incur
an additional charge, not included in the
school fees.
ARTS
We believe that Art and Design, Dance, Drama and Music are essential components of human life.
St. John’s has an amazing fine arts programme.
At St. John’s, the Visual and
A St. John's Parent
Performing Arts are a passion,
where we see young people
develop skills that will
remain with them
for life.
In an international school like
St. John’s, with a diverse student
body from different cultural
backgrounds, the Visual and
Performing Arts become the
language of all students.
The arts play an integral part in
the growth and development of
the individual, in communicating
across cultural borders, and in
creating a sense of involvement
and belonging.
The purpose of the Visual and Performing
Arts programmes at St. John’s is to enable
students to realize their creative and
imaginative potential while developing
critical awareness, an understanding of
the fundamental elements in each subject
area, and a wide range of technical
skills in relation to different media and
approaches.
We have created an environment that
encourages our students to be creative
and passionate about what they do.
We believe that students who develop
sensitivity and appreciation for the Visual
and Performing Arts grow into wellrounded
individuals.
A full schedule of exhibitions by visiting
artists and students in the school gallery,
student theatrical productions, artistic
performances, and musical concerts,
along with many organized cultural
trips, supplement and enrich the many
programmes. The membership and
participation in the International Schools
Theatre Association (ISTA) and the
Association for Music in International
Schools (AMIS) provide a unique outlet
through which students are able to further
their creative talents.
All students have the opportunity to be
involved in the many extra-curricular
activities that are offered.
ARTS
MIDDLE SCHOOL
All students in the Middle School study Music, Art and Drama within
the curriculum on a rotational basis. Our Visual and Performing Arts
curriculum is designed to encourage students to express themselves
creatively while learning and applying various techniques.
The Visual and Performing Arts teachers believe that young
adolescents need many opportunities to be creative and expressive,
to follow their creative instincts. At the same time, students should
develop their intellectual ability to analyse, interpret and reflect.
The Visual and Performing Arts projects always involve practical
work, research and a personal reflection to assess their own
performance.
PRIMARY SCHOOL
The Primary School Visual and Performing Arts programme is a very
important part of the curriculum. Students become aware at a very early
age of the visual and tactile properties in all kinds of artifacts and other art
forms in their environment.
Our students come from all over the world and bring with them their
own personal experiences. These experiences are enhanced by visiting
professional artists and by trips to museums and through art appreciation.
Our students develop and learn by creating art which is based on their
imagination and the experiences already learned, through diversity of
ideas. They learn about lines, shapes, colors, texture, pattern in works of
art and in their environment. They develop their imagination and drawing
skills through the use of different tools and materials. They gain confidence
in a variety of ways both imaginatively and creatively.
The music and dance programmes in The Primary School are extensive
and encompass a wide range of creative experiences. Students enjoy
dance and music classes within the curriculum. Instrumental music lessons
are offered after school. There is also a wide range of after school
activities throughout the school year. We believe that the Arts are an
excellent means of self-expression for our students.
HIGH SCHOOL
In High School, we recognize that creative exploration can only further
the student’s confidence, initiative, imagination, discipline, team-work,
knowledge and ultimately personal satisfaction, which prepares students
to be able to take IB Visual Arts, Music and Theatre Arts at both standard
and higher level.
The Visual Arts programme is structured so that new students can gain
a solid introduction to Art and Design through a range of group work,
leading to smaller individual projects. The structured yet flexible initial
approach is progressively developed to encourage our young artists and
designers to take on a more mature and independent approach to work by
developing individual themes and ideas.
The Performing Arts play an important role in the lives of our students. The
“state-of-the-art” Performing Arts Centre , with its 400 seat theatre, reflects
the quality and variety of opportunities available to the students. We
seek to instil a genuine appreciation for varied aesthetic endeavors. This
appreciation, in turn, manifests itself in the student’s self-discovery of his or
her own creative talents.
A St. John's Student
Being a member of a sports team at St. John’s signifies a
multitude of things. It means you have earned the right to join
a legacy of proven winners. It implies you have shown the
right attitude, the dedication, and the promise of representing
St. John’s with integrity. There’s also the assurance that you’ll
be developing successful tools that can be applied to other
significant parts of life, for the rest of your life.
We enjoy taking interests, and developing them into
passion. We succeed in doing so through our wide-ranging
programme, an excellent array of facilities, and our highly
qualified coaching staff, which includes former professional
players in their respective sports.
Our team members are fortunate enough to travel and
compete around the world. Aside from absorbing several
cultures, being able to participate in such a fun and
rewarding programme also promotes the students’ physical,
emotional, and social wellbeing.
SPORTS
OUR PROGRAMME
We offer nine competitive
sports across Middle and
High School
Aside from these core sports, we offer
an extensive intramural extracurricular
activity programme to our students as
well.
Activities vary, but tend to include
martial arts, floor hockey, dance and
post-season soccer and volleyball.
the Under 10 age group
SPORTS & COMMUNITY
Creating bonds and taking away memories.
That’s what being a St. John’s athlete is all about.
We encourage all parents to be active members of our community. From
providing continuous support for our athletes at home and away games, to
working with our Athletic Booster Programme, parents play a great part in
our success as a programme.
