Jap would sing the weirdest songs &quot;night poems,&quot;<br />

passengers. Dressed in his native garb, he would do a<br />

sort of grand opera performance in Japanese all by him<br />

self,<br />

flourishing a wooden sword which he would pull<br />

out and thrust into his belt, clasping the handle while<br />

he recited poems which he afterward interpreted in his<br />

queer English.<br />

Those first days of the voyage were calm enough,<br />

and I should greatly have enjoyed the being abroad<br />

on the early autumn seas, where the air was brisk and<br />

not cold, and where no hint of the fogs and mists that<br />

often prevail in those latitudes obscured the vision<br />

which could reach afar.<br />

But the thoughts of<br />

treasure and of how to recover it were almost constantly<br />

It harried me sadly to think that nothing<br />

was being done toward the positive detection of the<br />

knew his real name, charging him with having stolen<br />

my gold, and demanding the restoration of it. But<br />

whenever I hinted at any action of this sort to the Doc<br />

tor he was ready with his cool caution of awaiting the<br />

turn of events.<br />
