In 2016, a six-month trip to
and from Alaska led through BC
in both directions. Starting in
spring and returning in fall, they
followed the birds both ways! The
BC expedition began with a ferry
from Seattle to Nanaimo, Vancouver
Island. During a fantastic
week of diving, they explored and
photographed the cold, colorful,
pristine waters of BC’s inside
passage. It was then off to the
Native American village of Bella
Bella where the head of a long
fjord is surrounded by beautiful
mountains and pods of dolphins
playing in the water. During the
1930s, Bella Bella was one of the
first places scholars started chronicling
the stories of BC’s North
Pacific Coast Native Americans.
Hear about some of the stories
from their Native American
story teller guide and their hike
to some out of the way sacred
petroglyphs. Voyaging further
north, they also learned that in
Prince Rupert, the best place to
see eagles is the town dump! On
the return leg, the colors from the
aurora borealis to fall foliage were
striking. In Hot Springs they had
the unique opportunity to see and
photograph a wood bison family.
The Arctic in summer is an
incredible place. Whether you
are on land or at sea, it is a minimalist’s
dream with relatively few
animals, diminutive plant life, flat
landscapes interrupted by vertical
cliffs, it is a formidably unforgiving
landscape. But the animals
are amazing, the plant life is vibrant
(even if the trees are only a
couple of centimeters high), and
those cliffs can hold millions of
nesting seabirds. David traveled
around Svalbard aboard a small
ship in the summer of 2016 and
recorded 16 polar bears, mostly
while sailing near the pack ice,
millions of dovekies, hundreds of

thousands of thick-billed murres,
arctic terns, all three jaegers,
great skuas, glaucous and ivory
gulls, and much more at sea. On
land, there were views of reindeer,
arctic fox, and a few passerines.
Natural Selection of Birds—
Darwin’s Finches Program for
3rd graders
In this program designed for
children in Grade 3, one of Broadmoor’s
teacher naturalists will
come to your school and transform
your class of students into finches
living on the Galápagos Islands!
Through the use of hand-puppets,
each student “bird” will try
to feed on the islands using their
specific behavioral and physical
adaptations. Depending on success,
the birds will decide if they
stay or migrate to find the best
environment to meet their needs.
Through the simulation, students
experience the variety of
challenges, competition, and
success that drive evolution and
survival in nature. Students use
worksheets to collect data and discuss
the variables that influenced
the likelihood of their bird’s survival.
