that would bring my lost gold nearer to me.<br />

Gus Clarke went on to say that the cabin where the<br />

leaving nothing in the cabin but an old rusty camp<br />

stove and a pair of worn-out overalls. The buoy, with<br />

in a corner.<br />

Whether the ancient ferryman had any<br />

thing to do with its presence there was not apparent.<br />

I went with Gus Clarke to the ferryman s cabin, and we<br />

poked about under the loose flooring and tore out some<br />

of the lining in the effort to find something that might<br />

work upon. At the ferry they told us that the old man<br />

had been gone a week and that nobody had been living<br />

in the cabin in the meantime.<br />

it would have been an easy<br />

matter for a person to come and go in the night without<br />