Our Booster Programme does a tremendous job of raising funds to
supplement our department with those “extras” that set us apart from other
international schools, and truly lets our student-athletes know that they are
part of a special experience.
The School for Pro Tennis, run by St. John's and the Justine Henin Tennis
Academy, combines academics with high level tennis. Tennis talents age
THE ISSTs
St. John’s is a full member of the International School Sports
Tournament (ISST) organization. There are currently 16
full-member schools and 7 non-full-member schools in the
league, across Europe, Egypt and Israel.
For students seeking to further pursue their athletic ambitions,
they are able to integrate in the local sports community,
which enjoys close ties to St. John’s as well.
Despite being one of the smaller schools in the ISST
organization, St. John’s has maintained a winning tradition
over the years. Hanging from the rafters of our Sports Arena
and Sports Hall are over 45 championship banners, with
27 ISST championships and 26 more finals appearances
coming in the last decade alone. We are indeed a winning
school!
We’ve also had countless alumni share the stories of how
their dedication, experiences, and athletic accomplishments
at an early age, helped pave the way for future successes
following St. John’s.
PARENT GROUPS
VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS SUPPORT PROGRAMME
The Arts Support Programme is a group of volunteers, from the
staff and parent body, who support the visual and performing
arts programme at school by helping to organize and manage
major events. This support ranges from providing refreshments
at regularly held art shows through to helping run major drama
performances.
There are also special fund raising events, the proceeds
of which go towards supporting very specific visual and
performing arts needs at the school. These events are
scheduled throughout the year.
All parents of children involved in dance, drama, choir and
other classes related to the Arts are automatically members
of the programme. All are welcome to attend the meetings
which are held once a month. At these meetings, we generally
discuss matters related to the visual and performing arts at
school and the action plans for supported events.
The group is great fun, but most of all we help
build the community spirit for which St. John’s is
so well known.
PARENT TEACHER PROGRAMME
The Parent Teacher Programme (PTP) plays a vital role in the life
of the St. John’s school community by being a forum for direct
dialogue between the parents, teachers and administrators at the
school.
Regular PTP meetings provide the opportunity for its members
to voice their opinions, make suggestions and pose questions,
thereby becoming actively involved in the life of the school.
Providing useful information to newcomers
The PTP’s Welcome Committee helps new families by:
• offering vital, practical information to ease the process of
integration into life in Belgium
• holding coffee mornings and other social events to encourage
more contact between St. John’s families, old and new
• organizing field trips to help new families discover Belgium in
both a physical and a cultural sense
Supporting families in need of emotional or practical assistance
The PTP’s Family Support Group helps families who encounter
difficulties or need special support, for example, in the event of
illness or the hospitalization of a family member.
Organizing informal, fun events throughout the school year
The PTP offers its members the opportunity to get acquainted
with other families and cultures by organizing events like the
International Festival, Family Day and a Garage Sale, all of which
contribute to the family atmosphere at St. John’s.
Raising funds to support improvement projects at the school and to
help selected external charities.
The funds raised by the PTP are used for projects that enhance
the general school and positively impact the student learning
experience at St. John’s.
"The welcome we have received has been unbelievable,
we have never experienced it elsewhere!"
ATHLETIC BOOSTER PROGRAMME
The Athletic Booster Programme exists primarily to provide financial support for the sports programme at St. John’s.
Funds are raised from a variety of sources, such as the sale of food and drink from the concession stand located in the sports
foyer; the sale of 'Spirit Wear' and annual fund raising events. Booster is a dynamic group of parents of differing nationalities,
and with an array of talents and personalities.
THE COMMUNITY OF WATERLOO
Waterloo owes its fame to the Duke of Wellington and the 1815
“Battle of Waterloo,” which is commemorated today by one of the
best known monuments in Belgium—the “Butte du Lion.” The Battle of
Waterloo was fought between the French army, under the command
of Napoleon Bonaparte, and the Allied armies, commanded by the
Duke of Wellington from Britain and General Blücher from Prussia.
Today, Waterloo plays a very important
economic role in Belgium, primarily due to
the many international companies that have
their headquarters here.
A small town of about 20,000 inhabitants
in the French-speaking Belgian province
of Brabant-Wallon, Waterloo is just 20
minutes from the center of Brussels. With
over 20 percent of the population being
expatriates, this is a very friendly and
easy place to live, especially if it is your
first time abroad. The local Commune
is very experienced in dealing with
expatriates and genuinely welcomes them
into the community. Waterloo provides
expat families with all the conveniences
of a large town while maintaining a small
town feel. Everything you need in terms
of services, stores, medical facilities and
cultural opportunities is available in town.
Waterloo. A vast array of rental property
is available in the town itself and the
surrounding areas of Ohain and Lasne.
St. John’s International School is located
in a quiet, tree-lined, residential area of
Waterloo with both housing and shopping
in easy reach of the school. The fact that
many families live only minutes away
from the school encourages a strong local
community and school life, and there are
ample opportunities to integrate into local
Belgian life. Students can walk and bike
to school safely. Waterloo is surrounded by
the 10,920-acre Sonian Forest which offers
extensive walking, biking and horse riding
paths.
The highway passes Waterloo and makes
for easy access to destinations in all
directions. The town also offers excellent
public transportation options, including a
free bus service within Waterloo.
